I would have to drop Berahino I am afraid. When we signed him I was delighted and thought he would be the answer (and I hope he still will be) but as the weeks go by you can see that he is not the palyer that burst onto the scene with WBA a few years back, he is not really pacey, pretty poor in the air and doesn't link up that well in my opinion, and of course his confidence is shot, those 2 misses on Saturday plus the needless push in the back on their defender when the ball was going out for a corner means he needs to be taken out of the firing line. For me we need to bench him and blood a youngster such as Campbell or N'Goy and see how hey fair as they cannot be any worse. Also Pieters needs dropping as his form is more Conference Premier that Premier. Finally what has happned with Affelay??? Butland Bardsley Shawcross Indi Muni Allen Cameron Ramadan Shaqiri Arnie N'Goy Bench- Walters, Johnson, Diouf, Edwards, Grant, Adam, Verlinden Lets mix it up a bit and see what happens Bloody hell, you don't even know Afellay is injured, you'd chuck the injured N'Goy straight in up front on his own and Verlinden has only just started training again (I think) after his lengthy injury.

Please note that the players not in the team Saturday will do a better job than the ones selected.

Difficult team selection for several reasons.
1. We're out of form, down on confidence and not really flowing 2. We haven't got a settled formation 3. Psychologically, certain players (Butland and Berahino) might be deflated if they were now dropped.
I think he might play:
Butland
Johnson Shawcross Martins Indi Pieters
Cameron Allen
Shaqiri Walters Arnatovic
Berahino
Walters adds a physical presence and a partner for Saido who is getting into more goal scoring positions. He's also in decent form. If those attacking 3 can be fluid and interchange a bit, it's less of a rigid 4-4-2, more of a fluid 4-2-3-1/4-4-1-1.
However, if Grant, Bardsley or Muniesa played, I don't think we would be any weaker.
Let's hope we can have a positive performance.

Why do people keep butting Edwards in, like Hughes will drop Johnson when hes just signed him up again? he will revert back to whelen etc. as he aims to scrape a win to protect his job. People resented Pulis for his lack of trust in young players, now hes playing that 18 year old Leko most weeks... He's not started a game and played a total of 99 minutes with 22 appearances on the bench. Not knocking it but he's hardly thrown in him at the deep end..... He also started a game last season, not thrown in at the deep end but still, obviously willing to play young players. Didnt he bring on an 18 year old cm late on against us at the hawthorns i seem to remember.

Fuck em, chuck them in even if they are injured gotta be better than the garbage on offer Saturday................I know I am useless, was unaware on all those 3 points
My main point was actually Berahino needs to "hit the training ground" and take a break from 1st team action

Can't wait for the 'surprise' selections he alluded to!!. I thought the bench on Saturday was very uninspiring. For a club supposedly on the up it was very weak and summed up where we at as a club.

The main issue for me is how easy it is to cut through our midfield. Has been our biggest problem for weeks, since we used the 442. West Ham (like Leicester and Swansea) are a poor side, and we shouldn't be resorting to a midfield cage and Walters/Crouch up front.
For me:
Butland Johnson Shawcross BMI Pieters Allen Cameron Imbula/Muniesa Shaqiri Berahino Arnautovic
Anything to get extra bodies in the middle, if we play Imbula leave Allen and Cameron playing deeper. At least Imbula may drive through their midfield a little, save us having to punt it upfield. If Muniesa then leave him and Cameron deeper, unfortunately we have to let Joe be the creative one, but at least we'd be more solid. Such a shame we don't have a number 10, because i think Allen and Cameron as defensive midfielders would suit the 4231 perfectly.

I think I'd go three in midfield myself, with Cameron, Adam and Allen, possibly bringing on Whelan if we need to stiffen things up. God knows whether we stick Adam further forward or Allen, I've no bloody idea, just that we need more resolve in the middle of the park. If Afellay was available he'd be in like a shot. I'd then play Diouf with Arnie and Shaq either side. I don't think this will happen and fully expect Walters to be in contention to play alongside Berahino, but at least we might see some more verve. All this notwithstanding the fact that Pieters is in a complete black hole of form with Muniesa as the only option.

Seeing as you are picking holes in everyone's selections, do you really want Adam to start? Really? I can see sense in the idea of three in the middle to solidify things, but I am at the end of my tether with both Whelan and Adam. I would suggest Imbula, but we all know his time at Stoke is done, so there is no point even offering him as an alternative. For me, we may as well look to attack as our defending is so poor, so I'd just have Geoff and Joe in the middle, have Arnie, Shaq and Ramadan ahead of them and Diouf up top (to use his pace and work rate, and rest Berahino for now). As you say, Muniesa has to play at left back, he really does.

Therefore, it was the lesser of two evils....Cameron and Allen with Charlie in there to add some creativity and Whelan in reserve. Our midfield options are that limited. I think Imbula's confidence is shot and we're keeping him safe in order to (probably) loan or sell him. We may well be surprised though and see both him and Bony make an appearance

You can't ignore the fact that Edwards is 18 and he isn't next in line after Johnson. Bardsley would get the nod first.

Edwards being 18 isn't really an issue is it. How many clubs play their young guys, how old do you suggest them to be before letting them play? Do you know Edwards won't perform? Wouldn't get man of the match? Just because he's 18 means nowt. Johnson has long had his day, Bardsley looks like he's heading out with Johnson signing again, we need something different trying.
Pieters confidence is shot, needs dropping / replacing, Cameron has energy and can mark, can't pass, Muniesa can pass, can shoot / score so alongside Allen you have two players that can keep hold of the ball or pick a pass.

But Edwards won't play will he? A young defender in a Premiership debut is liable to be more exposed than, say, a winger or striker. The latter two you can bring on later in the game but a new full back is rarely a tactical move so they usually start. Let's agree to disagree. There's nothing to suggest Edwards is close to starting a game for the First Team, 18 or not. Out of interest, have you seen him play?

The midfield two should be Cameron and Muniesa or failing that Cameron and Whelan. Allen is not disciplined enough for a holding midfield position. Whelan is now unfortunately past his best but is the best option we have. That says more about the other midfielders than it does about Whelan. Keep Berahino up front and play Allen up front with him. Mr Hughes needs to make something happen.

Any team with sobhi and diouf in it
Just to liven things up a bit
If Diouf plays 90 mins up front I think he will score
With his head obviously, nobody expects him to score with his feet

There is a very good chance Edwards won't play, but what I struggle to understand, you get young players either in the prem / lower leagues which I guess is a lot more demanding on a young player trying break through, the ref's certainty arnt as lenient down the leagues as they are in the prem but they get given a chance. That's all they wanting a chance. If you have two players ahead of you who constantly get picked over you and they arnt doing nowt different than a young un does then where's the motivation to keep trying. Players get released because then they are to old to make it and their chance has passed. Yes we are struggling for a win, but when is the right time to play a young player?? Wouldn't put him on against the the top / big teams for a debut. Wouldn't put them on against teams who fighting to stay up, teams around us can't put them in against because we might get drawn down the table. Somewhere down the line they have to be given a run to see how they play. Cup games are pointless as they don't come around often enough to maintain the form of a player. Yes I've seen him play and he looks a promising player that needs a chance.

No I don't know Bardsley is going or staying, if he stays, Edwards is behind Johnson & Bardsley, but out on loan. If Bardsley goes, I'm assuming a new right back will be looked to sign. A new player won't come to be an understudy to an 18yr old I can't imagine. So again Edwards is pretty much in the same position. He needs playing and given a chance. If it doesn't work out, he moves on, if it does, he's saved the club a big amount of money.

------------------Butland--------------- -----Shawcross--BMI---Muniesa---- Diouf----Cameron---Allen-----Ramadan --------Shaqiri-------------Arnie--------- ------------------Berahino----------------- Shawcross is awful on the right side of a back three. Sorry, I'm on one. Can't agree with this. Only played it once or twice at most. Not really exposed in either imo. It's a new role for him, it provides a better balance than Ryan in the middle of a three from what I've seen. Always rated a three at the back {when done well}, and it's given us some of our more dynamic games this season imo. There is an element of not pulling off a full 90 with it, {against better opposition} but that's true to an extent with all our formations. I also thought there were glimpses {for a half} that Johnson took to right wing back ok, at least as well as he's been playing fb recently.
