General motorway question: I thought 4 Lane motorways were designed to relieve congestion etc so why are lorries then allowed to use lanes 1 2 and 3? It’s not the lorries you have to worry about it’s the idiots in the cars who drive at 50/60 in lane 3 and 4 turning a 4 lane motorway into a dual carriageway

Basically what we are all saying is i think. Tell me if im wrong. There is too many cars trying to use that stretch of motorway. There’s too many cars full stop! My neighbour is really getting on my nerves, there’s 4 of em. Mum, Dad, Son and daughter. The dad has two cars, the mum one and the kids one each. I live on a terraced road where you need parking permits. They take up about 9 houses worth of space. Then they have the nerve to come around and ask to borrow my permit when they have a visitor! The dad doesn’t even “officially” live there! Ahhh that’s better😀

Ahhh that’s better😀 I detest people who have the entire road to park then think it’s ok to park at the bottom of your drive, not across our dropped pavement but opposite makes it so hard to reverse out. If I scuff an alloy I’d go nuts and not sure what I’d do. We've had 4 skips recently and I’ve politely asked people not to park opposite to our drive, one youth was a right dick, I was hoping the skip lorry would have whacked his car.

The neighbours kicked off before they were built saying it'd affect parking, all 3 or 4 cars - mum, dad, 2 kids etc. None of them bother to dig out their front garden and create off-road parking. Flats are built and the cheeky cunts who were moaning park their cars in those new parking spaces! Twats.

I worked in Stafford about 20 years ago in highways development control. The stretch they've not made 4 lanes between 15 and 16 was 250,000 cars a week over capacity then. It's a massive bottleneck.

These motorways where the hard shoulder has been changed into the "inside lane/lane 1" scare the hell out of me. What are you supposed to do if you break down ? Where do you park/abandon your vehicle ? I thought the whole premise of the hard shoulder was to be a safety lane for such instances - for you and also for other road users.
No doubt it's down to the cost of building an extra lane v potential accidents/fatalities but just because there is such a huge volume of traffic on the motorways nowadays surely can't justify removing the safety lane ?
I used to drive 35,000 to 40,000 miles a year before I retired, but now I avoid motorways as much as possible for any journey, although my annual mileage is thankfully vastly reduced.

Recall driving down to see our daughter at Warwick Uni years ago, never in 40 years of driving have I driven in such torrential rain so much that we pulled off at the services, it was scary believe me, Cars were flying past us although I couldn’t see the bonnet on our car and aqua plaining badly, I’ve always said people are willing too die or kill someone in order to get home a few minutes early.

Never seen so many cars trying to get round Alsager. know why now.
Police, firefighters and the air ambulance have been called out to a crash on the M6 - with the motorway set to shut in both directions. National Highways has confirmed the emergency services have been called to the scene on the southbound carriageway between junctions 17 for Sandbach and 16 for the A500 into Stoke-on-Trent.

I believe it was near to the bridge on the Radway Road loads of flashing lights as I went over towards Alsager. The problem is exacerbated by the reappearance of the permanent temporary traffic lights again by the Hollies it's now getting beyond a joke. Alsager is almost gridlocked the A50 through Rode Heath bumper to bumper.

I was driving down the A500 last week around the Audley turn off and some nut job lorry driver simply pulled into the outside lane, honestly he didn’t give a shit and how a Volvo missed him I’ll never know, dick head then did the same when I overtook him shortly afterwards. I went nuts with him at the M6 junction when the lights were on red, honestly some drivers need banning for life and jailing in cases.

They seem to have an everlasting project of replacing metal central barriers with concrete. Huge stretches of motorway everywhere getting them

I came back from the Cotswolds on Friday, thought I'd avoid the M6 to drop mum off in Stoke and to call in at a NT place near the A50, what a wank idea that was with those queues for about 30 minutes to the roundabout. I then had to be in Oxford on Saturday morning, back home on Sunday, the M42 was shut all weekend junctions 6-8 for HS2 works, and the A34 Oxford bypass was shut the weekend for bridge works

I have to take fairly regular trips to Manchester at the moment for work and my experiences haven't been too bad of late. Getting into Manchester itself is hateful and seems worse than 10 years ago but the M6 has been ok. However, the traffic in Alsager generally is awful these days and I suspect it might be an increase in problems on the motorway.
The solution is right in the palm of our hands yet would never happen under this government. The Tory answer to congestion is something as dangerous as smart motorways. Fuck safety... Take the safety lane away and turn it into another 60-70mph crash zone. The solid long term solution is to incentivize working from home, where the role is compatible. If staff can work from home, make it a requirement a certain number of days a week and provide some form of relief to make it worth everyone's while.
Naturally, there's a trust issue/stigma with working from home that continues to follow it around, but there's a simple answer to that as well. Judge people on their output rather than an arbitrary integer of prescribed hours that they are contracted to work. You can't police people going and jerking off in their bedrooms, but if their output is just as good as when they are in the office, do you actually care? Should you?
I'm not suggesting that we sack off the minimum expectations altogether when it comes to contracted hours but the fact we continue to use 'hours worked' as a measuring bar for performance is fucking mental. It should be bottom of the pile behind a whole host of other factors.

Left home at 5AM this morning, in Stevenage at 8AM, quickest I've ever done it, no hold ups anywhere for a change.
I was sunbathing sat on the central barriers of the M56 for 2 1/2 hours about 3 weeks ago when that was shut south of Warrington, overturned tanker and some other cars involved, could see the air ambulance landing not too far in front, they eventually cut the central barrier and turned us trapped vehicles around.

It should be bottom of the pile behind a whole host of other factors. The solution is to get people to actually use the motorways property. How we do this, I have no idea. Maybe, when people pass their tests, they need to clock etc amount of hours / miles on a motorway with a driving instructor before they are allowed on it. It's what I did when I passed my driving test and before I ventured out on the motorway but their would be loads of loopholes to enforce this like how do we enforce this on people that have been driving for many years or how does this get enforced with the foreign driver that visits our shores. 4 lane motorways are the biggest pain in the arse. Why do most people, these days, just sit in the 3rd & 4th lanes and are not even bothered about getting out of those particular lanes. Between Stoke and Manchester is the prime example and a hotspot for accidents where hardly anybody uses the first two lanes. I tell you what though, I use the first two lanes of that stretch of motorway to undertake the people not coming out of lanes 3 & 4. Maybe one solution is that you can use any lane to get past a vehicle just like they do in the states.
