Well it wasn't hard to see this one coming , so presumably we need another forward probably two unless we are prepared to bet £100 million on a bloke who hadn't scored for 2 years during which time he served a drug ban . Be great to see him come good but that's a hell of a risk .

Truly ungrateful some of you lot.... Why not wish him the best in pastures new and thank him wholeheartedly for the 110% he has given us every time he wore the shirt. Technically not the best, but his attitude was never a question. Best of luck Jon, you will get a round of applause from me whenever we meet again. Like holding the club to ransom and throwing his dummy out when he's been incredibly fortunate to have the career he's had thanks to us? Sorry, not buying the sentimentality for Walters, N'Zonzi did similar and was vilified for it, and he's 5 times the player Walters ever was. He dined out on a purple patch he had in 2010, where I'll admit he was brilliant, but since then he's been gradually more painful to watch, iffy touches, shocking passing, missing sitters, spending pretty much the whole game being caught offside and not forgetting, scoring two own goals and missing a penalty in the same game, if that was anyone else they'd be absolutely rinsed for it, but because it was "100% commitment" Jon it was fine, we rescued him from the doldrums of Ipswich, who really were shit when we bought him, and have given him a very respectable top flight career, he's responded by seemingly getting more bitter the longer his stay here has gone on, demanding new contracts and more playing time, despite being in his 30's and very visibly on the wane. As I said previously he should have left the club two years ago, maybe then he'd have been deserving of a bit more sentimentality but not now in my eyes.

In today's print edition of the Daily Telegraph: "Jonathan Walters is set to leave Stoke after the club opted against offering him a new contract. ROI international Walters....will push for a move to end his seven year association. Burnley and Newcastle are interested in the 33 year old who has 12 months remaining on his current deal." Apols if this has already been posted. Cant be a true story west brom aren't being linked with him

those people insulting our players, players that have given their best for to the club (no matter how good their best is) don't deserve the right to be called supporters
it really is an insult to the player and the club

Why exactly do people think he's not entitled to ask for a new contract? What sort of player would allow himself and the agent who represents him not to enter any negotiations when he only has 12 months left on his deal?
Whether people think the club SHOULD offer him a new contract is irrelevant, the fact is he's more than entitled to try and get one. He is our all-time Premier League top goalscorer and has given us seven years of fantastic service, personally I hope he stays longer but if he does leave this summer he should be remembered as one of the best signings this club has made in the modern era.

To be fair I don't think many would argue that they'd rather keep Walters and Whelan than Johnson and Bardsley. As the better set of full backs, I assume

Been a very good servant for us, but now we need to upgrade and let him go. I really can't see him staying unless he is promised more game time, and I can't see this happening either.

If true, I am sad to see him go. Fantastic servant, He always gave 110% and made the most of his modest ability in a Stoke shirt and has given us some fantastic memories (FA Cup run first season, Europe, single handedly destroying the bin-dippers on boxing day, scoring the winner against the Arse at least twice, QPR hat-trick etc.). I suppose it makes sense from a financial point of view - it frees up wages and a squad place, gives us a few more quid to play with and if he stays on, he either goes as a free agent at the end of next season or he is contracted with little to zero resale value.
Either way, we should be shifting Ireland, Johnson, Charlie, Wolly and Imbula before we even consider getting rid of Jon. Or Whelan for that matter - two honest pros that would sweat blood for our club.

He'll go with my best wishes, but we need to move on. My main worry is that we don't move on, and in 6 months wish we'd have kept him.
That said, if I were him, I'd wank myself daft at every given opportunity, given the career Jon's ended up with, based upon his limited ability, and a CV that prior to here, read 'bog-average journeyman'.
All the best if you do go, Jon.

Ok I get it that Walters isn't the most skilful player but he does have value and chips in goals. People defend Berahino (and other strikers) saying that he is not getting the service to score goals.
Is Walters getting a different class of service?
He has been great for Stoke
