Aren't all hairdressers called Sharon? ... and men's hairstylists called Lee or Gavin?

You have to be of an age but I distinctly remember, as a young boy, crying when Calvin Palmer was transferred. I remember Calvin talking to the Boothen End crowd after the match immediately following his transfer wishing Stoke well and "hoping they come 2nd in the league next season". Saddest about leaving: has to be Jimmy Greenhoff. He was the heart and soul of the club at that time. Waddington said later it was the worst thing he had to do as a manager at the Board's insistence that he raise money. Docherty wanted to buy Shilton as well but the ManU Board wouldn't agree to spending so much on a GK.

If there had been an Oatcake Forum back in them days - not a single Stokie would ever had said Greenhoff was dog shite!!!!! Even if he hadn't scored in three games!!

Bojan.
Whenever he leaves that's it for football for me, I'll have to find something else to do.

Without doubt Jimmy Greenhoff, I moved to Lichfield in 64 so my mates at school were a lot of Brummie who were relocated to Lichfield in the early 60s known friendly as the overspill, regular rail service to Brum (3 per hour) and still is so used to go to Blues & Villa games with mates regular and 1st spotted Jimmy at the Blues partnering Freddie Pickering, rumour had it they had massive personal issues with one another that's how we scooped him for a bargain price.

Greenhoff. Remember the next game after we sold him against West Brom at The Vic with less than 15,000 it was like a wake. It was the start of the break up of Waddos 1973/74 74/75 League challenging team and resulted eventually in us being relegated a few seasons later. Everyone that day new the party was over.

Pesch, Thorne were the main ones for me when sold.
But also Hoekstra when he left, had a couple of tears when he was giving his farewell speech (just a pity that with the shit tannoy system, nobody could tell what he was saying!)

Greenhoff and Hudson, for all the reasons people have said. Also, Pejic as the final part of the good 1970s side. It really was all over when he went.

Crooks to Spurs, then Inchy to Everton 😢 Later on, it's always gut wrenching to see your better players go (Chambo, Beagrie, Ric, Kav, Thorne etc), but Bojan going out on loan was a sad day, as it felt like it could signify something different. The end of a mini era

Both Thorne and Kav although the Kav one really hurt. He was just about my favorite player as a kid and was one of the few I actually didn't meet from that squad. Also the way he left with all the controversy.... Just makes me sad thinking about it.
In more recent times, definitely Fuller. There felt like unfinished business and Tone decided to just fuck him off.

Many agreeing with my original thread comments about Greenhoff. But read this, he didn't need to be sold. When the roof fell in (literally) 41 years ago the repair bill was £250k. A third was covered by the insurance, so the club had to find £170k. They sold Haselgrave to Forest for £35k, Moores to Spurs for £75k, Hudson to Arsenal for £200k and Greenhoff to United for £100k. Pegic left later for £140k. Total proceeds £550k. They only needed to raise £170k!! And we were relegated with the club showing a profit of almost £500k for the season. I am still angry about it all.

Jimmy Greenhoff Paul Bracewell Adrian Heath Lee ChapmanMark Stein Mike Sheron Paul Peschisolido gutted when all these went - most of all though, Jimmy G - (think I cried that day) In his autobiography Lee writes that he made a mistake leaving Stoke. He left because he felt the club lacked ambition and he wanted to improve his chances of winning something, but moving to Arsenal was a mistake he regrets. I wonder if Begovic feels the same and wishes he had waited a bit longer for a better option? N'Zonzi did the right thing in a way going to Sevilla, but he still can't get in the France team.

Toddy - I sent the club a fax pleading for them to keep my favourite player. Tbf Lou sent me back a nice letter saying it was a good deal for the club and toddy wanted to go. I was 8 and sad.
