So many clueless fucks it's frightening. Castro dislodged Batista who presided over a brutal racist regime that made a select few very rich by pimping the nation out to the US. By doing so he lifted millions out of poverty and the hardcore treatment of Batista's henchmen was with the support of the people. He created a universal healthcare system that can arguably be classed as p4p #1 in the world, Cuba exports that knowledge around the world, indeed Cuba has more medical personnel helping the developing world than the entire G8 combined, little old Cuba. Every Cuban citizen is able to read & write because of the free education system which has enabled women to rise and become the equal to men in terms of professions. Castro orchestrated a Cuban military intervention in Angola which defeated the US backed apartheid South Africa regime, even though initially the Soviet Union refused to support his intervention, he went it alone before finally the Soviet gave their support. Castro paved the way to ending apartheid, as Mandela says “The Cuban people hold a special place in the hearts of the people of Africa. The Cuban internationalists have made a contribution to African independence, freedom and justice, unparalleled for its principled and selfless character,” Mandela said. “We in Africa are used to being victims of countries wanting to carve up our territory or subvert our sovereignty. It is unparalleled in African history to have another people rise to the defence of one of us.” All of this despite a US embargo and endless covert attempts to assassinate him. Castro died owning up to his faults, he's admitted & taken responsibility for the "great injustice" that gay Cubans endured. Whilst the attitudes towards homophobia derived from pre revolution and being a Catholic country he should've been better. Cuba has taken many steps to reverse repression & public attitudes, so much so even gender realignment is offered free and a transgender makes part of the government. Castro was perhaps the biggest G to ever walk this earth and those on here berating him aren't worth 0.1% of Fidel so exert your freedom of speech all you want, you ain't shit to a man that'll go down in history as an all time great protector of humanity.

Black? What. Batista's henchmen were to ones put to death and even liberal academics note the vast majority of those put down were guilty of horrific crimes themselves.

But you would have to be a clueless fuck to laud Cuba for sending doctors overseas when the real reason for doing this is foreign cash, nearly $8.2 billion is one estimate for what Cuba will be paid for its Doctors who earn $60 a month in Cuba. Their families remain in Cuba to “encourage” them to return.

RIP to the old bloke. It'll go down as a sad thing because future generations will be bright enough to understand that diversity is interesting, even essential - whether that be the diversity of people, places, governmental systems... How ironic that Fidel did not think diversity was interesting or essential

Agree that he was pretty awful to certain sections of his own population.

Brilliant post. Respect to you.

But to lionise Castro principally on his opposition to the US paints a distorted picture of the man.
