Well as a resident of the East Riding here in Yorkshire I will keep my fingers crossed for the City. I was very sceptical when Hull was voted for this year but it has proved to be a really worthwhile venture with lots of shows, community activities, regeneration and many other benefits for the City. So successful that they have decided to keep the organising committee in place for the next twelve months and possibly beyond..

So successful that they have decided to keep the organising committee in place for the next twelve months and possibly beyond.. As another resident of the East Riding I can only agree with this. Hull reckon they have had an extra million tourists this year with resulting benefits to local businesses so it would be very much in Stoke's interests to win it. One of the blokes I have a pint with before the match was rubbishing the notion on Saturday - I had to remind him of bottle kilns, other potbanks around the place, the Minton building, Bennett, Mitchell, the canal network, Lemmy, Raphael Ravenscroft and so on. Stoke has lots going for it. BTW Drayton, where in the ER are you? I am in Hutton Cranswick

Small world. I did notice young Jack Brereton, Conservative MP for Stoke South, ask a question today in PMQ's about backing the Stoke bid.
I was a little sceptical at first but fingers crossed.

I think Sunderland is too close to Hull in many eyes. Paisley further North. Stoke and Coventry are more central..... GGGOOOAAARRRNNN STOKE!! I think there could/should be a strong shout for Dundee or the Derry/Belfast/Strabane bid to 'win' European City of Culture. Funded by us of course.

I don't think they will be eligible once the UK leaves the EU, Roger. I'm sure I've seen this recently and the cities aren't happy that they have spent money already preparing their bids which they won't get back

The EU have said the UK cities now won't be considered because of Brexit. All bollocks of course because in the past non EU cities have won like Istanbul. Government not happy that the UK cities were asked to spend money on their final bid submissions after the referendum result but I hope the UK Government awards a (non) European City of Culture to one of the finalists.

I hope you get it. Stoke City of culture has a good ring to it. I mean, who would want to be sent to Coventry?

I was browsing through a selection of tourist leaflets in Tesco's in Lincoln. There were four (more than anywhere else) promoting Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire. Seems the publicity machine is working overtime. I was so impressed, I might actually visit the place!

Much as I'd dearly love us to win it I have to say I can't see it happening Don't think the Welsh have had one yet? So they'll be due a go, Coventry are favourites, I really, really hope I'm wrong, it would be fantastic for the City, just what we need.

It'd be a real boost for us but there's always a niggling doubt. A shot in the arm definitely.

Go on Stoke. Fingers crossed and that. Talking to someone earlier who was extolling the virtues of the City parks, said the fountain up Hanley is mint. Also effusive about the lit up Cultural Quarter and a gin in the former Buck's Jewellers. She acknowledged the lack of an artisan bread shop, but on the whole nice to hear such positivity. I reckon of the options we're strongest in music, theatre, arts and that... Two Uni's, two professional nogger Clubs. do eet for Oatcake cuisine, Arthur Berry, Discharge and Lemmy, Freddie Jones, Emma Bridgewater, The Torch and Golden, and Club Paper Jack and that. etc. Edit: and for Widgie & Bruce Forthright.

Stoke City , City of Curry Shops is more our line I think.
This City needs root and branch surgery starting with the planners.

City of corrupt councillors maybe, but City of Culture, nah! I love Stoke but I don't want us to win. To be honest, the whole 'campaign' has been half-arsed and a fucking embarrassment.

And yet we still managed to be shortlisted... According to the radio this morning £3.5 Billion pounds has been the benefit to Hull as a result of their winning it. I'm struggling to see your reasoning if I'm honest but each to their own.

"....it will be the boost the place badly needs" Like the Garden Festival was? But I hope we get it too. Goaaarnn Stoke! The garden festival was ok was it not. It transformed the area and left the city with another piece of green space. I felt the garden festival and the tranformation of the site were both really good. But I was very disappointed that it became a retail park afterwards as with all the green space, the canal, the cable car, etc I felt it could have become a very attractive leisure area which people from both within the city and without could have visited and enjoyed. Instead, it became what it is.

I find it quite strange almost everyone on here complain about the city council Why do they keep voting for them ?

As I intimated earlier, I'd have been much happier for there to be less retail & office space, and to have seen the outdoor & indoor leisure side of things ramped up considerable more to become something of a tourist attraction rather than just another retail park which is the same as so many others up and down the country.
I would love SoT to have done something different, rather than produce a 'me too'.
Anyway, that's all I've got to say about it.
I hope we get the City of Culture although suspect from the ramping in the likes of the Guardian today, Coventry will win it. "The mayor of the West Midlands, the former John Lewis boss Andy Street, said he hoped the country would look a new at Coventry, the birthplace of Philip Larkin, if it won. This will force a re-examination and the truth will come out,” he said, adding that a vote for Coventry would be one for the Midlands as a whole. Street believes the award would be an endorsement of community diversity at a time of growing divisions across the country – pointing out that 27% of the city’s residents were born outside the UK"
Ggoooaaaarnn Stoke.
