Not sure Hughes shares that view. I still wouldn't be surprised to se Crouch start, not that I'm happy with that. I'd have thought Shaq will be fit so we'll have a bit more attacking verve.

Football is a fairly simple game and footballers are notoriously simple. If you set a team up as 3-5-2 or 4-2-3-1 or 4-1-4-1 etc there's a very good chance you will confuse the fuck out of yourself and the rest of the players. 4-4-2 is the past and is also the future, nice and simple for simple people. Yep, I'm a straight 4-4-2 man myself as well. You can allow some fluidity within it, but the fundamental structure which everyone signs up to, understands and makes footballing sense should be 4-4-2. Very difficult to play 4-4-2 when you play with inverted wingers though. We don't have the wingers to play 4-4-2, or the fullbacks to play it as a diamond and we don't have the wing backs to play three at the back either. It essentially means that we have to play 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 - although it could be argued that the squad is so unbalanced, that we can barely make those formations work either.

Why is it these days that the defence does not inspire me? Even the midfield to a lesser extent.

Be mad if he didn't. There's a 3 man midfield where 2 or 3 have been poor the last few games. Bojan has gone. If he can't start now then he won't.

As we all learnt from the albion game some changes need to happen sparky! * Afellay is not a winger, He looked decent cutting in but please stop playing him on the wing. * Joe Allen as good as he is does not fill the number 10 role anymore, maybe play him by the side of whelan? * Keep bringing berahino on for last 20 - 30 minutes for crouch obviously depending on how crouch is playing. * When shaqiri and Ramadan are back and fit they both ideally need to start as we have missed the pace and creativity could possibly be key for Berahino to play off? * I would like to see this team if all fit: Grant
Johnson - Shawcross - Indi - Pieters
Whelan - Allen
Ramadan - Shaqiri - Arnautovic
Crouch
COME ON YOU MIGHTY POTTERS!!!!

At the minute that's about our best team although I'd go for Bardo at right back and Diouf up top. But there's more chance of me starting than Diuof getting a run up front. It looks the most balanced and it's got the least amount of players playing out of position.

That doesn't look to leaky, I actually thought they were playing well recently They've had zero protection from the midfield all season really. You can't expect a defence to hold up when they have attackers running at them directly and at speed like the opposition do. You need that barrier in front.

Isn't Ramadan a left winger though, indeed has he ever played on the right before?

He is! And no idea but I'd want those three interchanging tbh. Nothing is ideal though and at least they're all relatively where they need to be. You can't make a good looking team with everyone in their natural position though, that's the mess we're in.

I'd go 4411
Grant
Bards Erik Ryan Bruno
Glenn Imbula
Arnie Charlie Shaq
Crouch
Arnie and Shaq on their natural side getting crosses into Crouch with Charlie higher up the pitch picking up any bits.
I've picked Imbula really just to give him a chance and see what he can do as the candidates ahead of him aren't in any sort of form anyway.

Unless he's going to bring Sobhi into the fray, which seems unlikely, he has to start Shaq wide.
He gives the team some semblance of balance even when he isn't playing well.
I'd go with a midfield 3 of Whelan, Adam and Imbula with Shaq and Arnie wide.
My dilemma is who plays up front because to me, Berahino looks miles away from being ready to start and Crouch, is well, Crouch. His chronic lack of strength, pace and movement killed us on Saturday. I'd be more than tempted to start Diouf up front (who was actually hopeless when he came on at the weekend) or even wonder whether it is time to re-introduce Bony into the team.

Sounds similar to what I'd do, Dave but I'm working on him not taking Crouch out who has done well overall. I'd be happy to persist as well if we start getting some crosses into the box for him.

Diouf on the right. Bony up top and Affelay instead of Charlie. Affelay has done nothing to merit another start. Simply has to be dropped vs. Palace.

Grant
Bardsley - Shawcross - Indi - Pieters
Whelan - Allen
Shaqiri - Afellay - Arnautovic
Bony
Crouch needs a rest and we need a rest from aimlessly thumping balls up to him. Bony gets a start by default and needs to grab the chance with both hands. Diouf is not good enough on the ball and his boundless energy is simply not enough to warrant a start there. Berahino is not yet ready for a full game up front. Walters is crocked. Allen needs to nail down the box to box role which must be his settled starting place. Afellay should play centrally or not at all.

Please not Affelay on the wing.
Takes the balance right out of the team. Berahino, Diouf, Shaqiri, N'goy can all offer some form of threat down that other wing.

If Berahino starts he will have more than 4 touches of the ball that he managed at the weekend.

They should be there for the taking
Allardyce has made the team worse than under pardew. The sooner the dinosaur gets relegated the sooner no longer have his type roaming from club to club as a trouble shooter.
