The Shtaniuk thread got me thinking about the centre backs I've seen down at Stoke over the years and I've been lucky enough to see a few. A tough task, but who are your 3 best and 3 worst?
Best:
Denis Smith Alan Dodd Ryan Shawcross
Shtaniuk was a personal favourite but it was lower league.
Worst:
Paul Williams John Clark Steven Tweed.

Abdoulaye Faye was absolutely immense. That first season in the Prem, he was as good a centre half I've ever seen.
Imperious.

Larus Sigurdsson was a decent defender who rarely gets a mention.

And big Vince Overson, what a bargain he was. Him and Cranson were an immense pairing.

Abdoulaye was a one man machine and Bruno is champions league quality. Truth hurts, especially when it comes to captain untouchable.

For Stoke or ever in football??? Ever. He was very good for a side trying to avoid relegation from the premier league, in fact he was superb for us but as good as any centre half you've ever seen? If you mean live and are about 15 years old I might be able to believe you

Smith George Berry Alan Dodd
George Berry Big Bren (as a centre half) George Berry again (Who was the best centre half in the world on his day but played like a blind grandma on his worst)

Shawcross - Between 2007 and 2014 he was absolutely impervious for this club. Struggled a bit since his back surgery, but also a victim of our less defensive approach.
Taggart: Turned us from relegation no hopers to a solid championship outfit, will forever be a hero for throttling Dennis Wise.
08/09 Abdoulaye Faye: Cruyff turns in his own corner? Check. Leader of men? Check. Chipped in with the odd goal? Check. Nicest bloke ever? Check. Still think his impact in that season is nowhere near as lauded as it should be.

There are some good centre halves mentioned in this thread, but not many of them are fit to lace Ryan Shawcross's boots.

Good
Shawcy Smithy Bouldo
Then I remember Cranny and Vinny. And of course Dave Watson and Faye. Too hard to choose.
One thing of which I am 100% confident is my favourite and the best is Shawcy. Nobody can question what Bould did but it was mainly for another team really. For nearly a decade Shawcy served with distinction, for much of it led with honour and by example.

Clubs tend to have a position where they've had players who've excelled, like Man Utd and their numer 7s or Newcastle and their centre forwards. For me, Stoke's position of note is our centre halves, from Neil Franklin through to Ryan.
I could choose three today, then choose a totally different three tomorrow and the day after without any great drop in quality. But for now, pissed as I am, I'll go for:
Vinnie Overson Ryan Shawcross Dave Watson
I could just as easily have gone for:
Laurus Abdoulaye Doddy Cranny Bouldy Smithy Sergei Huth Taggart Bluto
with apologies to a shedload more that I've probably missed.
I've already had to edit my top three because I'd forgotten about the awesome Dave Watson until I saw Joe's post. Soz Laurus.
