You would think that a set piece , particularly a corner , would be seen as a matter of pride by a coaching team. 'Straight off the practice ground' is a compliment to all concerned when it goes right. It's also the quickest and easiest route to the results that keep coaches in jobs. For that reason I find it very hard to believe that our set up don't put a fair degree of effort into them - either they are not very good at it or the players don't do what they are told! if he's as obsessed with us playing this brand of football and formation as he is with berahino i can believe we ignore set pieces in favour of passing. What was it einstein said about doing the same things and getting different results... Looks pretty much the same to me

I'm beginning to think Hughes sees working on set pieces, especially corners, as rather "Old Skool Stoke" and since his brand is the style reformer don't get much attention.

It seems training is mostly passing and picking up injuries these days , we don't seem to practice much else although Shaq might have done a bit on free kicks , that was a sweet strike yesterday

The irony is that he plays a right footed winger on the left and a left footed winger on the right but gets a right footed striker to take in-swinging corners from the right that go straight out for goal kicks.
If we're trying to attract Bony, Berahino or Benteke I only hope they don't pay too much attention to our delivery into the box.

Our first short corner wasn't bad, but they clocked onto it after the first one.
The one where we basically line up on the goal line and Bojan try to curl it into goal was fucking terrible, side netting off a corner?
Terrible, 8/10 you can guarantee from an offensive corner the ball ends up at our keepers feet.

Shawcross is supposed to organise things defensively, not just his own role, but the entire defensive parts. He used to be good at this, it was probably why Pulis made him captain, but currently with him not being fully fit and lacking confidence, he's not doing so well at this.
Also when Sorensen was our goalie he too was very vocal and could set up the defence the right way. Then Begovic came in, brilliant keeper as we know, but not so good at that particular job. Butland is potentially good at ordering defenders about, but he's still young and maybe some defenders, like Bardsley, Johnson, and Pieters don't respect him as much. This was further worsened when Haugaard came in, because none of his team mates took any notice and weren't bothered. Given at 40 should have no such problems, but he hardly knows our defenders.

How could defenders like Johnson, Bardsley and Pieters possibly fail to respect Butland? Nonsense.

Basically they have no idea what they are doing from corners so they've resorted to standing on the line and wait for Bojan to shoot from the corner, and then they see what happens :/

Utter wank.
1. Take the corner properly. Stop trying to deliver a ball that looks good, has whip on it or any of that shit. Stand it up 8-12 yards out and allow our players to compete for it.
2. Stop standing in a group. Stand individually and attack the ball. All this blocking off, standing in a group nonsense does is allows the defence to block you in.
3. Pre-plan where you are going to put it and who's going to attack it.
Get back to fucking basics.

On the whole, league wide goals from corner kicks have declined every season since 2009.
Stoke earned the fewest corner kicks last season with 4.03/ game. Liverpool had the most at 6.97 -- just three corner kicks a game separate the top and bottom, that's a small gap.
In terms of conversion, Palace led the league in goals scored from corners with 11 -- about a 5% success rate. Our success rate was less than 1%, this seems absurdly low.
If Stoke converted 5% of corners last season it would have resulted in six more goals scored. We'd still be in the minus for goal differential, likely would still have finished 9th, but may have picked up a few more much needed points or perhaps extended a cup run

Why ignore something that might bag you an extra half a dozen points a season??
Could be the difference between just a 9th/10th place finish and that Europa league spot. Doesn't mean that you have to do anything differently outfield. Its not a binary choice. All the great sides utilise set pieces. Its definitely costing us.
Its surprising as there was nothing in Hughes playing career to suggest he would be such a purist.

We don't do coaching of set plays or defending as we know. Do we? Forgive me if I don't take the any notice of the words of a disgruntled employee.

Christ on a BMX, the dross written in these forums is mind boggling. Up yours yourself. Given spent lengthy periods out of the squad in his first season, being injured, and he only recently returned from an extended leave follwing the euros. So what it all adds up to is very little time spent practicing and organising the defence the way he wants them to position themselves. Christ on a BMX, the dross written in these forums is mind boggling.

You'd think with Shaq Arnie and Bojan on the field we'd be able to take a few decent corners wouldn't you! Perhaps they'll let Arnie have a go next.

It's a damn site different watching how defenders play and training regularly with them.
