I haven't been into Hanley for years, its an horrid shit hole of a place both in the day and at night. It's lifeless, dirty, dull and full of really fat ugly people, mainly with a can of beer in their hand. I went into Wilmslow this morning with the family, nice breakfast, few drinks and stopped for a meal on the way back. Once a month we go to either Birmingham or Manchester but this Saturday we're going to London £37 return with Virgin, its a no brainier. Under no circumstances will I visit Hanley. If the people of Hanley had the same life choices of those in Wilmslow then I'm sure they'd be more than 'fat' and 'ugly'. Care to show your portrait? I'm very pleasing on the eye.

I love Manchester, much prefer it to Liverpool which I just can't take to. I live in Manchester but went to Liverpool last weekend. I think with Liverpool it's definitely a case of knowing the places to go. Went to some right shit holes and some decent boozers/bars. Will do my research next time. Work in Manchester now but spent the last 3 years in Liverpool and I can tell you there is only one answer to which is the better city! You're right though, you definitely need to know where you're going.

Also bedn told to avoid matthew street. Is this correct? Manchester , is Spread out into about 4 areas to drink. I hear Deansgate lock for young , Northern quarter for mixture of ages. I may take Wendy for a night out up one of those cities

As a few have a alluded to the issue is the 6 towns. The fact is the council spent decades trying to spend money evenly between each of the 6 town centres and councillors for those areas used to try and block spending on other town centres unless they had some spent on theirs. This stupid loop meant Hanley has never really been given the proper money to develop into a city centre. Its something which I cant see being remedied any time soon if ever because people will always try and make a case for spending money on Longton, Burslem etc.

There's a lot of doom and gloom in this thread from people that "haven't been to Hanley for years and it's shit."
I think the area is getting a lot better with the improvements that have been done and the stuff in the pipeline. It's turning into the alright centre of a weird, small city that's too close to bigger cities (luring the bright to work and spend there) to ever be a metropolis. It's alright for what it is though and it's getting better, you miserable bastards.

Matthews street is definitely one to avoid,it's a shit hole full of shit bar's with touts hanging round trying to get you into places by offering free shots, bit like a shit Magaluf We found some other decent bars and one really smart one at the top of the Liverpool one shopping area. We didn't enjoy the night as much as Manchester but in the day the city is spot on, we stayed near the Albert Docks and it's spot on around there and the shopping centre is really good as well.

We went to Liverpool last year and must have really got it wrong as it didn't impress me much, ended up in Albert Dock in the day and main shopping area at night, again not overly impressed.
In this day and age nowhere is to far, for example we're going to Dublin in a few weeks £9.99 for the flights and looking to back to Berlin shortly, flights were £49.
Couple of hours and you can be literally be anywhere in Europe it really is that easy, well not if you're at Dover now.

However, I would recommend the Cavern Club on a week night. Great atmosphere and not too busy. As the town centre is pretty close together, all the top places are on a number of streets all parallel or close by to each other: Hope St, Hardman St, Bold St, Seel St. Loads of places dotted around. I like Northern Quarter, especially Castle Hotel which is a super little pub with a top jukebox.

I'm on the sauce pretty much every weekend, and in this calendar year I've been to Manchester on the piddle more times than I've been to Hanley, it's that shit now I'd rather pay for a hotel somewhere and stay over or get the train, plus when I go on the sauce around Manchester or Liverpool etc. the premises are nicer, they aren't full of dickheads who just want a fight, everyone is just chilled out and enjoying themselves, whereas round here you're constantly waiting for the next bit of bother.
When I do go out locally I tend to go out up 'Castle, even that's not amazing but it's in a different league compared to the festering carcass that is Hanley.
I'm not kicking the place when it's down either, with some actual proper investment from people who know what they're doing it could improve massively, but that won't happen when they're filling it with shit like a giant £50 million stained glass abortion that is 70% unused.
There also needs to be a purge on the smackheads, even in the day they infest the place, not nice for the older folks and little kiddies.

You're right though, you definitely need to know where you're going. Once you find your feet with Liverpool it's definitely top notch. Need to get used to it and know your way around, like any big city. The amount of people that must miss the Northern Quarter in Manchester for the sake of making a right turn is probably similar. Both great cities for food, drink and entertainment.
