I strongly disagree. The whole point of playing him & Arnie as wingers is that when one of them gets the ball (usually Shaqiri), the other starts running inwards straight towards the opposition box, becoming virtually a second striker. These inward cross field through balls by both wingers was one of our most effective attacking strategies from last season (perhaps even the only one) and to play Shaq in the number 10 role would mean this will no longer work (let's be honest Walters is not going to pick out a through ball of that sort). You're right he's not a traditional winger but neither is Arnie & Hughes is fully aware of this. Plus Shaq was given his chances to play in the number 10 role last season, particularly in the games against Leicester away from home & the second half against West Brom & he was god awful in both games. Yesterday it's true that our play improved when Shaq replaced Bojan in the middle but that has more to do with the fact that Bojan was absolute shite the whole game & anything that followed would've seemed like an upgrade. My main reason to move him inside is we need someone with more pace out wide,as he and Arnie are not the quickest. If we sign someone with more pace out wide, then I would reconsider.

I've been saying this for a long time. Stick him the middle, play Sohbi and Arnie on the wings, Imbula and Allen (or Whelan) behind. Bojan and Shaq can fight it out for #10. Sorted Sobhi is not ready, he needs a couple of months to get him up to speed. Premier League is a different beast.

Shaqiri isn't a winger neither is Arni in fact we don't have any out and out wingers in our squad because we don't play with them. Both are more of an inside forward/ inverted winger. As already mentioned our width should come from our fullbacks and the front three behind the main striker should all have a licence to roam, the problem is this rarely seems to happen. Both Shaq and Arni like to come inside and both have a great shot on them, this is fine when playing on there ' wrong side ' but can become predictable. Both players also have the ability to go past a man and put a decent ball into the box this for me is best suited to when they are playing on there ' write side ' , so to avoid checking back and slowing down the play and allowing the oppositions defence to get into position, but how often do we see this. It seems the 3 behind the main striker aren't as fluid as they should/could be.
Our fullbacks are far to slow to do what they are being asked to do, they don't pose the same threat as your Clynes, Walkers, Bertrands, Rose's going forward, and similarly aren't quick enough to get back and make a recovering tackle if caught out of position. We could maybe get away with there lack of pace if one of our centre backs or holding midfielder ( Whelan ) had a bit of pace about them. To often last season we got caught out of position and weren't quick enough to regroup.

Right now we are so predictable and therefore easy to defend when the wingers always cut inside. Neither Bardsley nor Pieters (especially) are good enough to overlap on the outside. Johnson can but he's always crocked. At least switching around would stretch the defense and keep them on their toes. Right now we are very narrow.

Totally agree and it's so frustrating, any level of football I've ever played at I would always see managers telling there wide men to ' swap for ten ' ( often it was me ). Sometimes myself and fellow winger would take it upon ourselves to do this if say one of us wasn't getting any joy out of an opposition fullback. As you say it keeps defenders guessing and can be implemented in game without any serious change to our shape.

What's wrong with sticking Bojan on the wing for 10 minutes and playing Arnie or Shaq in the middle. Is it that hard to understand? I just don't get it.

He had a good understanding with Johnson. But Johnson is 32 and often injured, feel sorry for Shaqiri to have Bardsley and Cameron behind him. Surely we could use the loanmarket to bring in a fullback. Cameron is better than Bardsley and he offers height.

He's certainly not an out and out winger in the Pennant or Etherington mould and I think that's why some fans seem to get frustrated when he isn't trying to get past his man everytime he gets the ball.
Shaqiri is more of an inverted forward and in our current set up I'm more than happy for him to play in an advanced position on the right, he's got a real eye for a defence splitting pass and I'm hoping this season he gets a few more goals because he's certainly more than capable of doing so.
I'm a fan of Diouf but I really feel someone like Berahino, who's more comfortable on the ball is much more suited to the way we play and would be better at dragging the oppoosition defenders out of position allowing the likes of Shaqiri, Bojan and Arnie to ghost into those vacated spaces and do some damage.

We are not going to get a full season out of Johnsona And Eric offers very little going forward. Our lack of goals is partly due to slow movement of the ball through midfield but also a lack of players getting forward, we need the full backs to overload defences

I just watched a replay of Diouf's equalizer away at Chelsea last season. It was started with beautiful pass by Bojan to Shaq who crossed to the far post for Arnie. Bego made a mess of his punch and Diouf headed into a more or less empty net. The right footed cross from Shaq was excellent, which makes me wonder why we don't do that more often because this shows that we clearly can.

He is a world class footballer and he plays for us. I, for one, don't care what position he plays. Just wallow in his skill and enjoy. Rant over.

We're never going to get Shaq having a run in any position because of his persistent injuries - he strikes me as one of those who will cry off at the slightest twinge. Does anyone know the stats on his injury record compared to others or is it just I'm so disappointed he won't be playing tomorrow that I'm starting to think he's a sick-note player?

he has the vision and technique to play the killer ball more often than most . So he is better in the middle where he has more options
he would be ace playing the teddy sheringham role just behind an alan shearer style striker
but not having a quality striker and letting bojan play in his preferred position does him no favours
sadly I can see him being a smash hit somewhere else .

I know he cost us 12, but with prices already inflating, buying a replacement could cost us 20-25M. so unless we can get that sort of money for him, even a Shaq who misses, say, 10 games every season through niggling injuries, could still be what we need.

I would keep him and playing him instead of bojan behind the striker. I think he's a great player and I have more faith in shaq playing Diouf or arnie in than bojan beating his man at the moment. I would probably change my mind if bojan got back to his best. But bojan would need a massive return to form for that to be true.

I think everyone thought he was,he seems to be much more comfortable centrally. Shame is we are overloaded with Allan,Imbula,Bojan,Adam Personally i would play him in the number 10 ahead of Bojan but that leaves us again short of wingers. At the moment he's only a part time player!

sadly I can see him being a smash hit somewhere else . Bojan said that the reason he joined Stoke was because Hughes told him he would play in his preferred position, which is Center Forward. In other words in front of Shaqiri. Either Hughes has a short memory or something changed.

He plays better when he drifts inside. Arnie likes to make runs into the middle. Why they are constantly stuck out on the wing is enough to want to pull my hair out. The 3 of Arnie/Bojan/Shaqiri should be fluid and swap places 4 or 5 times throughout a game if it isnt working. Its so simple and will at least confuse the defence on who they are supposed to be marking. We are so bloody static and predictable to defend against. Its easy this management lark

He has played CF quite a bit but sometimes he's just not what we are needing to lead the front especially versus Kompany types I think he's a good false 9 or CF. I expect him to be CF more in cup matches than the league like last season.
