Hey guys
so my question is what does the club spend its money on?
with the club reportedly make 113.4mil in prize money last year and should make similar money this upcoming season. With selling a few player this window including arnie for 20mil with another 5mil in add ons.
im seriously confused as to what the club chooses to spend its money on. i know wages are gonna be a big chunk of the budget but with the club being so guarded about their operations and finances can some people out there that know more than i do give me an insight into the clubs spending?
ps. always have this discussion with my dad so would be nice to have a few answers

Factor in the £13m saved on whelan, Walters, Given and Bardslely wages I think you can see Which way it's going. Spending is not a guarantee I agree but you need to renew and recruit and we are not doing it. Throw enough darts at a board some go in the treble 20, well except for TS And his gimp

my point is what does it matter how much money we have if we don't spend any . well clearly the club spends money. it has wages and ground costs and all that what im asking for is an insight to where the club chooses to spend it money? wouldnt it be better if the fans had a clearer idea as to where their money goes and why the club choose to spend it like that?

I read that our wage bill is over 85 million really? so whos getting the money? we havent got anybody on 100k a week do we? so hows it get to 85mil? Very easily. £85m would buy you 7 £100k per week players. Perhaps we don't have anyone on £100k per week but we have an awful lot more than 7 players. 'Do the math' as they say Stateside!

my point is what does it matter how much money we have if we don't spend any . Your point is also wrong. We were the lowest spenders last year but not in 2015. Norwich, Swansea, Everton and ARSENAL all spent less than us. So what's your point?

Yes you're right, I failed to 'do the math' I believe that is what is known as an 'epic fail' in todays parlance! I'll try again so £85m would buy you 16 £100k per week players. How many players do we have in total? You could quickly then arrive at an average wage.

Paying wages, transfer fees (including agents), running an academy, travelling and accommodation for staff, maintaining a stadium and associated facilities, community work, paying off debts etc. Same as most clubs I would imagine.
A short vid explaining our 15/16 finances:

I remember an artical that said from 2006 to 2012 the number of club employees pretty much doubled. That number could conceivably have contibued to increase.
Many of the players will have been given pay rises or been replaced (attenpted to be replaced) by players who demand more. The owners will likely have wanted to recoup some of their investment.
We just had work on the stadium.
Basically I dont really know, but its an expensive old sport is nogger.

You won't get any answers here because nobody other than the club have a clue as to where our money goes.

What has it got to do with fans? What can you do about it? Would you "invest" a few thousand? 20,000 hard core adult fans (not necessarily season ticket holders) each gave £1,000 per annum to the cause = £20 Million per annum. Then those 20,000 might have a say, but until then leave it to the experts and the people who do have the money.

Our wage bill last season was £75.9m according to an article in the Express.
25 senior players would take up the majority of that, if they average £45k a week each that would cost the club roughly £2.7m a year each once you've added Employers National Insurance and pension contributions in. 25 x £2.7m = £67.5m, then on top of that you've got exec salaries, manager, coaching staff, all other players and all other staff (office staff, match day staff etc)

'They' say that wages are the best indicator of a likely finishing position (not transfer spend) so given that our wages are the 9th highest, we underachieved last season. But we didn't need a news article to tell us that.

It also provides a good discussion of the club's strategy. Wages were just over £82 million, profit was £2 million and gross debt was just under £60 million. I would expect we used most of the £7 million allowance under financial fair play to increase our wages to close to £90 million last season and we also spent on Berahino, Allen, Ramadan and Grant so I imagine no significant improvement in profit. The other interesting thing is that our wage bill went from about 13th highest in the league to 8th highest. This will have changed as Everton and Leicester in particular have gone past us but it shows that the club has really pushed the envelope to compete, our wages to turnover ratio was third highest to show this. It also explains why there has been a change of plan and we are getting rid of senior players and hence we have to sell to buy. Looking at the finances, no-one should accuse the owners of failing to invest and support the club. It also suggests if someone wanted to buy the club, it would probably require £100 million to clear the debt and purchase the equity, which was previously debt, and then invest in players knowing that £2 million a year is the current level of profit. That's a big ask
