Why don't goalkeepers just stay in the middle of the goal and react when the ball is hit on penalties?? If the pen goes down the middle which it seems about 80% do ..you save it. Pedro on sat was down the middle. West Brom just was down the middle. If you react when ball is hit anything within a metre of you ...you're saving. Completely baffles me. It baffles me even more than no-one mentions it?! Am I completely missing something here?

Reaction times have been studied extensively....men have faster reaction times than women and athletes have faster times than non-athletes. The brain requires 2/10 of a second to just to understand simple visual stimuli and another 2/10 of a second to command muscles to react.
They have tested footie players......the point of no return for a penalty kick (when the kicker can no longer change his mind about where to send the ball) is around 1/4 of a second. If the goalkeeper waits until the kicker's foot is less than 1/4 second from the ball and then dives in one direction, the kicker doesn't have enough time to adjust his kick.

Think he went the right way for each one and got no where near.

Jack always dives too soon he's not very good at saving penalties. BTW it was Willian who took the peanlty. Gouranga.

If you dive before the ball is kicked, as butland does, you are encouraging the striker to knock the ball down the middle
Makes no sense

jack, as we all know is a great keeper, and i'm sure he will play for England sometime soon,BUT he is the worst keeper i've ever come across at facing penalties, you would think that gordon banks would give him a few tips,or if he does, he's not fcukg listening, its like he thinks well they're going to score anyway, so i'll make a cunt of me self and dive a couple of seconds before they take it,fcukg infuriates me, if newcastle get a penalty tomorrow, and i was manager,i'd fcukg sub him before they take it, useless twat, rant over. PS hope you read this jack, we need you at your very best from now to the end of the season

Many penalty takers will slightly hesitate on the run up to see which way the keeper is diving. A goalkeeper can tell which way an inexperienced player is going to hit the ball by watching his shoulder as it will drop on the side which he is about to hit it. This is why Berahino's peno earlier in the season was easily saved.

Why don't goalkeepers just stay in the middle of the goal and react when the ball is hit on penalties?? Am I completely missing something here? Possibly. If a goalie just stood there at the moment a penalty taker kicks the ball, it will take him close to a 1/2 second before he even begins to move. At that point, depending on the speed of the ball, it is unlikely that the goalie could stop a ball travelling towards either goalpost. The goalie's best chance is to either guess (50/50 chance), waiting until the kicker is committed to left/right and jumping in the direction that he has chosen. If he can read the kicker's body language, he will improve his chances beyond 50%. For comparison, let's say you are in combat and you are seeing tracer rounds coming towards your position from 800 yards away (and travelling somewhere around 2500 feet per second)......that is a minimum distance to dodge the bullet.......you'll need 1/4 second to register that the tracer is coming towards you (lit up and visible all the way) and has travelled 200 yards......another 1/4 second to instruct your muscles to react (bullet has now travelled 400 yards).....and another 1/2 second to actually move out of the way, rewarding you with a sound like a snap, which is that small metal object passing over your head as it breaks the sound barrier. There is a bit of physics involved in goalkeeping.

A goalie must be disciplined and patient, waiting until 1/4 second before boot meets ball......before guessing left or right, or correctly reading the kickers "tell".

Shilton tried to do that in shoot out in 1990 semi final. Think he went the right way for each one and got no where near. I've seen more agile Subbuteo goalkeepers than Shilton was in Italy 90 Beautifully illustrated by his attempt to stop the deflected free kick for Germanys goal. Legend has it that Bobby Robson thought about bringing on Dave Beasant for the penalties. Shame he didn't really although Germanys pens were excellent.

I find it strange that keepers are more inclined to use their feet more so than their hands, and to just stick out a leg makes them no different than what an out field player would do.very rare do you see a keeper diving full length and tipping it around his far post.....piss poor goal keeping.

Going the right way is all well and good but that's just guess work. Even if you go the right way you've still got save the bastard thing.
You're totally reliant on the player making a hash of it either way. Nice height, not in the corner, not hard enough etc

The myth has always surrounded Beasant which is weird because Woods was on the bench. Bobby Robson mentioned Beasant himself. Shame as Shilton was as good as Jack at saving pens.

According to dad ...goalkeepers have to decide which way they are going to dive to stand a chance of getting to anything in the corners of the goal .....this combined with a bit of homeswork on who will probably Take the penalty and where they like to place it should enable the keeper to hopefully go the right way and cover as much of the goal area as they can. Once committed it is virtually impossible to change your mind unless the penalty is hit Pretty slowly ...reading the signs, such as the drop of a shoulder will help but other than that they are pretty difficult to defend and often the element of luck is required...all you can do is hope you dive the right way. And do your homework 👍

The shoulder drop is more a function of which foot you use to kick with. I am right footed and I have never dropped my shoulder to the right in all my years of playing football and taking penalties. It always dropped to the left (occasionally neutral) irrespective of where the ball ended up. I may be a freak of nature.

It's a fascinating discussion and something I'd like to know a lot more about. The psychology as well as physiology of attempting to save the ball from going into the net.
