Hurricane IRMA possibly the biggest Atlantic storms ever is currently battering the Caribbean Islands and is expected to soon hit Cuba and then Florida.
wheather this can be attributed to global warming is difficult to say but we do seem to be getting more and more extreme weather recently.
I have experienced a few gales and even storms in my time, but I must say that wind speeds of 185mph and gusts of 200 plus are beyond comprehension.
Anticipate wide spread damage and possible loss of life.

Looks to be heading towards Antigua and British Virgin Islands, both places I've been to, hope everybody is well prepared and will be allright. Especially those who are looking to protect the Pussers Rum Factory on BVI

I've got a close friend who's out there on a Carribean cruise at the moment. Fingers crossed for her. They will have known about its approach for some time and cruise liners will run to calmer waters with ease. No need to worry. One good thing about Hurricanes is that they are very predictable well in advance.

They arrive in Miami on the 15th all being well.

I was in Jamaica a few years ago when sandy hit.didn't affect us that much as we were kept inside the hotel. Infact it was carry on as normal we had an extra days holiday.next morning the devasting effect's of a hurricane became apparent.the hotel might have had a few palm trees blown over and a few ground floor rooms became flooded but for those that live in Jamaica in what I would call a shed. things were a lot bleaker these tin huts were skittled like a house of cards

I used to sail in the BVI quite a bit some years ago. Got quite friendly with the locals . I asked a guy(Carib speak) I knew " I don't understand why people are living in quite poor houses but have expensive cars parked outside" ?
He replied, "We don't think like you. All we want is a nice car/pickup, a tv and a refrigerator. When a Hurricane comes through we just buy a bag of nails and stick the roof back on " !!
The biggest danger is flying debris and mud slides from the torrential downpour that comes with the storm

Matthew was bad but Irma is a fucking monster of a storm. Its due in The Bahamas late Friday and Saturday. Like someone said, they are generally predictable so people can prepare as best they can, but when it arrives, all you can do is sit through it and hope for the best. Rum and beer supply topped up yesterday, ( priorities ), gallons of water bought, cars filled with petrol, generator fuelled up, house getting shuttered up today. Fingers crossed.

All I can say is the flight deck wind speed anomometer, which could read up to 180mph wind speed, has its indicator jammed against the high end stops pin. During the worst of the hurricane the ships company was closed up at damage control stations which is unheard of outside of conflict. One of the four generators failed due to water ingress through the intakes on 01 deck and as the hurricane was subsiding we lost steering gear due to burst hydraulic hose. If this had happened few hours earlier the ship would probably have floundered.

As Nassau Dave says this is a monster and we have not heard the last of it yet.
To wipe out so many islands is almost unprecedented.
I have not been trailing it as I have been out but fear for the Turks and Bahamas.
Heard little on the news about BV & USI , did they get a miss ?
Good luck and be safe out there.

I've got a lot of friends down on the Keys who have hauled ass outta there over the last 24 hours, and they said it's chaos across South Florida with massive traffic jams and gas stations running out of fuel. A lot of people have headed up to Orlando, and are now realizing they haven't gone far enough north - looks like Orlando will take a bit of a battering if the current path projections are accurate......but Miami, Homestead and the Keys are going to take a proper beating. Make no mistake, this storm looks like a complete fucking beast.

No, BVI, Anguilla and Barbuda have taken a real battering, one governer has said Barbuda is unfit for living on atm, the Navy support ship has arrived at Anguilla, planes flying out from the UK today with troops and aid. Hurrican Jose is now coming and in the same path as Irma to give the poor buggers another hammering.

There are 2 more on their way, though nowhere near as strong, could be more devastating as they will batter already severely hit areas... Glad you OK ND...My Daughter not on the Ships anymore, and her last contract was all over the Carrib, including many stops in Nassau... but apparently they move all the ships days in advance to calmer waters and just change itineraries. Gonna be some time before the ships return to most of the islands, who wants to visit what looks like a war zone.

Once they have completed their destructive coarse northwards these depressions often swing to the east and cross the Atlantic as they slowly loose their strength.
Depending on many variables such as the jet stream and the Azores high they may well arrive off Europe anywhere between N Scotland or Biscay. It will be interesting to see what if any kind of weather they bring with them.

My mate lives at Clearwater Beach, fortunately at the top where it joins the mainland so should be out of range for the storm surge at least. They live in a small gated community, his wife and kids have evacuated north with most of the other residents but he is staying behind and bunkering in with one of the neighbours. Partly because he works for a vetinerary hospital and will be on call as soon as it passes but mainly because he wants to defend against any looters ( this is his Rorkes Drift he says !).
Just had this text from him earlier today:
We're fucked weather wise.
Last inventory, we are in pre-depletion mode currently, is 41 16 ounce budwisers, 22 12 ounce buds, 15 Jai Alais (7.5%) - I bought a generator to plug the fridge in in case we lose power to keep them all cold, 1 full 1.75 liter Stolichnaya, 1 half 1.75 bottle skyye vodka, 1 full .75 liter bottle of Balvenie double wood, and 1 1.75 bottle of Captain Morgan. If I drain that, we can go French. I have about 30 bottles of red wine.
Arsenal: Glock 43 9MM, Sig Sauer P320 9MM - 50 rounds of hollow point, 200 rounds full metal jacket, 1 Mossberg 12 gauge riot gun with 40-45 rounds of 000 buckshot and 10 rounds of deer slugs.
Some food too.
Man City really pumped the bin dippers yesterday, huh?
