If I remember they dropped big Cyril for our game too just to make sure. Denis wiped Cyril out near the end, by the dug outs and the crowd, who were quiet at this point, erupted! A fitting end to his career! I know they dropped one of there dangerous strikers that night but it was a long time ago. I remember Denis and that tackle but thought it was in the box in front of the boothen 🤔

The one I specifically remember is that one as I was stood in the Boothen Paddock and nearly got taken out, by Denis, in the same tackle! We all fucking hate Leeds!

So refreshing to read a thread with genuine Stoke fans contributing to it...
Makes a change from the usual whingeing toe rags that have appeared in the last few seasons.
As far as relegation comparisons are concerned that Leicester game in 1990, as Smudge says, springs to mind.

And if there was a single biggest factor in our 3-0 win against the baggies then that was it. Spoke to a few West Brom fans that night and every one of them said they hoped we’d win. It was fairly obvious their players felt the same way. They’d been in danger of relegation themselves until their win against Leeds made them safe. It takes a special kind of special to riot in the town of the team who they needed to do them a massive favour just a few days later. Daft twats. There was only going to be one loser the night we needed to beat West Brom to send Leeds down and prevent our own relegation, and that loser was Leeds. One of of my favourite, most memorable matches. If I remember they dropped big Cyril for our game too just to make sure. After that game I got Cyrille's autograph for my dad! 😀 Cyrille was in with a chance of a a world cup squad place. If he didn't play perhaps they wete helping him get some rest.

81/82 was hairy. We had to beat WBA in Smithy's last game. Leeds manager Allan Clarke left at half time. Leeds won a home game late in the season and thought they were safe and celebrated accordingly. And that isn't at all funny. 😂 That was lovely

The 1984 escape came down to a three way battle between us, perennial escape artists Coventry and Birmingham. We were in the bottom three when the matches kicked off.
If I remember rightly, goal difference and even goals scored also played a part in that we could overtake Coventry if we both won but had to win by three more goals than they did. Birmingham's GD was better than both ours and Cov so didn't really matter - provided they won their match they were safe.
As it turned out Coventry won their game 2-1 (Norwich?), Blues drew with Southampton and we beat already down Wolves 4-0. The crowd knew Cov were winning 2-1 and kept urging the team on even at 3-0 as this was not enough to keep us up in the event of Blues scoring at The Dell. This was the game where Paul Maguire scored all four, two of them penalties conceded by one Alan Dodd ex of this parish! Rumours persist that he winked to the Boothen after the one that made it 4-0. Blues failure to win at Southampton sent them down.
It was also Jack Taylor's last ever match as a FIFA listed referee and he'd been promised the ball even if a player scored a hat-trick, but not if one scored four!

Stood on the Boothen and glassback slots home the first penalty..... cur my mate pulling an ORANGE bog roll out of his pocket and hurling towards the front!!!! Some Real dagger looks from a few die hard boothen enders Bless him - it was his first time and Just grabbel a bog roll out of his loo before we headed off!

I'm sure the Boothen End goal nets still regularly got covered in bog roll in our final season at the Victoria Ground and then it never happened once we moved to the Britannia Stadium. Then again that first season we were so poor that we were probably too busy hurling abuse at the players, manager and Coates that we didn't have time to hurl bog rolls.

In 97/98 we were still the bookies favourites to stay up going into the last game. Ladbrokes were offering 5/1 on us being relegated on the morning of the match. I couldn't bring myself to place that bet even though it seemed very generous.

Could be wrong. Just had a look at the final table from that season. We went down and Stockport County finished 8th. Imagine if you had said to a County fan back then, 20 years time lads we'll have been in the premier league for a decade and you lot will be part-timers in the sixth tier. It's not all doom and gloom

We had won three of the previous four home games and Man City were pretty shite away from home, so the bookies obviously felt that a draw was on the cards in our game with a defeat for either Pompey or Vale who were both also tripe.

I had a season ticket for the holocaust season and went to 35 or so of the games, of which we managed to win just 3 (Arse, Sheff Wed, Man U). Resigned inevitability set in before the Crimbo deccies were taken down.
I had a massive hangover from a wedding reception the night before and threw up repeatedly into the bucket at my feet during the 2-5 game v Man City as we went down in 98.
I am planning on coming back for the last two, what are likely to be, crucial games of this season. I do not intend to attend either game with a bucket, although I am very likely to be feeling physically sick throughout all 180 minutes of them.

My abiding memory of 02/03 is of the never ending revolving door of players on loan. Tommy Mooney, Allan Smart, Lee Mills, Mark Williams, Steve Banks, Mark Crossley, Ade Akinbiyi, Richard Johnson, Paul Warhurst - probably others, too.
After the loan players left and the remainder of the squad was culled, the team was virtually rebuilt from the bottom up in the following season. I seem to remember a ton of players, including Keith Andrews and Darel Russell, turning up the day before the first game of the season.

After the loan players left and the remainder of the squad was culled, the team was virtually rebuilt from the bottom up in the following season. I seem to remember a ton of players, including Keith Andrews and Darel Russell, turning up the day before the first game of the season. Another often forgotten part of that season was the small but significant role that Lee Mills played. Yes he was past it and shit but in my opinion he scored one of the most important goals of the season in a drab 1-0 home midweek win against Walsall. It was the Wednesday night straight after that 6-0 thrashing against Forest and we looked dead and buried. Pulis had made wholesale changes and set us up not to concede, establishing the blueprint that would eventually lead to our survival. The only way we were going to recover from that Forest humiliation was to immediately put it behind us and get a win and Mills took his chance and did exactly that. In points terms it undid the damage of Forest and kept us in touch before we made the crucial loan signings of Crossley and Akinbiyi who kept us up. I honestly think we'd have gone down had we not picked up that immediate win so that was a very significant goal. Around that same time I think he also got a goal in an important 2-2 draw away at Norwich when we'd been behind.

Bog rolls and bus ticket rolls were great, really miss those days now. I think it was the 78 World Cup in Argentina where we all saw ticker tape confetti swirling around those huge stadiums. The following season the Boothen erupted with bog rolls, bus ticket rolls and about a thousand copies of the Sentinel which lads had shredded prior to kick off 😁
Made for a great spectacle, although the apprentices who swept the ground on a Monday weren’t too pleased 😂

2003 was the last proper one and despite some histrionics on this message board we were 90% safe after the win at Coventry. 85 wasn't anything that vaguely resembled a relegation struggle. 97/98 was a catalogue of self imposed catastrophe. Even bearing in mind the impecunious state of the club there was error after error leading to our downfall. I've felt for a while that this season has a lot of parallels with that disastrous 97/98 season. There have been so many self inflicted mistakes and bad decision making that have led us to this position. That season we sold our best player in the summer (Sheron) and replaced him with cheaper players. Last summer we sold Arnautovic and replaced him with Choupo. We had a squad that contained a number of good players and should have been easily good enough to stay up but were led to relegation due to a combination of poor management, behind the scenes turmoil and lack of commitment from the players (97/98 we had the likes of Sigurdsson, Kavanagh, Thorne, Keen, Wallace, Griffin for a time who were all good/very good First Division players and should have been enough to keep us up). This season you could say similar with Shaqiri, Allen, Shawcross, Bauer and Butland. We've had plenty of poor management and bad decision making this season too and although the off field turmoil is nothing compared to 97/98 the shambolic managerial appointment process and the recent revelations about how we went about trying to sign a striker in January paint a pretty shambolic picture of what's going on behind the scenes. Both seasons were characterised by a number of exceptionally poor and/or underperforming players who were so bad that they dragged the rest of the team down. 97/98 had Tweed, Stewart, Nyamah, Pickering, Muggleton and a load of dire loan players like Tosh McKinley, O'Neill Donaldson and Neville Southall. This season we have Wimmer, Tymon, Johnson, Berahino, Fletcher and pretty much all our striking options. Both seasons have had a 7 goal thrashing and numerous gutless capitulations. I'm just hoping Lambert doesn't tick the next box of failed fist pumping mid season managerial replacement like Kamara. Not to mention the building of the ground in 97 & the building of the new corner in 17 adding to the parallels!
