Can't remember if it's two or three years left on his contract.

What worries me is his apparent complacency over issues such as fitness, team shape , set plays . These are the things that make all the difference in the league today. Coaches like Conte take this to a new level and feels to me that the Hughes methods are getting left behind . The other issue is the crowd relationship, that was pretty poor at the end if last season , games felt like a chore . He needs to address that and produce a fighting start to the season despite the tough fixtures. Any more tame surrenders like those we have seen over the past 18 months and I fear the crowd will turn and then Coates may have to act to prevent a slide into the championship

Yes, one exception to that scenario would be if we kept playing really exciting football but kept losing out to the odd goal or bad luck. I'd cut some slack for that. But as you say - the relationship with the crowd will show that.

When the crowd turn against him (not just a few on here pooing their pants) That's when Coates will weild the axe.

He's got as long as he continues to do well. Last season was disappointing - but far from the disaster some are making out,
If we are in a relegation battle come Xmas (which I don't think we will) he'll be gone come the new year. If we don't end up in the top half (which could happen) he may go at the end of the season.
The manager is being used as a scapegoat for the reality of a club of our size. Its a tough league and we are having to punch above our weight to stay in it - let alone do well. That reality will remain regardless of who the manager is.
The people baying for Hughes's blood are the same people as will be baying for the next manager's blood ..and the next and the next.. at the first sign of us no longer over achieving, Eventually we will appoint a genuine duffer (and anyone who thinks Hughes is a genuine duffer really is an idiot) and we will get relegated and (very possibly) never get back into the Premier league again. The irony is that if that were to happen Hughes's record would probably make him one (if not the) best managers in the clubs history. And, yes son, some of our fans did try to hound him out.

I agree with you trouble is he doesn't put out a team for the type of club you describe . That's a problem . We have become a bit of a soft touch and he needs to address that urgently
