It's not really surprising that some St Pauli fans based outside of Hamburg are put out by an official link up with a premier league team, is it? Their whole reason for following St Pauli is the club's political ethos and ideology: doing a deal with us is always going to be seen as 'selling out', even though it appears to be a purely football-focused relationship, rather than a cultural exchange. They're only ever going to accept a link with a team that explicitly shares their values, like AS Livorno, for instance. What's disappointing (and incorrect, imo) is them painting us as a racist/sexist/homophobic etc. club. I really don't believe that Stoke supporters, on average, are any more or less unsavoury than any other British football fans- obviously that might still be more than your average St Pauli fan can stomach, but that's their cross to bear. I know it's only keyboard warriors, but the whole thing smacks of snobbery: Stoke's a provincial working-class city, so its inhabitants must all be fascist thickos, not like the virtuous internationalists who follow St Pauli. I'm interested to see what we learn from St Pauli, and German football in general, when it comes to improving fan experience and whether we'll actually see any of it put into practice at Stoke games any time soon, but I'd rather keep my football free of all that holier-than-thou sanctimony. I can see your point. There are many that support, or say they support St. Pauli online and for them they're only interested in the political aspect. However, if you were around the ground or inside yesterday you'd see that the way the club is, it has opened up to many people that you wouldn't normally see at football matches. I've had season tickets in the U.K. And Italy. I've never seen the diversity (race, gender and class) as well represented in the stadium. I'm sure that Stoke and many teams in England could learn from this. Part of the reason is the ethos and people know they will be welcomed. I'm not saying these people wouldn't be at Stoke, they're explicitly told that they want them there. Also, tickets are made available easier to people that may not access them: unemployed, refugees, and for a while prostitutes could get free tickets. On the pitch, as many have said - this wasn't the starting Stoke line up, but St. Pauli found an alarming amount of space and it shows Hughes has some work to do on the training field and in terms of recruitment.

What surprises me (in a good way) down Stoke is how many women go the game. Other than that it's a pretty much undiverse crowd but Stoke is a massively white city. And that's just down to demographics.

9 is a bit high for Wollscheid. He was a solid 7. Loses two for the daft penalty. Gains 7 for having to deal with Adam, Imbula, Souttar, Muniesa, Sweeney and Tymon. Given he's been in and around that side all Pre Season, he's done very well overall. The peno summed him up beautifully, lazy, slow and stupid. He is dog shit

Any defense with Wollscheid is going to be under pressure. That bloke would struggle to get in Newcastle Town. How is he still at our club.....oh yes of course..not one other club in the whole of Europe wants him. What are we paying him? What are we paying Imbula? What a waste of money ongoing If Wollscheid is Newcastle Town bound on that performance then Muniesa is destined for Biddulph Victoria.....

As it stands, Philipp Wollscheid is going to play a pretty big part in our season. Just let that sink in a while. Think about what we thought should happen at the end of last years dire season and what work we all thought needed to be done after the past 18 months.
How has no fucker been sacked?

Let something else sink in for a while. During Pre Season, he's performed to a similar level, if not slightly better, with less mistakes in his game than our captain - despite playing around weaker and more inexperienced players and generally in a team with a midfield of Imbula and Adam in front of him, offering no protection to the back four (or three) at all. It speaks volumes that by Christmas, our best centre half will be a loanee we have no chance of signing.

The fat complacency we're showing as a club right now is rotten and stinks the place out. Again, how has no fucker been sacked?

The strangest thing of all to me is if I remember right we had Wollscheid on a season loan with an 'option to buy' and we had Bruno on a season loan with an 'option to buy'. Now we all know what happened, we bought Wollscheid and we didn't buy Bruno. Now given that we had seen Wollscheid actually play it's seems unlikely we would have really wanted his services full time and yet some how we seemed to feel we were morally obliged to honour the 'option to buy' and we're kind of stuck with him now. Conversely Bruno was outstanding and yet somehow we failed to exercise the option. Is it safe to assume that somehow the 2 'options to buy' were drafted differently? Anything else is unthinkable.

Excellent post. All clubs have an "undesirable" contingent of fans, if some St Pauli fans want to tar all Stoke fans with the same brush it says more about their ignorance than anything they say. I also wonder what we can learn from the Germans technically, but they are a nation of excellent organizers and administrators and have the ability to get the most out of the resources available. Their number of tournament victories is evidence of that. I chaired a European committee for a number of years and the Germans were always the most organized and prepared delegation. The problem was they also wanted to organize everyone else! (and there's me with my tar brush )

Who said that Ramadan would fill Arnies shoes. Think again, he's nowhere near good enough & has got a long way to go. That 2nd division full back today was too good for him. Ramadan is a shadow of his last year performance. Now, everyone should know why Hughes criticized his performance. His head is not in the game that or he feels pressured by Arnie leaving.

Anybody got ratings 1-10 for the team tonight? Grant 7 Souttar 5 (Edwards 6) Wollscheid 9*Muniesa 5 Diouf 7 Imbula 6 Adam 5 Tymon 5 (Sweeney 6) Joselu 7 Bojan 5 (Sobhi 6) Crouch 5 Big Phil was outstanding I thought. It was like a throwback to Mexico 86 with his socks rolled down and pinging passes around the park with nonchalant ease.
