‘When I was a 14-year-old, playing for Tottenham Schoolboys, I used to get to those first team games early so that I could watch Hoddle warm up. He was so graceful. The ball would come over and he would catch it on his back, knock it up and volley it back to where it came from. Everything he did was so classy, I couldn’t wait to watch him play. Then when I met him man to man, it was “Oh my God, what a c**t’. I can’t believe this.”

My sister was in his class at school and she always says, he was an arrogant dickhead. He went out with the headmasters daughter and then married her. He absolutely loved himself at school so it seems this continued into his adult life then.

decent stuff from Sheringham
When he was sacked by England it was made clear he had 'lost the dressing room' irrespective of his view on karma & stuff i.e.the players all thought he was dickhead

When he managed England the players used to call him chocolate because of he was made of chocolate he'd eat himself. He's always had the aura of loving himself.

There was a qualifier game somewhere and one story was Hoddle had a huge row with shearer and that effectively did for him. Both Gullit and Robson left shearer out and left Newcastle a few days later. Shearer was a political animal.

She was in the same class as Glen. I was in the same school but didn't know him but I know someone else who was on Spurs books and then played for Luton who were up and coming at the time, he also was a dickhead. I think that a lot of top sportsman are arrogant, otherwise they wont make it, they have to be the best to succeed, seems to come with the territory. Hoddle was an exceptional player tbf

Yeah but there are ways of being honest and then there's being outright rude, disrespectful and crude. He might think he's a c**t, but saying it in a public arena is a slightly different matter. I suppose it depends on the context. Anyway I've never liked Sherringham much either. Lovely player but always thought he was a bigheaded, full of himself c*.. erm, I mean bloke.

i loved Hoddle when i was growing up.
i don't give a shit what they're like personality wise to be honest. they're not paid to be nice people, they're not paid to have a great personality, one person's c**t is another person's best friend as we all judge people differently.
bit of a non-story to say the least. i dare say you could find people that have met Pele, Maradonna, Puskas, probably even Sir Stan who didn't like them too...who cares if they do the job that they're paid to do well?

I agree mate. One point is though the way Hoddle (seems to fail to) relate to people has been a story of his managing career.

Problem is Hoddle's managing is peppered with stories of how he would belittle his players when they weren't as good as he was. It's crazy, how many are going to be as good as he was? After the England Spain game he was on about John Stones saying the balls he played out were fine because he would have no trouble controlling them and keeping the ball. And there is the issue with him. Fair enough, HE would be able to control and use the ball there but he was freakishly talented. He has no empathy or realisation some players aren't as good as he was. And he didn't mind letting them know how good he was and it was done in a way which didn't help morale.

Who cares if they are arseholes? Well me for a start, don't get me wrong what they do in their personal life is none of my concern as long as its legal.....My point I'm trying make is football is a team game the unit is stronger than an individual.

I thought he was a brilliant footballer and therefore I'm not really interested in his personality.

My memory of Hoddle was that he was an excellent club player but never cut it playing for England - a bit like John Barnes.

The skills and attributes that make a great player are completely different from the attributes needed to make a great manager. Your physical skill with the ball and so on mean nothing as a manager where it's all about personality, people skills, being able to persuade cocky arrogant young players that you know better than them and they should listen to your instructions etc. Many top managers were average players and that shows how there is generally little link between playing ability and management ability.

Excellently put. I have been fortunate in my life to see some truly great footballers, Hudson, Best, Greenhoff, Charlton, Law and many more. Hoddle was one of those, anyone who was at Stoke the day Spurs came and took us apart with him running the show will know what I mean.
