Happy 70th birthday to the biggest legend on the box.
I absolutely love the guy. He is the most unnatural and awkward presenter but his passion makes him completely watchable.
Long Weekend's is on all week on BBC2, well worth a watch.

Well said, saw this series first time round and watching it again. Hasn't lost anything. I only saw the Vienna one first time round and thought it was superb then caught the Reykjavik last night which was incredible, been looking at flights ever since. It was really great telly tonight watching him mix with Berlin hipsters, such a simple idea for a series but done so well. Love the guy.

Me and the missus have always watched his programmes from way back when his dog Chalky used to travel round the UK with him.
As you say he's never really looked comfortable in front of the camera but he somehow manages to get away with it. Our favourite series are the trip down the Canal du Midi in France, and his more recent trip round Spain in an old VW campervan.
The weekend breaks idea has been great but it has put us off visiting a couple of cities, Berlin being the one we liked least of all.

I love the Spanish episodes too, as it's one of my favourite cuisines along with Indian so naturally loved the Indian series. I've seen an episode or two in Greece as well which was really enjoyable. Fair enough about Berlin, I think it's very much young person's city so might not be everyone's taste (not saying that applies to you) but he definitely did a good job in portraying it in its true light despite not being particularly young himself. Did you enjoy any of the Long Weekends?

The whole rancid fish bit was priceless.

Most of Rick Stein's programmes are very watchable ....he took over Keith Floyd's mantle after Floyd abdicated and vowed never to work with David Pritchard ( the producer and director ) again ...Floyd became miffed with Stein consequently and didn't speak to him for years until shortly before his death , something that Rick Stein never really understood ...how very strange do people behave at times ?

We really enjoyed the ones in Vienna, Bordeaux (love France anyway), and Madrid, and liked most of them really except Berlin, oh and the rancid fish in Iceland (yuk)) !
We really weren't too keen on some of the "cuisine" on offer on his recent series through Albania and Greece - very basic and a little too "rustic" for our palates, although we enjoyed the non-cookery parts of the series as it's always interesting to see real life in different countries rather than the tourist image.
His series in India was really good as well, in fact we enjoy them all. We'd like to see him do a road trip in the States to see what "real" food the Americans eat rather than the stuff you see on TV.
Going off at a tangent we also like the travel programmes by Simon Reeve as he alwags shows these sometimes seemingly idyllic locations warts and all. Michael Palin's travel progs were always enjoyable but he usually did the nice bits wherever he went. More recently I've also enjoyed watching Michael Portillo's railway journeys with his Bradshaw's guide, and also Chris Tarrant's Extreme Railway Journeys.

You've named some good examples there, I try and make an effort to watch all of them, always entertaining. Chris Tarrant did a good job.

Pretty sure he covered Oatcakes in one of his programmes once. Yes he did in his very early Food Heroes series where he and Chalky drove round the U.K. highlighting local delicacies and specialist produce.

Dont let it put you off berlin mate, its a great place for a short break, and hertha is probably best football match experience ive ever had, and ive been to all the big european stadiums

Been to Austria loads of times but never Vienna looking forward to it..... There is a sports bar in that hotel, I trekked across half the city on foot to get to watch the Spurs away match (2-2) last season only to be told there was no chance whilst the Bundesliga was on. There's an Irish bar around the corner which is actually better about a minute walk away should you be going on a game weekend.
