He's right up big sams street. I think we'll see fewer poncy half fit arsenal reserves in the squad from now on. Have a good un skipper

If true, it must be the first time Ryan has been specifically watched by an England manager.
Knowing Ryan if he was asked how he was feeling by allardyce he'd probably be honest and say that he's not been in best of form but I working hard and will be back to his best soon

He needs to improve 100% then, or it'll be Hodgson treatment from now on.
Still despise Hodgson with a passion.

This is as tough a game as Ryan will have this season.
If he can keep Lukaku at bay today then he should be in the England squad and any questions about fitness will be put to bed

Allardyce will be monitoring Barkley and will take the opportunity to look at the likes of Jagielka and Shawcross. Holgate ( the new John Stones) has received a good press so Big Sam's probably taking his first look at him also.

I'd like to see him get that bit of edge back in his game and ignore the stupid penalty decision last week. If he doesn't grab hold of lukaku and fight him Lukaku will be doing it back to him and will make mince meat of him. He needs to play his normal game, yes be a bit more subtle in the area but be ready to get dirty with Lukaku, show him who's boss.
I appreciate there is a lot of homo-erotic undertones in that post but this seems to be the way of the oatcake MB lately

It's absolutely marvellous! Shawcross's place in Stoke's team should be seriously under question and yet there are some people who believe he can be England's answer. Wollsheid has been consistently better and he gets loads of abuse thrown at him. On Shawcross's best form there are major question marks over his ability to play for England! As much as he might have done for Stoke in the past under a more compact nine man defence Shawcross has struggled to come to terms with more responsibility. Hopefully he can improve for us as he is the best we've got at the moment except for Wollsheid but you need to get real. He's got no chance of playing for England!

I fear there will b a penalty in this game as Ryan has incorporated the pulling of a player in the box into his game and he needs to get out of this habit very quickly

On his best form he's the best English centre half in the country. He should have 30 caps to his name by now. Sadly a manager who appreciates what a centre half should be able to do has come in at a time when Ryan has been struggling for both form and fitness.

Shawcross in form puts supposedly world-class strikers in his pocket with his eyes closed, and we've seen plenty of that even during Hughes' reign playing in a more open system than under Pulis. I swear a lot of our support have goldfish brains, yes Ryan is a long way from his best right now and I don't think an England call up at this point in time would be appropriate but it's like people haven't got the ability to look at the serious injuries he's gone through, and to rationalise that it's going to take a considerable length of time for Shawcross to regain confidence in his own body. And it's like he's all of a sudden become an average player and the last few years are now irrelevant. (note: Suarez consistently owned Shawcross but that's no insult to Shawcross) Maybe he will never get back to his best but there's no question he should've been involved in the England setup over the last 4 or 5 years. And if he does get back to his best, there's no question that he should be involved in the coming years. When I see the general opinion shift so seismically and it becomes more and more common for posts like yours silverdollar, I really wonder to myself whether people espousing these new beliefs were also people who have at one point been singing Ryan's praises from the rooftops.

It's hard to admit it, but I'm sure everyone feels Shawcross' time has gone. His back will continue to restrict him doing the things he did brilliantly (dominate the air, last ditch tackles etc). He fell over twice just turning sharply to pass the ball against Man City, and just isn't moving right at all. It's a travesty that he'll only have 1 cap to his name.

No Stoke fan can justify Shawcross's selection for England at this moment in time. An England fan might. If Sam is thinking of playing 5 at the back then he might want to pick a minimum of 4,and more realistically 5, actual centre backs he's got such a tiny pool of centre backs to choose from that a not 100% Shawcross has to be under consideration. Hyperbole is everything on message boards and although he hasn't been any where near his well established high standards in the two games this season he showed v West Ham that it's all still there. All eyes on him today. Let's see if he can do it today.

BUT, he isn't fit, either mentally or physically, there is perhaps something there that is holding him back. He hasn't been in good form recently either. I think it would benefit both England and Stoke if he weren't picked this week

SPOT ON. The voice of reason, and the situation with Ryan summed up to perfection. The best post I've read on 'ere since…… since…… since…… well, for ages. Just to put you right on one thing. My opinion is not a recent one. Shawcross was a giant under Pulis and his tactics but never good enough for England because there were always four or five ahead of him. At this time he was at the peak of his form! Football is a cruel game. Any player at Premiership level is under pressure all the time to be at their very best. It is no good saying "Ryan is a long way from his best right now" The most important question right now is how and where can the team be strengthened? IMO we require two new centre halves who are better than what we already have who are comfortable in possession and we require a goal scorer. Even if we get these requirement a good manager should be looking to improve his team to make it even better! You can appreciate what a player has done for a team but you can never rest on your laurels.

The voice of reason, and the situation with Ryan summed up to perfection. The best post I've read on 'ere since…… since…… since…… well, for ages. Thankyou, that's nice of you. A similar thing happened to Andy Murray, he had to have some bone shaved off his spine and even when he was "fit" again it took him several years to get his 2012-2013 form back, in fact IMO he only truly recovered this year but is now in the form of his life again. Shawcross' injury, whilst serious, wasn't as serious as Andy Murray's. The relative ages at the time of injury when peak age for a tennis player / peak age for a football CB are taken into consideration are effectively the same, so I have great hopes for Ryan still despite the overbearing feelings of doom and gloom on here.

I hope ryan gets back to form, but he will need more than one good game to get another chance to play for England.
It is a bit sad how the papers keep attacking ryan, he is not the only player who holds players on corners. He has become an easy target after the bad press he received from the ramsey incident.
