So that was Leslie Mark Hughes's Stoke City in a nutshell today, the best and the worst. Fluent, creative, doing so many things well and bossing a long section of the game - but then total, abject crap at too many key moments. It wasn't the players second half, yet again in my strong view we just don't have the defensive routines to deal with quality pressure. Plus today imo Leslie got the subs wrong, not for the first time lately.
However... I'm rating on the basis that, if the game had finished a couple of minutes sooner, we'd all be talking about a good victory even if we had to ride our luck somewhat, this isn't wrist-slashing time. Suspect this will be highest mark tonights, but over the 90 it's a surprisingly high
7* from me

Inept. Reliant on Leicester giving us the game and then allowing it to be given back to them.

I don't know what he said to the team at half time but I wish he'd stay in the dug out. He must clearly tell the players to keep it tight and run the game down instead of attacking a 10 man team containing 6 on a yellow card. Failed to respond to the threat that Leicester were after their substitutions and then made a completely defensive substitution which only encouraged Leicester further onto us. A massive clusterfuck from the manager today I'm afraid and I'm only giving him a positive score because he set the team up well at the start of the game.
4* from me.

The players 8, the manager 1 he let them down. The players are not 5 year olds they are totally responsible for the shambles on the pitch when they cross the white line. The manager should ale action when the players are performing as abjectly as they did second half. Hughes did not perform his role and 1 is too high. The players just about earn 1.

The players 8, the manager 1 he let them down. The players were just as shocking as the manager in the second half. Mark Hughes will get all the stick on social media but we had an experienced team out there that should've seen the game out.

Hard to look at positives when you throw away a game like that. Good first half, good first 20 minutes to second half & an absolutely diabolical display of complacency after that. The subs were shocking, the players were shocking, the fans were shocking. The last 25 minutes of the second half summed up everything that's wrong with the mentality of the club.
A sympathetic 4 from me. Mark now has to get something from one of the next 2 games, otherwise we could loose sight of the top 10.

At 2-0 and against 10 men I wasn't confident we would win and I wasn't disappointed.
Woeful use of substitutions and tactically inept.
Our home form the last few years has been borderline garbage. A few wins against better sides has masked the woeful performances against weaker opposition.

5. The constant shuffling of players and formations is really starting to get on my nerves. I get that sometimes injuries have forced his hand but he needs to stick to a team and formation when we're playing similar teams.
The stream I watched as I couldn't make it showed Hughes telling players to basically defend a 1 goal advantage against 10 men. We should've been pushing them back rather than camping in our own 18 yard box.
The subs should've given us an outlet and a reason for Leics to sit in their own half but we persisted with a tired team rather than reinvigorating it for the last 20 mins.
Poor today from Hughes and to use Weds game as an excuse is insulting.

-460 Exactly the number of miles I've wasted this week watching that directionless , placeless. Gutless , collective of individuals , more detailed logic below Contemptible , the worst management display I've seen in 50 years . On Wednesday we are told 10 men playing70 minutes is a triumph to survive , today we list 2-0 to 10 men over 45 minutes . His interview was supercilious arrogance beyond comprehension , third goal Waukegan decide it , tired players . His utterly hapless number 2 says Ngoy is ready in the media what for 15 seconds as a sub while Rome burns . They were out managed out thought , out fought , out witted and made to look the cowards and directionless souls they have become . The next time he waves his arms at the crowd or moans about a referee he needs to be reminded about this shameful capitulation , the ref gave him the game and we gave it back with a ribbon on it . The failure to utilise Bony , Ramadan , Shaq , even crouch £50 million of talent showed the vision of stevie wonder and the clarity of thinking of a rabid dog Today given the resources was the worst 45 minutes of managememt I've seen in 50 years , each season had a defining result , e.g. When we beat Chelsea , when we lost in the cup at Liverpool last season, today is this years and the battle to 40 us now on Digusting display of utter incompetence matched only by the sheer arrogance , supercilious attitude and delusion of the past match interviews Read more: oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/user/16157/recent#ixzz4T85KUXV3

5* from me. Decent (if unexpected) starting 11 which capitalised on the sending off and Leicester's attempted self destruction in the first half.
Second half was shocking game management for which Hughes has to take a share of the blame as well as the players.
I'd have had Ramadan on early in the second half - possibly in place of Pieters, who I thought had a poor game whenever he got over the half way line. I can't work out why he is so shocking at crosses and so reluctant to put them in early but, today, he had a bad day at the office (he's a full back not a wing back) and Ramadan's power and confidence would surely have been more effective.
I'd have wanted either Diouf or Bony up top towards the end of the game to give Leicester something to think about - in the last 15 they were able to attack us without really worrying too much about their defensive duties.
I can't accept tiredness as an excuse when the subs were both late - and one was not even used at all.
I am still a Hughes fan but he MUST accept that he made some serious mistakes today - and he must learn from them

Taken with Wednesday's performance, Hughes' lack of tactical nous has been made crystal clear. There is no way that the players can play as a team when the personnel and formation change week by week. Pieters was expected to cover the left side all on his own, Walters was completely isolated, and goodness knows what position Bojan was supposed to be playing. The red card covered a pretty ordinary first half which was certainly not as good as Hughes claimed. The second half was a disaster. Where were the subs to change a game that was drifting away? Contrast the way Ranieri rescued a game that looked hopelessly lost. 2*

Absolutely diabolical. Hughes was handed three points on a silver plate from both the referee and Leicester but still managed to throw it away.
