Word gets round about the way players are treated by clubs. From the Rory Delap injury through to Sidibe and Wilko and now this, I think it paints the club in a really positive light. Correct This isn't just sentiment it's good PR within football. Treat players in the right manner and you reap rewards.

Nostalgia is not what it was.

I have more of a problem recalling anything he's ever input to our cause, than us giving him a 'right thing to do' extension.
Being a footballer is a piece of piss these days. You don't even have to do anything 'on the pitch' any more.

Decent gesture from Stoke in my opinion... Giving him enough time for rehabilitation and hopefully he'll find himself something decent out there!!!

Starting to realy hate these4 numbnuts, not one grain of post is deserving of them, stick them in a bucket and pour water over them, just like baby rats You seem to have a problem with Stoke fans. Perhaps you should fuck off and stop posting on a forum used by Stoke fans then. Prick. I think it's just the ones that constantly moan and groan about everything to do with the club. Literally fucking everything....

His career is over and he is worth millions. I have no sympathy whatsoever.
Absolutely no need of a contract extension. As someone has said he cant even be part of the 25 man squad.

So a player gets invalided out of the game through an injury while playing or us and you all think the best thing to do is just boot him out of the club at the first opportunity, regardless of the condition he has been left in. ....Nice people. Do you not think footballers have insurance against this sort of thing? If I'm for any reason unable to work - injury, illness, accident etc - then I have insurance that takes care of it. L

Injuries are a horrible part of the game. In addition to an obvious detrimental effect on a players physical health, it can damage mental health and cause wide ranging problems across various aspects of life.
He might be wealthy but surely some things transcend money.
I am pleased our club has taken a significant step to support one of our players.

The club have done this on a few occasions now, it's become common practice. As stated above we have no idea of the wages involved so why get so wound up. We're obviously trying to garner a reputation for looking after our players and I can't see how that's any bad thing.
From a personal point of view, after all the talk of him getting a new deal, I find this news a big relief as I was worried he'd be given a proper contract extension.

This is not only the right thing to do from a moral perspective, it's also good PR because it sends a message to other players and potential signees that Stoke is a team that stands by its employees. I'd be curious to know how much of his salary and treatment is covered by insurance.

And we have no idea how much the club are paying him, it could be £5 a week for all we know just so he can keep getting medical assistance Well done to my club for looking after him I say £5 a week would be below the national living wage. We could get in trouble for only paying this.

Wilko was a loyal, local lad, a one club player who helped us gain promotion after 23 years. Stephen Ireland is a multi millionaire who joined the band of mercenaries at Man City and has benefitted from his cut of a couple of lucrative transfers. He has been well remunerated by the club for the last 14 months. His loyalty extends to lying to his country whilst claiming to bury fictitious grannies. The club don't owe Ireland a penny. He will only go and spend it on a tacky pink Ranger Rover, an oversized fish tank or a spending spree at Toys r us. Meanwhile our transfer kitty extends to a couple of pensioners and untried kids. I would suggest you read up on how the granny thing happened and then draw your own conclusions as to who was out of order: Stephen Ireland or the officials at the Irish FA.

This is the type of move a proper football club makes, and with Wilko and Sidibe it shows that we look after our own. I really like that.
True, today's players are minted, but it's still an act that shows and hopefully breeds loyalty. I'd also like to think that our heroes of yesteryear, before Sky's millions made average footballers millionaires, would be offered support when they hit hard times or illness or both. I hope they do, because it's likely they need it much more.
