More utter nonsense from Her Majesty's press.
He's worth the obvious risk apparently and "oozes class"

All the droning on about Rooney covered up the big issue which is the defence. We weren't put under intense pressure yet conceded two goals. Holland didn't play that well really.
Up front there some good passing and moving and we looked decent at times. Defence is what needs to be addressed.

I was there, good goal but he like the rest of them didn't play well. Afellay was steady as he is. Their striker impressed me. Harried our defence all night and was as strong as an ox. Only 21 and been playing at a decent level for only a year. Very impressive debut. We were dreadful and couldn't string more than 3/4 passes together generally, they were worse. Great experience though.

But let's not go ott about last night, he like the rest were indeed shit.

More utter nonsense from Her Majesty's press. He's worth the obvious risk apparently and "oozes class" He "oozes class" at the things that are completely irrelevant to defending though. One passage of play last night where he brought the ball forward, into a midfield position and played a neat ball into the centre forward. Basically carrying out the role of a midfielder. If he can do both then great, but you can't offset the defensive frailties by bringing into the debate qualities which are meaningless for a centre half. We don't need centre halves that are good at bringing the ball out of defence. We need defenders that can win headers, tackles and generally get the better of any attacker from the opposition team. Anything else is a bonus. The "anything else" shouldn't be the predominant thing we look for though. It's a ridiculous argument to suggest "yeah, he may cost us a goal or two with his defensive frailties and general lack of nous, but boy can he bring the ball out of defence well." Whenever I read praise of him it's almost never do with defensive attributes. He's a bleeding centre half!

The only plus from last night was me rescuing what could have been the worst hot chocolate I've ever had. A triumph for good stirring over a shit kiosk server.

Thought Afellay was one of their best players on the night, and he also showed he still has got very decent pace! Good game lad!

£30M+ for Stones!!!! Give me a break! £10M would probably be closer to his real value! Madness!

Christ Pugsy how the fuck can you compare Stones and Booby Moore in the same breath. Bobby Moore captained a World Cup winning team. The only cup Stones will ever pick up is the one from his saucer.

In a lifetime of watching football, Moore is still the best defender I have ever seen.

Like I said, I WASN'T COMPARING. The last time we won anything we had ball playing centre half yet "we don't need one". I'm not saying Stones is the answer, far from it, he's a shed load to learn BUT he's the type of player we should be encouraging.

There's nothing wrong with ball playing centre halves. In the modern game, a central defender does have to be good with the ball at his feet (as do goalkeepers), but this clown is trying to do Cruyff turns in his own six yard box!
He was responsible for one goal last night, almost responsible for another one and nearly injured himself stretching for a ball after he'd over-run it.
