How did Ryan do? it would be a big plus point if he was solid today against the likes of Lukaku He played okay, some important tackles but he was also beaten a bit too easily at times. He missed a lot of football last season so I think it's going to take him some time to get back to the level we know he is capable of.

Didn't do himself any harm at all, looked a little more like the Ryan of old. A player of the quality of Lukaku will give even the best defenders in the world a few problems

At least Sam witnessed his excellent performance at Everton.

Richard Jolly writing in The Guardian/Observer was less impressed:
"If Shawcross’s twin exercises in defiance indicated his powers of recovery, they also felt timely as Sam Allardyce watched on while he finalises his first England squad. Yet the Stoke captain’s struggle to contain Lukaku underlined the concern that a defender whose sole taste of international football was notable for Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring four times can be found wanting against top-class strikers."

I heard Terry Conroy on Radio Stoke say that "out of the two Cameron played the best"

How did Ryan do? it would be a big plus point if he was solid today against the likes of Lukaku He was excellent in my view. Won almost everything in the air, lots of interceptions and key tackles. Back to something like his usual standards. Sitting where we do at Everton, I was able to watch him organising in the first-half. Don't let anyone say he doesn't.

Mistimed a situation with Barkley in the second half that led to a good chance for Everton, but apart from that he looked solid.

The Guardian has always hated Stoke mate. They'd never question a London-based defender getting done by two of the best strikers on earth.

He's got a point. Allardyce should stick with defenders who can't handle the mighty Iceland strike force.

I thought he was good, but there was one moment where Lukaku outmuscled him and got the turn on him that I doubt would have happened two years ago when he was at his peak. Getting done by Barkley was also a bit dodgy, but Allardyce had left at that point.
He should make the next England squad. He's still the country's best centre back.

Stones is nailed on, not sure who else would play. Smalling?

I reckon in the circumstances of his injury yesterday was a huge plus point and indicated to the daft buggers starting to write him off that there's plenty of miles left in Ryan's tank. Welcome back, Skipper!

Allardyce is an old school man manager. I think this squad is too soon for Ryan but wouldn't be surprised if he's in touch and said "good game Saturday get back to your consistent best and you've got a chance"
That's where old Roy was weak as piss....

He did much better yesterday. However, he has a ways to go before he is back to where he was before his operation. In particular, he doesn't seem to me getting back when he's beaten or when the opposition get's in behind us. Hopefully, this is a lack of fitness and confidence. He's a good way off being ready for a call-up to the England squad. In fact that's the last thing we need. Hughes needs all the time he can get to sort out the significant problems at the back. That's even more important if we sign a CB because he'll need than two weeks to develop a partnership with Shawcross.
