And we have no idea how much the club are paying him, it could be £5 a week for all we know just so he can keep getting medical assistance Well done to my club for looking after him I say £5 a week would be below the national living wage. We could get in trouble for only paying this. I imagine they would have to keep him on the books to keep him on the clubs health insurance policy. Otherwise, he might have to switch other doctors and specialists that are treating him now. His salary could be very nominal.

I think it's a great gesture and puts Stoke City in a positive light to other potential players. We did the same for Rory and Wilko, what's the problem ? Well done Stoke... now go and sign somebody !

i cannot be arsed to read all the posts on this thread but what is quite clear is that the majority of our internet based supporters are clueless both in football and life in general. i am proud to be a s/t holder at a club that runs itself in a decent manner. this is a very simple gesture from the club that has huge pr advantage for us and costs very little.

Moaning for the sake of it. If we booted him out they'd be moaning. How about it makes us look a good club and makes us 0.1percent attractive to other players for negligible outlay. Or shows existing players we are a good club? Or shock of shocks we just want to do the right thing. Do you want us to be like cunty Newcastle who got rid of a cancer suffererer? Not forgetting that a 6 month contract allows him to be in the squad and for him to be sold for a fee if we desire. All good business for very little return. Not really, if anyone wanted him im sure they'd just wait or we'd just let him go.

I'm sure it's negligible compared to status, wages and other things. You can't possibly be 'sure' of that. Players might think differently to you. Yeah they'd think way more about £££££

Not sure why this is being frowned on by some... he won't take a squad place and it's not your fucking money, so what does it matter?

I detest what supporters of my club have started to become It's the club looking after him whilst he gets himself fit , no more no less Why should we though? It's part and parcel of the game. If it was a kid just starting then it's honourable or like Delap when you've agreed to sign them. But what loyalty do we owe him? Loyalty in football seems a one way street. Fuck that! That's the attitude that will mean there is less and less loyalty, why not stand of a different approach? I have met the owners and management and there is no doubt they care about the city and club in a way few other clubs do. That's why we have an academy larger than we need because the club want to give talented kids in the city the best possible chance to play professionally somewhere. Decisions to look after players may tip the balance with the odd signing but more importantly will build our brand in the youth market with parents and coaches. Its a well thought out strategy that is clearly beyond your capability to understand

Cheap wages till he gets over his injury and release in January. Whats the problem in that? I like to think we look after our own , particularly when they're injured ..... Rory , Wilko etc .

Wilko was a loyal, local lad, a one club player who helped us gain promotion after 23 years. Stephen Ireland is a multi millionaire who joined the band of mercenaries at Man City and has benefitted from his cut of a couple of lucrative transfers. He has been well remunerated by the club for the last 14 months. His loyalty extends to lying to his country whilst claiming to bury fictitious grannies. The club don't owe Ireland a penny. He will only go and spend it on a tacky pink Ranger Rover, an oversized fish tank or a spending spree at Toys r us. Meanwhile our transfer kitty extends to a couple of pensioners and untried kids. You may be right about Ireland's spending habits but you are mistaken about his early career. He joined Man City at 18, well before the arab takeover and the era of Man City mercenaries.

After some reflection....yes it seems like a waste of budget.
But we're a decent club run by decent people.
Good move.

You clearly have no idea of the philosophy the club adopts. something confirmed by your assertion that we have to have Bruno signed by Wednesday, of course why would the club worry about trying to do a commercial deal, just spend the money.

Don't clubs insure their playing assets? In which case his wages will be covered by the insurance won't they?

It isn't just about S Ireland. If we don't support an injured player, it might make future players think twice about signing for a club with such a poor personnel policy.
