The decade started quite promisingly musically speaking, even in the 'mainstream'. The survivors of Punk and New Wave bruising the upper echelons of the Pop charts. The Police, The Pretenders, The Specials, Madness and The Jam flogging loads. It was the decade John Lennon died, and Shakin' Stevens set about killing rock 'n' roll. The music buying public had a brief love affair with fey New Romantic boys. Soft Cell, Human League, Depeche Mode, Spandau Ballet etc. The Australians {Kylie & Jase} aided and abetted by the tiresome Hit Factory, and Madonna filled the pop void left by Abba. The decade ended with pop pap, charity singles, re-releases and a top spot carve up between Jive Bunny and Right Said Fred.
Thank heaven there was/is always good music about. Most of it hardly grazing the charts. It was the decade of the rise of the 'Independant' record labels. The music rags printed an 'Alternative Top 30' along with the John Peel Show, they were the 'map and compass' for discovering stuff in the thriving musical underground. Great bands that still sound vital. Joy Division, Killing Joke etc
I think it was the decade that the youth worked through the violent Tribalism in music, prevalent since the Mods & Rockers. At the beginning of the Eighties in S-o-T there were Punks, Rude Boys, Skinheads, Mods, Goths, Ted/Psychobilly, Wrekkers, Heavies, Soul Boys and Casuals scrapping across the City in Town Halls and Youth Clubs. By the end of the decade they were all too busy grooving to fayt over music.

One of my favourite bands Totally. If you pitch them against any band, track for track, lyric for lyric and musician for musician. they hold their own and more in all quaters. Too many great tracks written by them to post on an 80's thread.

R.E.M whatever happened to them? Er, they went from strength to strength, made shedloads and decided to call it a day. My personal favourite album was New Adventures but they set the bar ridiculously high.

The sound of a Audi Quattro pelting past when one was taking a steady stroll..... Between you and me Harry, I don't think the rest of the numpties that have posted have grasped the true meaning of this thread.
