Has anybody any experience of either city? Can't decide on which one to visit for 4 days in August. Prague is a lot cheaper for much nicer accommodation, but Florence looks unbelievable!
I've not been to either, so any advice is appreciated!
Ta in advance!

Not been to Prague but me and the missus went to Florence in May. It was really worth a visit with some fantastic buildings, the Duomo, museums etc but really expensive for everything ( 2 euros to use the loo !). You'd enjoy it but be warned about how expensive it is, much dearer than Rome.

To be fair I think Chatterly Whitfield is better than Florence, for visitors anyway. Prague is full of hookers.

I think both are wonderful.
If you are going in August one 'tie breaker' decision might be that the weather in Florence in August is often suffocating hot and humid, so queuing outside for the major exhibits like the Uffizi Gallery can be quite an ordeal.
Having said that I think Prague is at it's best in winter time, walk across Charles Bridge in a flurry of snow and sit it a café in a big coat and pretend you are a deep thinker like Franz Kafka, it doesn't bet much better than that!

I'd tend to agree with Gods re. Prague. It was fantastic twenty years ago, but if you go in the summer now, especially over a weekend, there's far too many pissed up stag and hen parties. Still a superb experience in the winter. Budapest is worth a look too - not as pretty as Prague, but still plenty of interest and relatively cheap - plus you can have trips out to places like Lake Balaton. I had a month there in 1988, in a very hot summer, alternating between Budapest and Balaton.

The Amalfi Coast would be my preferred choice of summer destination over Florence as well. Have fun , wherever you end up !

Totally agree , you have to try the Ruin Bars and hang out at Gozsdu Udvar , have a plate of Goulash at the City Opera House , marvel at St Stephens Basilica , visit the Parliament building . It's a city with classic imposing stone architecture and a vibrant youth culture ...... even if Hungary is a bit right wing these days . I can't recall seeing a single black face last time I was there .

Agree with Budapest, a lovely city, we went in September time and it was mid 20's all the time, then got the train to Brno for a night and then onto Prague

It depends what you like and are after, we had some great food in Prague, the tucked away local restaurantswere great, but I do like Italian food the best I ever had was in here last year: - Ristorante Antica Trattoria Taparo Most European Cities are going to be hot and full of tourists in the summer, you werent confusing Vienna with Venice were you, Vienna has lots of parks to escape to

The food in Florence is regarded as one of the best component parts of perhaps the greatest world cuisine - Italian . I've yet to try . And sorry YES! I was confusing the two . Brain not working this morning . Vienna is great for cakes ! Venice is a hell-hole during summer .

Gozsdu Udvar and the 'ruin bars' are something else . What are the 'ruin bars', out of interest? They're like pop up bars that are set up in old neglected "ruined" buildings . Quite something and unique to Budapest I think . The health & safety guys here in the UK simply wouldn't allow it ! ruinpubs.com

I can also recommend the Gellert steam baths - huge Art Nouveau complex, indoor and outdoor pools, icy plunge pools, very hot steam rooms etc. Watch out for the Turkish masseurs though - they were brutal. It was proper old-school massage - marble slabs, foam and big bruisers with Popeye forearms.
