What a grand sight she is... She'd look so much better if we had some aircraft to go on her, though! We've got a few (ex) Forces on here. Is she something we've desperately needed, or is she a massive waste of money?

Is it just having aircraft carriers you have a problem with, or do you have a problem with us spending money on the Royal Navy full stop?

It's a shame (in your case) that the Labour government who ordered these carriers, also signed to prohibitive penalty clauses. So much so, when David Cameron wanted to scrap them it was too expensive to do so.

UK nuclear 'deterrent' is a vanity excercise and a hugely expensive one at that.
Ships Like this we might actually use.

A great sight, and one that would be useful in conflicts like the balkans, Iraq, and with our nuclear deterrent would stop nutters in North Korea and Iran achieving their aims.

Turning her around to point bows to the sea in a strong breeze will be an awesome task.

Is it just having aircraft carriers you have a problem with, or do you have a problem with us spending money on the Royal Navy full stop? the country is skint national debt has never been higher the £ never lower yet here we go spunking money on big ships, high speed trains, space travel, yet all the while we are being asked to put in our own pockets [which I do] to fund hospices, cancer research and many many more. I would love to see the official figures on every £ spent but I suspect same as Wembley a lot of people in the city made a lot of money.

Fantastic sight to see. Im still cant quite get my ahead around the huge delays with the F35s though. We are still at least a year away from deck landing trials and according to the news this morning it might 2023 before we see her fully operational (probably due to issues with the aircraft).

We'd have been fucked without them in 82 needless war to save thatchers skin You need to read up real history Putts not the shit spouted by the left wing media. Saint Maggie actually didn't want to go to war and didn't believe we could because of the cuts that John Nott had proposed in his 1981 SDR (we were on the verge of selling our 2 Carriers Invincible and Hermes to Australia, disbanding 3 Commando Brigade and scrapping Fearless and Intrepid thus destroying our amphibious capability in addition to permanently withdrawing HMS Endurance which was our only permanent presence in South Atlantic) It was the Chief of Defence Staff and Admiral of the Fleet Sir Terence Lewin who persuaded her that our status in the world, UN and on the Security Council would diminish overnight if we rolled over and allowed the Argies to keep their ill gotten gains. It would also send the wrong signals to those wishing to annex other British territories such as Gibraltar. He then put his neck on the block and promised to have a task force prepared and deployed in 4 days which he achieved with some chaos. I agree that it certainly helped her to gain popularity and votes for the 1983 Election but it certainly wasn't as you describe " a needless war to save Maggies skin." Unless you are happy to see a military dictator invade British Sovereign territory and for us to shrug our shoulders and let them get on with it ignoring the wishes of the populace of that territory.

We are still at least a year away from deck landing trials and according to the news this morning it might 2023 before we see her fully operational (probably due to issues with the aircraft). Originally HMS QE was going to take the Lightning F35 conventional fighter that would have needed catapults and arrester gear to operate. Had we gone for this option then both carriers would have been fully operational much sooner. However because the carriers were not steam powered, which would have given them the necessary technology to operate catapults, a new hydraulic catapult system was required. It was decided that thus was far too expensive so the design reverted to VSTOL operations for which we didn't have the aircraft as the Harrier was being phased out. Instead the F35B was chosen as the VSTOL fighter which was still in developent. Hence the delay, but don't forget she will operate a squadron of Merlin EH101 helicopters and be capable of operating attack helicopters such as the Apache until F35B is fully operational.

I think the idea now is that the QE will operate like a floating military airfield capable of conducting all kinds of operations simultaneously not just VSTOL. I agree though the conventional carrier would have been a better option as a strike carrier.
