Hughes has taken his crown, this board was divided under the Pulis reign but the amount of talk and concern for relegation was no where near what we are experiencing now, things may have been as dull as they are now but they were never as dangerous and it did not go on for this long I just hope that the club can turn this around somehow before the club find themselves in that bottom three, from what I have seen so far I am not sure how they will do it mind because there is no fight, resilience, steel or determination from anywhere within the club.......more Pizza anyone. Looking on the bright side, if we do go down at least I will get a row of seats to myself again, I will find it easier to pick and choose at the last minute if I want to go an away game plus the bus back from the ground will be a lot less hectic so I can stay until the 90th minute.......... so not everything is all doom and gloom about the place.  |

I actually think that the attitude now is different to TP’s last season. Before his exit there weren’t many that were apathetic. The divide was severe with fans split with polarising views, rimmers and wank stains were bound.
TP had (and although far less now even still HAS) some staunch supporters that were totally against the change of manager. Whereas now I don’t think there are swathes of fans in staunch steadfast support of Les.
In my opinion those that haven’t yet definitively called for a change haven’t done so through their out and out support of Les. It is just more of a ponder or justifiable question as to whom might be available! More might even side that a new appointment is needed but at the end of the season, which is more suited to Stoke and the Chairman.
My gut feeling, from those I talk to, is that the “Hughes in” fans are actually more like the “Hughes out at the end of the season”. These will soon be converted to the number calling for his sack now if we lose these next two. Being honest, a point rather than 3 in the next 2 matches and he has to go.

Everton have made a complete mess sacking their manager , and may continue to struggle for some time.

I think most people would agree with that, but there's an awful lot of history being rewritten about things. Maybe history is being rewritten but it’s worth remembering that as late as April 15th last season, if we’d have lost to Hull they’d have been just 3 points behind us with just 5 games to go. We we’re closer to the mire at a pretty late stage last season than a lot of people care to remember and if anything its got fucking worse. If you believe what Pulis delivered was a sacking offence then you can’t possibly think Hughes should keep his job. |

That sacking was knee jerk and stupid you don't sack your manager until you've lined somebody up to replace him on the qt. Smacks of the Wolves fiasco with McCarthy not so long ago absolutely naive from the people at the top. Does worry me that its the sort of old fashioned thing that Coates would do. He should have 3rd parties sounding out replacements as we speak be that for next week or next Summer. I don't think he's taking us down this season but Hughes is a busted flush. |

There aren't two camps - there are several:
1 Those that want Hughes to go and don't care if we go down.
2 Those that wants rid of Hughes and have a blind faith that a new manager will make the difference between staying up and going down.
3 Those that believe Hughes should go but recognise that changing the manager now is a massive risk and could well backfire but believe the risk is worth taking.
4 Those that believe Hughes should stay on the grounds that he's more likely to keep us up than any of the likely alternatives and a call made at the end of the season based on whether he has delivered on expectations (i.e. a top 10 finish).
5 Those that think Hughes should stay on regardless.
I'm for option 4. I may not agree but I get those that favour option 3 but I think those opting for 1, 2 or 5 have more faith in their own opinion than is good for the club.
I really don't have any confidence that we would attract a manager at this stage of the season who would do better than Highes. It's incredibly close this year - any team from 7th down has a realistic chance of getting relegated. Hughes teams have generally done better in the second half of the season and we are only a couple of good results off the top half - as well as couple of bad results form the relegation zone. Given how close it is stability might be key - in the same way as the instability at Everton is dragging them further into the mire by the day.
The best time to change managers is the end of the season - and I still think that's the best option if it turns out we do need to make a change.

The OP is correct, there is a big divide in opinion.
I am firmly in the Hughes camp, why?
A 3 9th places, + 13th place, 2 points less than 9th. Currently 3 points less than 10th, with two thirds of the season to go and we know Hughes always starts slowly and there was a difficult opening fixture programme.
B Hughes attracts good quality players and we are scoring more goals than over half the teams in the Prem. Defending is poor but that can be fixed.
C I look at what is happening at West Ham, West Brom., Everton, Leicester, and Palace, and my view is "no thank you, I'd prefer to stick with Hughes". It's easy to sack the manager, it is nigh impossible to find a good one who will do better than A above. Watford won't release their manager, and I don't want my team to play like 12 goals Burnley. Lots of praise for Newcastle, Bournemouth, Brighton, and Huddersfield managers who have just 1 or 2 points more than Stoke.
D Hughes is guilty of making some mistakes with the players he has bought, but has generally let the right ones go, including those who don't want to pull on a Stoke City shirt. More will be going during the next 2 transfer windows as he rebuilds the squad. The players are behind him and all desperate to succeed.
What would it take to change my mind?
A In the relegation zone at Christmas.
B A player revolt.
Finally what I would hate to see is the crowd turning against the manager, and then the owners if they decide to stick with Hughes, because I would seriously worry that the owners would say enough is enough and sell up their businesses/assets and Stoke City would be on a course to oblivion like Sunderland, Blackburn, etc.

The Summer is always the best time to change manager but if you are going to do it mid season its got to be done in the next two or three weeks its no use panicking after the January window. I guess most people do fall into either group 3 or 4, although you're right 1, 2 and 5 do indeed exist. You're also right that the best time to change manager is in the summer, it is far, far more risky doing it when your back is against the wall and the transfer money has already been spent part way into a season. That's precisely why I think he should have gone last summer. I said at the time, that those people backing him then would need to back him now because there just wouldn't be any decent candidates around if we ultimately got ourselves into a sticky position, it seems however that a lot of the people who supported him in the summer have had a change of heart. Me, I hope that somehow we can stumble through to the end of the season without getting relegated and then replace him properly next summer, although I think that policy is probably about as risky as replacing him now, it's hard to have an opinion on this without knowing who the actual replacement is. Lose the next two though and I expect he'll be toast regardless of who's available. |
