My neighbor has just come back from Derbyshire & she kindly brought me back what I thought was a dozen of their oatcakes. There was only half dozen, But they were so thick it seemed like more. I've just done'em with bacon & cheese for the wife & kids. They were rubbery & insipid. Derby should stick to what they know best. Sheep $#@&&!n 🐏

We stayed in a b&b near Bakewell and I was delighted to see oatcakes on the breakfast menu. They were Derbyshire oatcakes and disgraceful to the beautiful name.
I still ate them though.

Derbyshire 'oatcakes' are shite. Scottish 'oatcakes' are biscuits. There is only one true oatcake and that comes from the Potteries. Not Newcastle. Not Leek. The Potteries! Anything else is anathema.

I live in Derbyshire and oatcakes out here are disgusting. They fry them out here, even more vile. Staffordshire oatcakes are so so much better, in-laws bring me some fresh each time they visit.

I've just seen the dirty b@$t@&d who makes these monstrosities on the telly. He was on Nadyer's Peak District addition of British foods on BBC 2 catch up, 6:30 mins into the program. Him & his mother banging out the fat insipid things. When asked if anyone else makes them, he said nobody else in Derbyshire makes them(thank £@#&) Not a mention of the superior version over the border made by an army of aficionados

From anywhere round here. Leek, Stoke, Hanley, Kidsgrove, Tunstall, Sneyd Green, anywhere local really.
Yes they vary a bit but all taste good rolled up with cheese and draped with a healthy dollop of tinned tomatoes.
I've lead a very sheltered oatcake life. Always cheese and tomato. But I'm happy with that.
I did once have a "Bellybuster" oatcake from my local shop which featured cheese, egg, bacon, beans, and sausage and it was more than I could take.
Am I normal or do I need help?
Where is the best oatcake shop? I'll go get some pronto!

Oatcakes are obviously a very subjective subject. I think my favourites of all time were from a stall on Tunstall market {the name escapes me}. But I think it was as much to do with the mode of delivery. Sunday morning, communal smoky bacon, melted cheese, tomato {and dip}, and a steaming stack of a dozen warmed up oatcakes there, ready to build yer own. Moved on to Hamil Road, and then Cornhill in Norton. I prefer them thinner and darker than the average moorland oatcake and always preferably odd-shaped/hand poured with the scorch of a Baxton on 'em. Currently Station Kitchen, Endon are top of my particular chart. More than fit the spec, and walkable to too. They do a self mix which is interesting.

Been freezing em for years mate, taste fine, can 'split' if you don't eat em within a couple of days of defrosting tho. Beverly Drive Bentilee are the best I've had, folk that run it are right miserable buggers tho.

London Road Oatcakes in Stoke, 50yds from The Commercial. Beautifully thin and textured. They have the proper Oatcake taste that I remember as a sprat....and good enough to eat on their own - the true test proof a decent oatcake.
