Jimmy Greenhoff tops the list for me and especially at £100k (he would get that a week these days). Also Steve Bould and Peter Beagrie.

As a younger fan, Fuller. He definitely wasn't what he used to be but it was always going to be sad to see the man go.

Never quite got over Thorne leaving.
Was sad when Hoekstra no longer wore the red and white too.

Mark Stein, John Eustace, Peter Hoekstra, Sergei Shtanuk and Micheal Hansson.
I'd had time to get used to Fuller leaving and knew his time was up, through no fault of his own, long before it was.

Jimmy Greenhoff, I was absolutely shattered and could not believe that he had gone. I was at Old Trafford when he was given the United player of the year award, the Stokies were shouting his name louder than the shit fans. Just an aside I think we lost 4-0 and Neil Webb scored a couple. JIMMY GREENHOFF was a god.

Greenhoff was my first experience of a loved player leaving. In my time supporting the club I don't think any sale has come close to being met with the same level of horror from the fans.
Losing Lou and Steino in the same week was also a massive shitter. It was the end of something really special.

Too young to really understand the tragedy that was Jimmy G and Huddy leaving, but Chambo, Steino, Sheron, Thorne and Kavanagh were big losses at the time.
The one not mentioned yet was Pesch being sold as we were pushing for promotion - totally illogical and gutting at the time.

There have been better players out there for us, but I was gutted about fuller leaving. His petulance, flashes of brilliance and stupidity always got my interest. Wish we had a fuller mk2, a fuller in this team would be incredible.
This thread is too much to take...

Greenhoff leaving was terrible to come to terms with. As a young lad I had dreamed of him playing for Stoke, and then unbelievably we actually signed him. When he left and went to Manure it was very hard to accept for a very long time afterwards. Hudson was another who me and my mates worshipped at Stoke and the feeling was almost as bad as when Greenhoff left.
