I'm staggered at how badly the club is being managed that he's become such an important player for us again.
Love the bloke but if you'd told me he'd be our most effective striker when we had the front 3 of 2015 I'd have laughed in your face.

I cannot detect comments saying that he is too old ( and has experienced some nasty injuries)
It seems too risky to involve the like of N’Goy, Campbell - Man Utd can afford to include their youngsters because of the quality players in the team
Crouch signing is a good move Imo
Is this good timing to make this announcement and possibly deflect some of the negative press?

It's good news as he's the only striker the manager trusts. It's bad news because it sums up what a mess we're in. A striker he trusts but never starts  I was thinking the other day at work (btw, I never ever think about Stoke/football when I'm at work so there must be something badly wrong at Stoke if that happens) and the amount of problems/mistakes I came up with in my head was quite staggering. How many other managers in the league would play a striker at RWB? arguably our best striker at that. Who would decide on a formation or "philosophy" if you will and then not buy the requisite players for that formation? In the same breathe, how many would spunk nearly £20m on 1 player who isn't exactly proven in this league when that money was badly needed to be spent elsewhere? surely 2 solid wing backs would've brought more to the team than a potentially decent CB? Who would chase a striker for 2 years and then decide when he's actually fit he's best sitting on the bench? (if he's lucky) Who would give a contract to a player who, if he was a horse, would've been shot dead by now? (Johnson, not that I needed to say his name) You could throw Afellay into that as well seeing as he isn't getting a kick, a place in the squad which should've been taken by a younger/fitter person. Who goes into a Premier League season with only 2 central midfielders he trusts? 1 of which quite clearly needs resting. Who gives a shit how old he is? If Diouf and Berahino had forged a lethal partnership, I'd have still been happy to have Crouch at the club.

He doesn't really command a transfer fee if you were to sell him and he brings something different to play if(when) it goes Pete Tongue
Agree with the above though when we say its a bit sad when he is arguably our most lethal striker

A no brainer to extend his stay at Stoke. A striker he seems to have a lot of faith in, but seemingly not enough that he is asked to start matches.
I like Crouch, but I think Bayern said above, it's bad that we are having to still rely on Crouch, he'll be 37 soon. But listen, regardless of how old he is, if he can still knock them in the back of the next I'm not going to complain, because his game style works at his age, especially as he doesn't have to really be fussed about his pace.
We do need a RWB now so we can have Diouf upfront, meanwhile Bera still hasn't made an impact.
A good signing but a sign of how poor our striking options have seemingly become, especially when one is playing in wing back.

I think the fact that we are ecstatic about this says more about the state of our squad than the signing itself. Happy for Crouch, great bloke, great servant to the club and a likely leader behind the scenes. However, not the type of player (age, pace etc) that we can justify investing 40K a week into.

Its a good signing IMO. Reflects badly on Hughes that he's spent so much money and yet Crouch is still our most effective striker. But thats not a reason not to re-sign him

General, I'm still staggered Coates can't see it as simply as this and you know 80% of fans must now be thinking the same. I'm always flabbergasted by the fact we get the usual "there are no candidates out there that are 'suitable" banded around.
Football clubs are a business these days if any other business was utilising staff in this way (having the chief project manager make the tea and Betty from Accounts operating the lathe) then questions would be asked at board level of the senior management team. There would undoubtably be casualties but then a Business Would advertise or possibly 'head hunt' a suitable candidate paying headhunter fees.
I'm certain were Coates put the feelers out then agents of managers would make contact however whether Scholes and Cartwright have enough quality about them to negotiate a deal, sack Hughes and get a new man in is debatable.
Anyway I think if we drop into the bottom three again at any point he will have no choice but to dispense of Hughes and his teams services. |

Every team needs a back up option for every position and preferably an option who brings something different to the team. Crouch fits the bill perfectly. Rather than get upset about us signing Crouch for another season people would be better off concerning themselves about us signing (or developing) a first choice striker who can lead the line and settling on a system to use them most effectively. |
