Is that our entire navy or do we have a few other boats as well?

Just read the above posts. Isn't it the case that those who speak out most are often those who attack the very things that are needed to defend their liberty to speak out? Former generations have made huge sacrifices to secure our freedom, but they would happily give away our freedom. Weapons are not intended to be used, but are necessary to deter those who would choose to impose their will on us and interfere with our trade, travel, and other liberties.

She is a sight up close. I have a great photo when I visited Portsmouth dockyard a few months ago. It has HMS Victory in the foreground looking through the rigging and masts and HMS QE in the background looking all grey and magnificent, a real tale of maritime power centuries apart.

That does tend to be the case I’m afraid and they are of course entitled to their view...... provided they agree to be at the front of the queue in putting themselves in harms way and between those who wish to do us harm and the service men and women keeping the country and it’s interests safe.

I agree with a lot of the comments on the pro side and agin side. On the pro side the most conflicts on the planet are in Africa! Airfields either don’t exist or are unserviceable. Therefore, sea power comes into its own? On the agin side apart from the cost is it’s size? Hasn’t Russia said it has developed a missile that would make HMSQE the most expensive scrap iron since Steptoe and Son?
It’s a fair point that Lewin needed a war to save the RN from swingeing cuts? But Thatcher didn’t want the American brokered peace deal either? As a matter of fact I joined the MoD in the wake of The Falklands and it is true that the Russians told us we never thought you would have the balls to do it? So there is a deterrent effect! However, isn’t it curious all our democracy loving Tories wanted to fight over a few thousand sheep farmers yet are terrified of 6 million Scots having a second Indy referendum?

Do we have bottom cover (submarine) for this battle group I wonder? All the tweets talk about the escorts being air defence. They must have an sub hunting frigate in there too? The Russians will be very interested in this.

Some great pictures of HMS Queen Elizabeth out at sea with HMS Prince Of Wales, and coming back into Portsmouth before heading off to the South China Sea I believe. And while I'm here, our new Type 31 Frigates will be called... HMS Active HMS Bulldog HMS Campbeltown HMS Formidable HMS Venturer Four of them names are ace, I have no idea who/what/where Campbeltown is. I assume it's of some significance, anyone? (Nevermind, I've just been & found out... HMS Campbeltown will only be the 3rd ship to carry this name. The first was made famous by the commando raid on St Nazaire in 1942, known as the the greatest raid of all. The second was a Batch III Type 22 frigate that decommissioned in 2011 , prematurely axed from the fleet in the 2010 Defence Review.)

Shiny as a new pin after refit in Rosyth in 2010, an absolute wreck after being decommissioned in 2012 due to the Austerity cut backs, that nearly also claimed the QE class carriers. Boris says there’s more Submarines on the way, so I assume there’ll be a new class of hunter killers beyond the Astute class. The steel has already been cut for the trident successor class (Dreadnought), but I’d like to see some diesel-electric or AIP boats in the mix somehow.

As a young guardsman in 1995 I did a 4 week navy attachment (basically a jolly) on the HMS Campbeltown. Flew out to Sicily, sailed round the med for a bit and back to Plymouth or Portsmouth somewhere south. Had a great time.

Impressive sight for sure. I keep meaning to get down to Portsmouth one day when either of them are coming in or going out. I’ve seen them stationary, but I bet watching them on a level as they move gives a whole new perspective.

Quiet right Peter. I was going to suggest staying in the Gosport area. From there it is a very inexpensive frequent ferry ride across to the dockyard.

I’ve got a great photo from the deck of HMS Victory which has got all the masts, rigging and cannons in the foreground and in the background is HMS QE. I’ve turned the photo into black and white and it’s a real old meets new representation. I’m not a photographer, but I’m quite proud of the story it tells.

His specialist area is the electrical systems which by the sounds of it involves going to each ship next up for works at whichever dockyard it happens to be at, globally by the sounds of it, assessing what's required and then putting the work out to tender from what appears to be a very specialist list of approved MOD contractors. He tried explaining on one occasion something of what he actually does, it was a short conversation!.🤔
