I'm still not convinced with it, we looked much better in the second half when we changed the formation to 4 at the back!!!
As for the zonal marking....the big fella (Maguire I think it was) kept standing off at the back when they had a corner, with nobody marking him, it's baffling stuff???

Zonal marking is basically saying ‘Have a free header lads’ complete Bollox.
Can we get back to basic man for man marking facing the Ball and getting your bonce on it first!

Persevere with zonal marking. Yes we concede goals but statistics show that there is a higher defending success rate. Perhaps the trick is to prevent giving the opposition so many corners. Consider this:- After many years of threatening to clamp down on excessive grappling from set-pieces, this season has seen Premier League referees penalise holding and shirt-pulling more than ever before. This has coincided with an increase in the number of set-piece goals (0.65 per game) and led to marking from corners coming under increased scrutiny. Unfortunately, it has also brought out one of the worst traits in British football punditry; the inherent distrust of zonal marking. For every goal scored against a team marking zonally, the system, rather than any mistake from an individual, is blamed. I'm in the minority that quite like zonal marking.
Every player has a set area and as long as they attack the ball in that space they should be favourites to either win the ball or make it difficult for the opposing player.
The problem is if someone switches off and this is no different to a defender man marking who let's his man get a run on him.
Zonal marking needs drill after drill on the training ground so everyone knows exactly what area they are expected to cover.
Man marking just creates this pushing and shoving that the officials are cracking down on.

Leicester corner played beyond the far post and nodded back by an unmarked player and then the shot goes in. A few minutes later, exactly the same happens except that the shot is blocked. Could have been 2-0. Whose 'zone' is the one beyond the post, or is no one allocated that area?

Zonal marking is utter shite if you bring back all ten outfielders and have no-one on the posts. How the fuck to you define the zones with such congestion in the box? No wonder our set piece defending is a shambles.
Leave two up, they have to leave three or more back and the box is easier to defend zonally or man marking. I prefer the latter given the individual responsibility.
Simples.

Needs tweaking not ditching.
More about Zouma being rooted and bundled over, man mountain Maguire getting his head on it, and Jack not being commanding enough at corners.
None of which changes with man marking.
Bigger issue for me is not having a wee man towards the halfway line as an outlet

Hughes made a number of big mistakes today and two of them were this 5 at the back garbage plus zonal marking.
He brought off Sobhi and Diouf when they both offered threat and would have done well alongside Crouchy.
Any decision to give Berahino any game time is a mistake whichever way you look at it. Mame had just caused consternation in the Leicester backline when he was unjustly hauled off. Berahino replaced him by twice showing very little other than two instances of tip-tap on the halfway line. At 2-2 the game was ours for the taking but this second substitution nullified our threat.

That's an inherent weakness with it!! mmmm not necessarily to the extent Zouma was for their goal. What happened re the other nine corners? If a man's in your 'zone' you pick him up jostle with him. If they're running in block him. Man marking always saw us in a tussle/wrestle.. more rooted if owt. And not really acceptable {for us at least} in today's climate. I think it's improved Ryan's game releasing him from wwf. |

Our defenders are all a split second slower reacting to the ball than the forwards and that’s all it takes in this league. Shawcross is always going to struggle in zonal making system because he has spent the past 15/20 years grabbing his man. I’m Shawcross’s biggest fan and every other aspect of his game today was excellent. He also benefited from Leicester not being any better at the other end and he should have scored. Old dog, new tricks. |

As I understand zonal marking (and maybe I’m missing something because otherwise it doesn’t make sense) -
1. How do you defend ‘your’ zone if 3 players run into it simultaneously?
and
2. How do you defend against someone running onto (and jumping onto) a ball that only the attacking team knows where it’s intended to be (assuming they’ve practised attacking zonal defenders)?
Is it my misunderstanding or is it just bollocks?
