Allen and Delph would create a more mobile midfield, with Fletch to sit in and organise. Not sexy Stokealona, but an improvement on the static and ponderous midfield showings we have witnessed many times these past 18 months. Central midfield has been a notable weakness in our recent poor form, so two new central midfielders are to be welcomed. Get the right type of full backs, finally sign Bruno and we could be in decent shape for the new season. Like it or not that assumes a forward who hasn't scored for two, years is going to turn back time or Hughes is going to change his mind and give Diouf a proper chance up front

Allen, Arnie and Shaq will have to chip in with 7-8 each if goals are not to be thin on the ground.

The frustrating thing is having 2 very good attacking fullbacks with a midfield of Fletcher, Allen and Delph would be just fine regarding the issue of creativity as having 2 effective fullbacks in the final 3rd would give Arnie and Shaq the licence to roam closer to the striker without feeling the need, Arnie in particular, to stay wide because Erik is useless at crossing a ball. The frustration is down to the obvious fact we aren't going to sign a RB which means a new LB is essential in terms of making this system work.

Agreed - stick Walker and Rose type full backs into that formation and it would work just fine. Expect Erik and Johnson to do it and.....not so much!

It baffles me that a once great footballer and now pretty reputable manager cannot recognise that Johnson is finished at this level and Erik is meant to keep the ball in play when crossing a ball instead of aiming for Dave in row 5.

Maybe Hughes is thinking of a 4-3-3, or a 4-3-2-1, with Delph (he's left-footed), Fletcher and Allen as the midfield three.

Maybe Hughes is thinking of a 4-3-3, or a 4-3-2-1, with Delph (he's left-footed), Fletcher and Allen as the midfield three. I think, if we buy Fabian Delph, this could very much be his intention. It would make us more mobile in there, and probably harder for the opposition to waltz through and blast 4 past us on such a regular basis, but may limit further our already somewhat limited creation of goalscoring opportunities. As I said above, the front three would have to play out of their skins week in week out.

would spell the end of a number ten for us. I fear the end of any attacking threat from the centre of midfield. If one of Fletcher/Delph/Allen isn't a first choice midfielder then maybe it'd work. But one has to miss out to get a proper number ten in. I think it's even worse than that mate. Not only would it spell the end of a number 10 in our formation, it would also mean that we wouldn't have a bona fide DCM either. Essentially Fletcher, Allen and Delph all play in exactly the same position and ideally they should each be partnered with a creative number 10 and a proper DCM in order to create a genuinely balanced midfield. It just smacks of more puddled thinking but (sadly) it's not at all surprising anymore.

You don't need someone to just sit there with those two, they both cover a lot of ground and both have showed enough defensive discipline for club and country to fulfill the defensive criteria you need. Not muddled at, natural pairing for me in a 4231.

I'd be all for this one. Presumably it would mean him, Fletcher and Allen rotating in the 2 midfield positions or it could mean we're looking at 4-3-3.          Butland New RB Shawcross Bruno New LB     Delph Fletcher Allen    Shaqiri Berahino Arnie I could go for that. No Stokie kiddie at rb and no Sobhi, ohhhh my Buddha, how dare u not play kids

I posted earlier that with Delph injury record,Fletcher's age and some squad rotation, with some games where all three play over the season no issue at all with all three competing for two spots (sometimes three). Clearly would mean,as touted, Whelan and Adam to leave for sure.

Rather than one player always sits and the other never defends. To make it work you would need two mobile players with good stamina, good understanding of game play and good all round ability. I think that describes both players to a tee. Added bonus with Delph being left footed, natural balance with right footed Allen.

I only think it describes Delph tbh, I see Allen as too much of a headless chicken, where would it leave Fletcher though, he's pretty much guaranteed to start, I'd be non fussed to see Allen sold, he just hasn't worked.

How long for this bloke to get fit? Can we withhold our fee until he gets through 3 consequentive 90 minute spells? We've had him for two seasons, I like him but the guy's never fit!

In this market it is actually fair and if Stoke aren't prepared to spend £12m to solve a significant problem - well then it's Championship for us. This is big boys league now. Time to step up.
