I'm not against picking players from 'Boro, but fuck me they're in the relegation zone and play some absolutely insipid shit, surely there's a better option than that. I thought we were always complaining about players from big clubs being chosen????? Make your minds up!!! First line says I don't mind players from 'Boro being picked They're just shit and show no signs of improving though, so I was perusing if there's maybe a better option from a side that's actually playing half decent.

Defoe scores goals for a shit team and gets called up, deservedly so. Gibson is part of an impressive defensive record in a shit team so why shouldn't he be called up as well? Boro may be shit but it's at the over end of the pitch.

And I suppose you think Gibson is. What a clueless prick you are SGS Says the 'man' who claims there is an agenda against Ryan. Run along sonny. Still can't come up with a case for Gibson's inclusion over Ryan though can you. Jog on Sweetheart SGS

The thing that doesn't seem to have been picked up on here (unless I've missed it) is that Southgate knows Gibson and Keane well from his time with the u21s, where he played them together.
England need a team that aren't scared of the shirt, and can actually pull together when things go wrong to win a knock-out game a tournament. Southgate is clearly looking build a new "untainted" squad and whether you agree with that or not, Ryan is not going to get a look in.
And yes I know Defoe doesn't fit into that argument, but he's ace and I'd pick him

Ryan should focus on playing for Stoke City.

I think far too many people have made a judgement on this player without really seeing much of him in action. Purely because he plays for Middlesbrough.
As has been mentioned multiple times, Boro have a great defensive record and he has been the only member of that defence who has played pretty much all (if not 100%) of their games this season.
It is being reported that every elite team in England are scouting him, subject to a potential £25m transfer.
He is young and whenever I have seen him, looks to have a LOT of potential, not too dissimilar to Michael Keane.
Would be nice if a few people did a little bit more research before calling players shit.

Not sure about Ben Gibson per se and maybe he deserves a call up
BUT
in general while we are perceived as a well-run club we arent exactly identified as a good club for pushing England ambitions. The likes of Southampton, Swansea and now Leicester & Middlesborough seem to be ahead of us in this way.
That is the worry for me with the continued non-selection of Ryan. That we are labelled as hoof-merchants still from Pulis time and we dont have players that can get in the England squad. It was a shame with Glen Johnson got picked and then had to drop out through injury.
In real terms this can have an effect on potential signings. We are interested in Luke Shaw who would be great for Stoke and isnt getting in the Man United first-team. For sure he will have England ambitions, so will this affect his decision?

Jack is a Southgate favourite and will probably start for England once he is back playing regularly for us. The England manager will lean on those he knows and he will also look to promote youth. Ryan is neither and needs to concentrate on keeping his back in top shape to lengthen his career at Stoke. He will never play for England again and I think he has been resigned to this fact for the past few years now - something we should all do too and enjoy his last few years as our captain.

I know we are just speculating but say it comes down to a choice between Stoke & Southampton and he wants to get into the England team. Would our reputation stand against us?

Pretty sure he'd want to rejoin Southampton regardless of reputation linked to England.
