Fantastic! What a team we had then, Big John, Mahoney, Pejic, Hazelgrave, Robertson, Salmonds, Skeels, Moores, Conroy, Huddy et al. Thanks for the memories.

Top banana lawrie! Used to have something similar on the wall near where I worked as a centre lathe turner. Had a Liverpool fan who set it on fire, but I managed to save it. Just got singed on the corners!

Wonderful. and a really nice guy (for the days when you could have a drink with the players afterwards). That wonderful goal of the season. What a strike. What was the name of the blond-haired guy with the beard? Ian something.

I went to a pie and pea supper night at the Rose and Crown Stanley moor last night . Jimmy was there with TC and Nello. Very interesting to hear him speak of the time when he left the club. He did not want to go , the club needed to sell him because of the financial director not insuring the stand that blew down. That has been well documented and we had to sell a few others as well because of one mans gross neglect of duty. What i was amazed at is that Jimmy attented a board meeting with all the directors and Tony Waddington and the said financial director. He again said he did not want to leave and the financial director stood up and said " Greenoff we think you are past it , your best days are behind you and we are selling you ". Jimmy said not one director could look him in the eye and Waddo just had a lump in his throat and said little. Jimmy was visibly angry that the financial director just refered to him as "Greenoff ". That was the last straw and off he went to play with his brother at Man Utd. He went on to win a cup final medal and a season later we were relegated.

I really enjoyed watching that clip. Fond memories of 'Star Soccer' on Sunday afternoons with Hugh Johns fabulous commentaries.

Great opening post to brighten the afternoon (on top of Liverpool losing!), many thanks. Interesting how many times Mahoney features. Tommy Docherty wrote in his autobiography that Waddington rang him to say he had been told to sell Greenhoff and naturally "he snapped his hand off". They also talked about selling Shilton to ManU but the ManU board were not prepared to buy a GK for the amount Waddington was asking. GKs didn't command much money in those days and Waddington couldn't sell him for what he thought he was worth and had to sell Hudson and Pejic among others.

Great to see that and what a player, some great goals, forgotten the superb finish in the 5-0 demolition of Arsenal. Always remember Greenhoff scoring a great header in the FA cup 4th round against Man City. I sure that game was on TV , sportsnight? But never seen any footage of it.

Great stuff! The reason why, despite being from South London, I started supporting Stoke. Saw him in my first ever footy match when my Arsenal supporting family took me to Arsenal-Stoke in 1970 (0-0). I think I was supposed to support Arsenal, but there you go!

An all time great, the football we played in the 74/75 season was the best I 've ever seen. I was also broken hearted when we sold him

My childhood Stoke team. A great watch and a different game to today's game but I am sure their talents would stand up to today's team with better pitches and fitness.
This and the early eighties team entertained before the lean years. Though Macari's first time was a very enjoyable period.
Seeing Coventry were they are now shows how you have to enjoy the days at the top table beating United , Liverpool and Arsenal.

Night before a match 😊
