And there was me thinking the days Wolves could make us look like a team of donkeys were long gone, first half all we lacked was Mama shooting 30 yards wide and Kav gliding round at 2 mph passing elegantly sideways.
Ok we rallied a bit, in vain, second half and we have a Prem survival campaign to concentrate on but by any standard today was woeful management. If we can't get the tactics right against a side like Wolves, on top of our failure to get the tactics right against too many other better sides lately, the finger has to be pointing at one man (and his backroom team) I'm afraid.
3* from me
* if you were there please
love you Albert xx

7 Picked a decent team, early substitutes, would have started Ngoy. The team he picked failed to turn up.

5* - picked a totally unsuitable side. The old cliche, 'you have to earn the right to play' still applies and there weren't enough players in that side who could buy us that right. Redeemed himself slightly by prompt half time action.

8 for team selection - its what we all wanted to see 8 for having the bollocks to hook the ineffective Imbula and Bojan 2 for not motivating the majority of players to fight and chase 1 for a rubbish game plan - if there was one -25 for losing aginst a B team and a manager with a simple predictable game plan

They are decent players, they just didnt turn up.Imbula needed an opportunty to see how he fared againt a Championship team, sadly he showed us. Shaq on his day is world class, sadly that doesn't appear to be a date on the calendar for 2017.

His players His formations His failure
Named a team that looks great on paper but they didn't turn up and that falls on his shoulders. Carrying a couple of off form players is one thing. The whole team failing is another

I have been critical of Hughes, but I don't think I have ever called for his job. At least not until today. "What the hell is going on?"
0* I was there and we lost! Note to self: don't go to cup games again!

2 - got the balance of the team totally wrong today. At least he had the courage to alter quickly. But who thought that line up would ever work against a hard working team.

3. Was quite happy with selection, imbula and shaq should have been taken off at half time, there is an argument that imbula should have been taken off earlier. What they do in training is beyond me, can't pass and play like strangers.

Sal, are we ever going to have a "Rate the players v.." thread or do we just dedicate glowing threads to them when they do well and blame everything on the manager when we lose?
Yes, of course Hughes takes some responsibilty but to give him a score of 3 which basically absolves the players of any blame is poor IMO. The Premiership players on the pitch we had against a piss poor Championship side should perform better than that whether or not they even have a manager on the touchline!

7* - picked players who should have been able to take the game to wolves, ins had the balls to change it at HT after they had failed to do so.

8. I was more than happy with the team he picked and happy that he made the right subs at the right time. For me the players have let us down big time today. I've been more than ready to stick the knife into Hughes when I've felt it was due but not today.

5* picked a team with no defensive midfielders. Attack was good. Brought on charlie at the right time, Allen sub was understandable. Bringing off Shaq for Ngoy was ridiculous, one of our few creators for a kid in that part of the game, couldn't work out why he'd do it Same team vs Sunderland as started the 2nd half please, with whelan for Adam

0 - didn't learn lessons from Bournemouth game when he picked a very similar team which produced a near identical performance.
Very poor.

6.
Picked a decent team and made the right changes.
Too many players let the manager, the club and the fans down.

8*
Picked a very positive starting line up. The team let him down in the first half.
Anyone with a remote experience of football will tell you that he gave them the mother of all rollockings at half time - he was visibly fuming walking off and the team (and him) came out early for the 2nd half. His subs were spot on and were exactly what were required.
I've been a bit miffed with him lately and the bigger picture isn't exactly rosey right now but on this game only, you can't fail to award him this mark for me. It isn't rate the result and performance, which was a -10. The players that took to the field owe the supporters and the manager a huge apology. They let us all down.
I don't think Hughes can be faulted much, apart from the lack of a bit of grit in the midfield in the first half, which was corrected.

6* I was happy with the starting line up but as others have said there really was some quite fucking awful performances from many of the players today. Grant, Afellay and Arnie are the only players who can look themselves in the mirror tonight, the rest really were absolute gash.

There's often a Player Ratings thread, it used to be musik most weeks but these days just kind of seems to spring up. My 3's about tactical approach to the game and (yet again) lack of sound defensive routines, I had no issue with the starting XI for a 3rd Round cup tie but if the majority of players appear either unmotivated or with no apparent idea what they're meant to be doing, that lands at the manager's door for me. The odd bad player performance is different, shit happens. I'd have marked lower than 3 if Sparky hadn't dragged the worst cuplrits off at HT. Wonder if that will prove to have been Bojan's last game in a Stoke shirt? Sad ending to what started out so well if it is.
