Well the bookies have us a fourth favourite to win the actual competition, so they obviously think we're in with a shout of the semis. We won't get that far. Where do you think we'll finish in our group Joe?

Where do you think we'll finish in our group Joe? Probably top it Paul and then depending on the draw we will meet somebody with a bit of nouce up top and out we go ...so last 16 or SFs That defence and Roy returning to type frightens the life out of me but fingers cross he goes with the new brigade

Where do you think we'll finish in our group Joe? I think we'll win the group. Problem is our players lack the mentality to handle the varyingdemands of international knockout football.

be honest now - does anyone REALLY expect anything from our team ? I dont hence - no flags - no expectation - no excitement and I hope I'm wrong --absolutely Don't say that, JoeinOz will say you're trying to look fashionable by rubbishing England's chances at the Euro's...... even though it's by far the most rational standpoint to take.

Since the ridiculously high expectation level of Germany 2006 we have steadily lowered expectations to the point of abject pessimism, well I for one will have my flags out by Friday when it all kicks off and I'm surprisingly upbeat about our chances, I think it's plain to see our defence is suspect so if woy goes for goals I can see an exciting time ahead, going forward we'll always be in with a shout of 1 or 2 goals so let's just go for it, everyone panned England for the Portugal performance but if you look around Germany, poland and Wales have also been poor which proves friendlies mean fuck all ,unless of course you beat Germany away after being 2 down Go all out attack and make it good to watch is the least I expect, realistically the 1/4 final should be possible after that who knows ! COME ON ENGLAND

Nobody is expecting England to take the Euros by storm. It's just been pointed out that we have a talented group of attacking players and so hopes are higher that we might have a decent tournament compared to the last three or four.
Does hoping for that really make you tubthumping, Vindaloo shouting, Ingerlund Neanderthal?

We'd have to almost try not to make it to the Quarter-Finals.
If we top the group (and it wouldn't exactly take a searing group performance todo that), we're likely to face a 3rd-place team making up the numbers in the last 16.
Q-F could potentially be very tough if it's Belgium (less so if it's Italy)

It would be an astonishing stunt to miss out of the QF's, in fact I don't think it can be done.

of St George, you know those little plastic ones that usually flutter from the windows of Renaults, Fiats and Seats before every International tournament? I haven't seen any, are we not as patriotic as once was Not seen a single one round Leeds yet, but last World Cup was the same - it didn't really pick up here until a day or two before England's first match, so expecting same Friday / Saturday, especially if the weather stays as good as it has been.

There isn't the excitement in England that there is in other countries. We've seen failure so many times.
As for the racist element, well when the main use of St George flags are at EDL/far right rallies it probably doesn't help.

Completely confused why they'd be seen as offensive? It's the flag of this country? What's the issue?

I will be putting my England flag out on Friday, even though up until the last few weeks I had lost most of my interest in the national team(mainly due to the bumbling relic we have as manager)but as the tournament gets closer I am getting more excited. Just a thought, but how about people posting pics of their England flags in all their glory? Oh,and the Missus bought me a retro Euro 96 England shirt this morning.Very nice.

The statement is easy to understand, you obviously do not fully comprehend English or you're a complete dipstick, making it a pointless exercise trying to explain to you Wow, this really has touched a nerve with some people!! Some people don't like the construction of their sentences being criticised do they!! My point is why say it was an Asian taxi driver. Why not say that it was a taxi driver. You're just using an extra word for no reason. From now on then we have to mention everyone by using extra words. "What is Welshman Hughes thinking of bringing him on", "Did you watch that programme last night with the homosexual Graham Norton on"...... What do people think of talking in this way? I can't speak for everyone else but personally, I think you’re just trying to be provocative, perhaps you should grow up and stop behaving like a dipshit.

I can't speak for everyone else but personally, I think you’re just trying to be provocative, perhaps you should grow up and stop behaving like a dipshit. Provocation is genuinely not my motive. I'm interested as to why that particular poster chose to mention another person's ethnicity. I personally didn't think that it was relevant. The poster could easily have left it out of their sentence and it would still have made perfect sense but they chose to mention it. For the third time, I'll ask why do this? If someone could please give a reasonable answer, or contribute constructively to the discussion, then this will be most welcome. Can't believe I'm responding to something so pathetic but at a guess, he mentioned 'Asian' because earlier in the thread somebody said that flying the English flag was somehow deemed 'racist' and that Asians and other minorities would take offence (which is a load of bollocks in itself). In a world where we are told that foreigners don't integrate or want to integrate into British society, the poster was pointing out that an Asian taxi driver was proudly flying an English flag. Don't know if that's how it was meant but that's how I read it.

Do you know anything about my perspective on the England team? OR English football in general? I was rolling my eyes when people talked of golden generation bollox. I wrote this in 2010. Are these the words of someone who thinks England are going win trophies? www.stoketshirts.co.uk/wordpress/?p=510When it comes to England my feet are well and truly on the ground. Being able to enjoy a tournament is a love of football. Wanting the national team to do well isn't patriotic it's supporting a football team. Same as I didn't stop supporting Stoke after watching stokies slipping down the grassy knoll at Wigan.

We don't know for certain, but it's a fair assumption. So why shouldn't they fly the flag of their country. As I've mentioned previously, stating the person's ethnicity is irrelevant and adds nothing to the sentence. So why mention it? He's answered your question.

Has anyone ever complained about the flags?? Is there any record of a complaint?? No but the oatcake is definitely the place to come to hear some overstated political correctness. The truth of the matter was they were cheap tat and the novelty ran out! I used to find them so cringeworthy and I was only in primary school.

For the love of god give it a rest eh pal, everyone else can see what was meant apart from you! Okay, as a non Brit born national I found it a positive addition to the sentence. As alluded to before, the OP was talking about the lack of flag waving and chest thumping excitement happening around the streets of England compared to previous tournament build ups (i only noticed some flags yesterday on a single car compared to the EM 2012 and WM 2014 competitions - this was only noticeable by the absence of others). The reason why the ethnicity is utilised is to prove the point that there seems to be such a malaise about this tournament that even the stereotypical England fanatic is being shown up by those whose origins may not at first be viewed as originally British. Furthermore, that they have integrated far better than believed that they are more supportive of the national team and said kudos were given to that individual. You can also remove yourself from the 3rd or 4th generation consideration as research shows that whilst the 1st or 2nd generation "support England" the 3rd and 4th generation in the majority seek out their origins and support said nation.... yet still see themselves also as British. It is unusual for Sub Continent Indian/Pakistani 3rd/4th generation, especially in non-mixed families to be so open about their support for England, if indeed that is what is was.... he may have just been playing to the customer Now your question has been has been answered. May I ask you why there is an accusative tone in your wording that can be perceived as racism baiting that belies your Username? As a non Brit I read exactly what the intent of the OP's thread was and it was far and away from what you are alluding to, despite your protestations of innocence so why would this be so?

As a non Brit I read exactly what the intent of the OP's thread was and it was far and away from what you are alluding to, despite your protestations of innocence so why would this be so? Thank you for your well considered and constructive response. This is easily the best I've received by far. May I pull you up on a couple of points, however. I wasn't referring to the original poster. Indeed, my point was directed at a post made by "werrington" about 3 or 4 posts down on the first page. Secondly, you are the first person to mention the "R" word. At no point have I accused or suggested the poster of being discriminatory or offensive. I merely wondered as to why this poster chose to include the person's ethnicity. I've read the thread and posts again & I still feel that it isn't relevant to the point being made. It was certainly not my intention to come across as in an accusative tone. Apologies for this. Whilst I accept your considered response, unfortunately there are a few points that you have been ill-conceived in making. Whilst I admittedly and mistakenly typed OP, it could easily be construed about which post I was referring to as you referred to the correct item. Pedantically incorrect, however the thesis is extant from my point of view. I am the first person person to use the Racism word, not the "R" word, so please do not revert to playground annotations in a faux posturing that we cannot use certain words for fear of offence. I used Racism because that is exactly the connotation you were accusing Werrington of doing in your original response that has now disappeared from the thread. Without trying to sound patronising, you do not have to say the words "you are being racist" to allude to the effect that that is what you accusing Werrington of being, simply by the context of the words you did use, which is a shame. I consider all points of view valid, although i may not agree with all points of view I also understand that you feel the inclusion was not necessary and that is okay. I felt otherwise as described above and a couple of us gave reasoned opinions why we felt so.... Now we can move on! By the way... I think England will do far better than people expect.... As long as it is not to the disadvantage of Germany (although I genuinely think you guys are contenders!)
