I don't think that Jez would mind me sharing the fact that he has taken on an allotment. Any advice for him? I think that he should give us a fortnightly update on the progress of his onions!

So, am I OK now? No. Sadly a long way off, but I am far far better than back in June when I had my stroke. So that you are aware: after I had the stroke (when they said I wouldnāt make it) and left sided brain surgery (boy this is a laugh on this thread isnāt it?). Reading and writing (aphasia) is now a very long journey to follow ā but I am getting there ā slowly. Iām now starting (slowly) to look at the Oatcake occasionally. I watch a lot of football (thanks Kodi which I have retaught myself again) and cricket (itās far easier watching sport or old TV as Iām still slow). Iām (of course!) watching Stoke ā and will be going to my first Stoke game for over a year. My Dad is taking me to the Arsenal game (and my Brother is kindly loaning me to his season ticket so I can see the game ā cheers mate!) Anyway, I will post updates on how Iām getting on - if people would like? Also, Iād like to say thanks to bigjohnritchie and mermaidsal (I will email you soon ā sorry ā I am so slow!) Thanks again fellow Stokies ā it really does help me friends. welcome back ukc, hope the recovery is going well and as expected and more. were you in the Haywood at all, I have been visiting a relative in there and seen a couple of guys with very big scars on the left side of the head?

Beautiful day here up North! I am just watering my courgettes, lettuce and cucumber , and putting up my bean row , as well as planting a few non-veg plants. What are you up to? Any signs of anything " coming on" ?

Anyone any advice on; Overseeing lawns, seems simple but I always seem to be failing, more difficult than sowing seed from scratch in my opinion Keeping black bamboo alive Keeping box healthy, that doesn't seem to be suffering from box blight, but is looking it's leaves, a bit like my hair.

For planting a new lawn, never use the quick-grow seeds, they're not durable, so I use regular seed. Better still, rolls of turf on a thin layer of compost. For reviving an existing lawn, weed and feed regularly, fork as the do football pitches to allow oxygen to access roots. Maybe rake a little compost over it. Patience is key.

Bamboo needs to be kept well watered in summer ( at least three times per week ) they are also very hungry feeders a high nitrogen feed is beneficial once a week , a mulch of well rotted manure in the spring also helps the feeding regime and prevents the plants drying out . I have bamboo in my garden and follow this routine the plants are in fine fettle at the moment .

Thanks for all the advice, I agree about the patience and choice of seed for the overseeding, Mendicant, I didn't get round to mine today.....it will be the third attempt at different patches this year, I'm going to get some better seed tomorrow ( do you recommend any ( brand)..there was a supplier near to me that sold it lose, but I am afraid that he has stopped trading) Bish, I'm ok on the ordinary bamboo which is doing well with very little attention, my black bamboo is losing leaves...Ive given it a good soaking today, but I thought that I read somewhere that you could over water them ( which admittedly does not make much sense.

Great poster, I wish him all the luck in the world with his recovery. Just checked out his last post dated June 15th, well he was right about our tough start to the season! From ukcstokie on June 15th: That looks a bloody difficult start: Boro away - they'll be flying and have the crowd really up for it. Very difficult. Man City home - their first away game under Pep. Could be very tough. Everton away - Koeman will undoubtedly make them much tougher to beat. Spurs home - if Spurs continue their form from the second half of last season this will be one of the tougher home games. Palace away - do we ever get anything there? WBA home - should win assuming the officials don't give them a helping hand. Man U away - Nil points as the Norwegian jury would say. Read more: oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/user/1185/recent#ixzz4PSx5ixCzGet well soon! I notice you were just one point out with your predictions!

Well it depends on the size of the plant , if they are well established they do need plenty of water, obviously though good drainage is essential , you will always get a certain amount of leaf drop on Bamboo , but there should be plenty of new ones coming through at this time of the year ....keep an eye on it it should be ok .

Any signs of anything " coming on" ? Hi mate - and thanks for to everyone's kind comments! Well I've seem to have spent every day for most of a month watering (pretty much no proper rain down here for ages). Well the onions seem to be doing well, and I seem to have lots of potatoes (lots!) but the rest is pretty slow (like no carrots that I thinks should be popping up by now?). I'me working on my polytunnel: although only my broccoli seems to be really doing well (though I'm informed I have so much I may as well get rid of them!). Some garlic was put in today, as was some bail too. I put in a random bunch which I have no idea what they are - I'll just see what grows! Cheers!

Make sure your carrots are covered with a layer of fleece to deter carrot fly mate or their larvae will decimate your crop .

OK, well to see if this will cheer you up abit (well maybe?) after Stoke and the Ashes? I am slowly continuing my long journey after my stroke, but it is slow. Very slow. The updates I had mentioned in my previous posts are probably slow as it takes bloody ages to type anything ā so sorry ļ. So, my allotment did well, I got lots of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, etc. (yep, I canāt bloody remember them). Hopefully I should get a new shed shortly (thanks, Dad!). I am done volunteering to help myself chat with people. I can only understand a percentage with any chat with people (between 5% to 75%), but I will gradually improve I hope. Chatting to some of the OAPs can be really beneficial to them and me. I chat with a lady who is 102, while there is a 96 year old who drives, is getting a 70 year old, and drove a Lancaster in the war! I now have a bus pass ā yep a forty year old bloke (thanks to epilepsy). I have just recently started reading short stories. Its very slow. Very slow, but Iām getting there. But as someone who hadnāt read fiction since the start of the ā80s (I only read non-fiction), so itās a bit of a change. Iām sure that thereās other things, but thatās because I canāt rememberā¦err, āthingsā. My final things, talking with people helps me get better. I know Iām now crap (onhestly) at remembering things, but if any of you would like a chat on the phone then it would help me. I wonāt get it all, but it will help me get a bit nearer, so if you want a chat would be brilliant! Just message me on the Oatcake ļ. Several really generous Oatcakies (!?) have chatted to me already, and that is really good ā THANK YOU. And really finally: GO ON STOKE!

I can vouch for the theraputic powers of having an allotment. I have had heart bypass surgery and suffer from kidney failure (I am on dialysis). I have an allotment and grow much of my own veg. Gentle exercise, fresh air and having control over what goes in to your food can only help. There is a social side to allotments as well (the lady next to me on the allotment keeps gin in her shed). The only trouble is the ribbings I get from Man.U. and City fans when Stoke lose - an all too frequent occurrence just lately. Good luck with you spuds etc. for next year. I have already hinted at a potential use for your shed (beer if not gin, perhaps. Very best wishes from cerbralstokie.
