For the first time in 23 years a local club is in the top flight. The attention of media from around the world is suddenly focussed on Stoke on Trent. On a regular basis images of Staffordshire will be beamed around the globe.
What would you do so that this publicity benefits the city and its people?
Is it going to be an opportunity to boost the visitors at Trentham gardens and Monkey Island or will there be a genuine push to draw investment to the region?
Can we use the collective conscious of the Oatcake to offer a few ideas?

I no longer live in Stoke so I am not best qualified to advise him on what to do to promote the attractions of the area. But as an exiled fan I do have an interest in getting to and from the ground efficently and hassle free so, if I were the Mayor, I'd already be holding talks with the club and other authorities with the following agenda:
1. How can we improve the road, rail and pedestrian links to and from the ground.
2. What can we do to facilitate good park and ride schemes and hopefully park and rail schemes to put less pressure on the car parks.
3. What businesses can we encourage into the area around the Brit to enhance the matchday experience for home and away fans. Car sales rooms are fine but there should be some variety and some of it should be matchday related.
4. How can we find the money in THIS year's Council budget for the underpass behind the Seddon Stand?

Some very good points there Forny.
The underpass really needs to be started now.
I like the idea of the park/ride train/ride schemes to ease conjestion.
Maybe the supporters club could also help to build relationships with other teams by organising 5 a side comps at the Power League/ Academy.
I'm sure that any away fans wanting overnight stays will be impressed with the surroundings at the new Premier Inn at Trentham Gardens. Also the Holiday Inn next to the ground must be delighted with our promotion as they will probably be full most home games.
As for other activities - It would be nice to think that some sort of fan zones could be created, large marquees with bottle bars but I guess it would depend on the potential for trouble ???
It would be great to think that Stoke can do all they can to make the experience of visiting the Brit a very positive one and we all have a part to play to ensuring that happens.

What about a station at the Brit, down near where that big bridge is?
Or would that just cost too much?

Is now really the time to be thinking of doing something? Maybe one or two years ago is the time that things ought to have been done and probably further back than that. It's ok us having Renew demolishing properties left, right and centre but until inward investment is found then the area will never succesfully compete in terms of higher paid jobs and skilled workforce retention. Anyone with any real knowledge tends to find a job in Manchester, Birmingham or the like. I agree, Stoke being in the Premiership (and I still smile every time I think about it) can be the catalyst for our city but there should have been other things put in place to complement this.

Stoke being in the Premiership (and I still smile every time I think about it) can be the catalyst for our city but there should have been other things put in place to complement this. I think that with a few consistent Premiership seasons the infrastructure for the ground will naturally come - car parks, underpasses, new stands. Maybe the City needs to focus on what makes it special and different and use these features as draw cards. We will regularly have between 2000 and 5000 away fans visiting the area. Maybe we should start trying to encourage these football supporters to bring family members with them to enjoy other facilities in the area. If we play in Manchester, Birmingham, London how many Stokies take their families along for a day out in these Cities? We may not have the West End or the Arndale Centre but we have wonderful countryside, proximity to Alton Towers and Mow Cop. With the TV cameras coming to town lets hope that somebody takes the initiative and shows them that theres more to the Potteries than Hooligans, Heroin and the BNP.

The first thing I would do is jump on the bang wagon claiming that I used to stand in the Boothen End over many years and that I am Stokie born and bred.
Oh hang on our Mayors already beat me to that ;D

And people go on about being realistic about transfers??
A friggin train staion,Shopping weekends,park'n'ride.
Ask Derby how much improvment there was in their local economy?? None, they acutally lost jobs in the 10 months they were there.
So lets just enjoy the moment for what it is.

Maybe if they had the foresight to have a retail area around the ground instead of car sales and industrial units the impression of the stadium may of been a little brighter. I suppose they could push the boat out and have a mini train like they used to have at butlins to ferry people from Trentham Village?

If I was him, I'd hire more traffic wardens. The extra spondulicks he'll get from parking fines will regenerate the Cultural Quarter. OS.

If I got the reception that the Mayor was given at the Brit on the Tuesday night then I would do fuck-all for Stoke City FC, the city of Stoke-on-Trent might be a different proposition though ?? Cheers Adie

Selling Oatcakes in the ground would offer a variation to the normal, monotonous crap that is served up and down the country in every ground.

promotion will bring one thing......publicity we have been off the radar for far too long, and smaller or similar size cities have over taken us EG how any people realise Newcastle upon Tyne is about the same size as Stoke on trent

Maybe not a die-hard 100% every single game fan, but how many of those do we have any way? His father also fought for the British Army in the 2nd World War and was taken prisoner by the Japanese at Singapore!

Perhaps it's time to lift the city into the premiership with some real investment. Good opportunity to shine for the international community now the team's in the premiership.

I'd imagine there'd be an intangible effect on the city as a result of the club's promotion. The outside perception of an area is affected by the perception of the prosperity of its football club.
If the club has a renaissance, then the general perception of the area is that it mus be having a mini-revival to support such success.
If you look at the decline of the mills in Preston or Bolton, the decline of the British seaside holiday in Blackpool, the decline of shipbuilding in Teeside or Wearside etc. then their slump was mirrored by that of their football clubs. But in recent years each has either built a new stadium or tasted Premiership success, and now the outside perception of those places are more likely to be of as place to invest, rather than somewhere stagnating.
If I was the mayor I'd be focussing the image of Stoke as a place to do business around Trentham lakes, which just so happens to have a Premiership football ground slap bang in the middle of it and great transport links.
Success = image = investment = more success.
