Joe Allen is the one player providing energy in Stoke's midfield. For older fans - he reminds me of John Mahoney in Waddo's team of the early 70s, and not just because he's Welsh. What we need are the Hudson and Salmons-type players to complement Joe's skills. In other words, we need a playmaker who can hold the ball and pick a pass, a good tackler and someone who can drive forward with the ball. Who? Don't know ... have to divide those skills between two players and play a 4:3:3

He's a fairly limited player whose commitment and drive and attitude are his best assets.
We didn't need him when we bought him and it was probably a mistake in hindsight as it led to Sparky's interminable tinkering with formations and shapes and lineups to accommodate him, as he clearly didn't fit our 4231 system.
At the moment he is out best player as he's the only one who looks like he gives a shit.

Headless chicken, deserter of defensive position, loser of the ball, put whatever tag you choose to Allen but West Ham are sniffing around and as with Arnie, double the salary and a fair to decent Manager and heβll be gone. What then? Take your pick Adam, Ireland or Afellay. Well if that's true....he can only leave during the January transfer window, which I'm sure we'd then have the money from his sale for an adequate replacement..... Maybe even someone who holds his position, who knows??? And that player is?

Needs to be able to use his energy to be at his best . Good box to box midfielder, easily our best midfield player .
Could do with a strong physical presence alongside him.

Maybe even someone who holds his position, who knows??? And that player is? Like I said further up.....that's not my problem, that's why I don't get paid for it!!! I'm sure there's plenty out there though, it's just a matter of bringing the right one in, whoever that may be!!! π

The other options available are far worse than even ill disciplined Joe. If you bought a destroyer and played him in the deeper role with Joe you'd mainly get away with it. If we're selling, two deep lying midfielders with physical presence and some passing ability are a must. No excuses, no fluffy floaty lightweight midgets, no No10's we've got one.
