Probably the worst display I have seen us put together in the Premier League.
I thought last year was bad but today's corners were fucking clueless.
It's not rocket science Stoke, you stand on the edge of the 18 yard box and attack the ball that's head height in the 12 to 8 yard range.
All this standing on the goal line hassling defenders and the keeper is bollocks. Most players don't even know where the ball is 😡

Very weird. Something has to improve. Commentators still consider us a threat, I'm convinced any opposing manager knows better. I hope Mark Hughes is aware and is looking to address it. If we created a chance 1 in 5 I'd be happy, a goal 1 in 10 would give us at minimum an extra 9 points I reckon. |

Set pieses is clearly not in the tactical plans to MH. We have to cope with that. It will come back to haunt MH and Stoke. I`m sorry to say it, but Stoke have no chance of a top 6 place in the league if we don`t improve drasticly in set pieses.

In the pre season match I watched against Orlando Bojan took a corner and raised both hands like Whelan does, as if theirs some plan, alas it seems not. We had countless corners and freekicks in dangerous areas all rendered useless.

On a slightly different note - we did score from a set piece yesterday
(All the others were terrible though. The one at the end from Whelan to Arnie that went straight out pretty much summed them up.)

My take is, because we don't have, or pose much threat from corners we've decided to let bojan take them and whip them in under the bar to try and cause confusion and panic in their defense. Was it Preston or Hamburg where bojan nearly scored direct from one whipped in? He was trying it yesterday but they were going over the bar. All our players stand on the keepers toes, pushing and shoving takes place, and we either hope for a penalty with the new rules on holding and shoving, or we score direct or from bundling it in under chaos. New rule from next season for me. No attacking player can stand within touching distance of the keeper from a corner. All this shoving and standing on the keepers toes adds about 15 minutes onto a game! |

There was that much pushing and shoving that even if we did manage to win a header chances are we'd have been penalised. It was just plain daft and I hope we don't see it again. |

I think fans are pretty much the same at all clubs. Yesterday wasn't great but it's early days. We can, and will, be a lot better. It does seem that there may be some truth in what Wilson has suggested though and that's a worry. A little structure defensively and a more drilled approach to set pieces (corners in particular) would, IMO, have a positive impact on us. |

Stoke fans are particularly good at moaning, as is the general population of this area. If it's not the set pieces it will be something else. The manager needs to work out how to get the best out of his attacking players while trying to keep us solid at the back. IMO he needs a rethink on the shape of the side as I don't think we'll get the best out of Imbula playing 4-2-3-1. Whinging about a few corners is pointless. We scored from a fee kick yesterday and nearly scored from another corner. People like to bitch. |

It seemed like we focused a lot on in-swinging corners yesterday, I can't recall us producing an out-swinging corner all game. I've always preferred to see in-swinging corners but the trouble is keepers get so much protection these days and you aren't able to crowd the 6-yard box and put pressure on them like you used to do, the referee is just waiting to blow up. I think that's why out-swinging corners seem to be far more common in top flight football these days.
Bojan's dead ball deliveries were poor yesterday but I still thought he was one of our better players on the day.
I thought it was interesting that Imbula is now tasked with marking the back post when defending corners, I can't recall seeing that last season. Presumably Hughes isn't that comfortable with having him marking man to man in the area, I can sort of understand that as he does have a tendency to switch off defensively at times.
It's pretty clear we have been working on some aspects of attacking and defending set pieces, hopefully they will improve as the season goes on.

First of all you must be able to get the ball in front of the goal, not behind the goal (Bojan twice!)! Then you should be able to get it over the first man (if it's an opponent). After that we need someone to attack the ball! I must say I was wasn't very impressed by Bojan's corners as I think he had just one that was good! I honestly think I've could have done better myself and I'm not drunk!  |

You would think that a set piece , particularly a corner , would be seen as a matter of pride by a coaching team. 'Straight off the practice ground' is a compliment to all concerned when it goes right. It's also the quickest and easiest route to the results that keep coaches in jobs.
For that reason I find it very hard to believe that our set up don't put a fair degree of effort into them - either they are not very good at it or the players don't do what they are told!
