Way back in 1991 the stars all seemed aligned from Smithy to manage us. I had one mate who was in a tiny minority of Stokies who didn't want him to come. His reasoning made no sense to me at the time. In short it would be sickening, if things weren't working out, to hear Stokies abusing him. I said surely Smithy would be spared abuse. He's been through it all for Stoke City so that had to count for something. My mate reckoned it would count for nothing and if we weren't doing well he'd get stick and nastiness.
Now I realise my mate was right. But only because of the stick Shawcy has got. One of our greatest centre halves ever and he gets stick. Promotion, survival, stabilising, FA Cup Final, Europe. Ryan was a huge part of all that. Like Smithy in his later playing yeaars he has to live on his wits a bit more now because of injuries but he remains a big part of our team and big part of our story.

No one questions how fantastic he has been for us but nostalgia doesn’t disguise a below par performance. Consider how good the following should have been based on historical highs:- John Carew Michael Owen Eidur Gudjohnnsen Matthew Upson Wilfried Bony

No necessarily on this thread but the nature of some of the stick he has had in recent months is totally out of order. Too nasty. Especially for one of our true legends.

The trouble joe is modern football Half the posters on here have never seen smith play and have been brought up on endless tv football where So called pundits slaughter players and managers Every thing is analysised stats rule the world For the older fans some have a problem with the disconnect with the money involved Players used to earn twice three times a fans wage now it's a hundred times as much therefore they expect that much more Ryan has been a good servant to the club does not deserve the abuse But unfortunately defending seems to moved on from Ryan's capabilities I would only of offered him a two year deal personally

I don't believe that Ryan has all of a sudden become a bad defender. Everton and West Ham are prime example, shipping goals and then a new manager comes in, they start defending properly, is that down to a total change in personel, no it comes down to management realising they have to instil some discipline and fight into the team, as a whole and in defence.

Sometimes I think we show this player a shocking lack of respect
yes, he sometimes makes mistakes - then again - we all do
'ball watching' - when has ANY player not done that ?
but he has been and, continues to be :- the bedrock of the modern Stoke City football club

When Shawcross was out injured for 6 games we conceded 18 goals an won 4 points. With him in the side for the other 13 games we have conceded 22 goals and won 15 points. Believe me we are much better with Ryan in the team and he is the very least of our problems. When Shawcross was out injured for 7 games we conceded 23 goals and won 4 points. With him in the side for the other 14 games we have conceded 23 goals and won 16 points. Just amended a previous post in case anyone is still concerned that Ryan is still the problem

Yeah when we have Wimmer as back-up those stats are going to continue getting worse while Ryan is out.

Hes been in for a lot of our thrashings and we generally lose with him in the team.
