So you have this dynamic where you have an underperforming half a squad on crazy wages meaning the rest of the squad had to be bargain basement. You can call them bad managers - Sherwood especially - but I'm not sure anyone could bring success in this situation. Can you call Sherwood a bad manager? He comfortably saved them from relegation last year against all odds and took them to the cup final. This season was bad but if anything it's got worse since he left. I don't get the negativity on here towards Sherwood, he did a good job at Spurs and he did an amazing job at Villa last year. Is two months of poor results enough to disregard all that?

Would not be a surprise to see them fighting relegation in the championship next season. Real shame, always liked Villa.

Also, this is slightly off topic but with all the talk about expectations and whatnot, let's consider that to have meaningful memories of football you have to be 8 or 9 years old (by meaningful memories I mean some sort of true understanding of league positions and where you club fits into all that) then for someone to have a meaningful memories of our last spell in league 1 they would have to be at least 22 now. I think that kind of illustrates that the longer we stay at the top the higher expectations are going to rise. None of our teenage supporters have any idea of the heartache of those failed playoff campaigns and another year of fixtures against the likes of Wycombe, Northampton, Cambridge, etc. (no disrespect to those clubs but if Stoke City are in a league with them then we have fallen from grace)

Im sure we all appreciate how well our club is being run and the big picture , even though as all fans do we have a moan after a bad game thats just football and part of it . We seem to be a very stable club with a sensible plan and long may it be like that

Amazing to look at Villa's demise, it was quite sudden. Three 6th place finishes, followed by 9th, 16th, 15th, 15th, 17th and inevitably are now rock bottom. I used to always think of them as the 'best of the rest' and never thought we would not just compete with them, but overtake them.

But you know, maybe I'm just being fooled by the solid facts available to me and am not letting the blokes potentially abrasive personality lead me to the obvious, common sense conclusion that the man is a clearly a fraud and those facts don't exist. Oh to be smart like you.

He ended the season in 17th, winning 16pts from the 13 games to the end of the season. Not brilliant but he definitely kept them up. His results this season though were dire, he was sacked having won just 4pts from the first 10 games. Not sure about him as a manager, he did ok at Spurs but had a good squad to work with.

I feel sorry for Gard I don't think anyone could have rescued them not even a Pulis or Alladyce such was the mess they were in.
The person most responsible was the guy who spent 52.5m on 12 new players in the summer and no doubt will distance himself from the debacle. I get that that they lost but the signings he made were on the whole a disaster.
Ins Outs
Micah Richards Free Yacouba Sylla £1,000,000 Scott Sinclair £2,500,000 Matthew Lowton £1,000,000 Mark Bunn Unattached Andreas Weimann £2,750,000 Idrissa Gueye £9,000,000 Darren Bent Free Jordan Amavi £9,000,000 Enda Stevens Free Jordan Ayew £8,500,000 Graham Burke Released José Ángel Crespo £500,000 Chris Herd Released Rudy Gestede £7,000,000 Shay Given Free Jordan Veretout £7,000,000 Fabian Delph £8,000,000 Adama Traoré £7,000,000 Christian Benteke £32,500,000 Joleon Lescott £2,000,000 Aleksandar Tonev Free Matija Sarkic Undisclosed
Of the players above I think maybe only 2 played from the start today. I understand they'd miss Delph and Benteke. But the players he signed to replace them were laughable.

Living and working in Birmingham, I couldn't enjoy their current situation any more - well that is until they are mathematically relegated, which will be incredibly sweet! I've had years of Villa 'fans' saying how magnificent their club is and mocking so-called 'little clubs' like Stoke. Their arrogance in the City knows no ends and there won't be much sympathy from myself, the Blues fans or anyone else non-villa.
What makes it even sweeter is that many Villa fans cite ourselves as being the start of their downfall. When they were 2-nil up against ourselves in our 1st season back then they were technically 3 points clear of Arsenal in the Champions League spots. Up pops Ryan and Glen, an unbelievable mental, and Villa were pulled back to 2-2, missed out on the Top 4 that season and have been in decline ever since.
Happy days!!!

Villa under MoN had one of the highest wage bills in the Prem but failed time and again to get into the Champions league (which would have made the numbers add up). When Lerner said enough is enough and that the wage bill had to be appropriate to their success on the field they could only sell the sellable - the players everyone wanted because they were very good - but got left with those that no-one wanted (especially as they were on enormous wages). Think Agbonlahor. So you have this dynamic where you have an underperforming half a squad on crazy wages meaning the rest of the squad had to be bargain basement. You can call them bad managers - Sherwood especially - but I'm not sure anyone could bring success in this situation. It's sad to see, but Villa possibly need relegation to clear the house and shake off the dead wood. U are right, but I think that Lambert were a good decision for them att, and made some good decisions too. Shame he was sacked

This has been coming for 5 years really. The rot began when MO'N was told there was no money for new players and he promptly resigned, steady decline turned rapid last season.

You don't have to be smart. Just not stupid.

John Coates may decide he wants to take over when the time comes he has the experience of working with his Father and a passion for Stoke I met john Coates when I recently came to The Brit to watch a couple of games and can confirm that his passion for Stoke City is immense so if he decides to take over one day we'd be in extremely good hands

Aston villa. One of the longest serving top flight English clubs. Trophy room full of silverware. The majority of their fans are decent and not arrogant. A super old school club. One bad owner and in a puff of smoke it's all over....... As Stoke fans we aspire for Europe but i fear we may get too upset if we don't get there, aspire to win a cup but I fear we get too downhearted if we fall slightly short. We are in one of the biggest leagues in world football, continually suprising even ourselves with some fantastic displays and results. Once pc and family go which they eventually will then I hope and pray we continue to be sensible and progressive club with level headed support (in the main) without too much delusion of grandeur. If it can happen to Villa, as leeds forest Sheffield Wednesday and united before them then it can certainly happen to us. Enjoy the ride whilst we are at the top of the drop looking down Villa the season really reminds me of our holocaust season. We won 3 all season and Villa are so similar.

I've taken a lesson from this for sure. I'm new to the club, following just when pulls brought the team to the premier. I've never seen the bad days, and in the past years have only seen improvement. I'm optimistic about our future, but it's sinking in this year how successful teams in the pl are just for staying up.

1. Don't let Martin O'Neill near a large sum of money This can be said about many managers, it was said of Mark Hughes as well, luckily out chairman thinks differently otherwise we would never see the likes of Shaqiri and Imbula in the red and white stripes. O'Neil was a decent manager many years ago, I doubt he will get another premier league job any time soon but he alone is not to blame for the mess at Villa Park. You can't keep selling your best players every season without replacing them. Villa are going down and it may be some time before they are back.

I used to always think of them as the 'best of the rest' and never thought we would not just compete with them, but overtake them. I agree. When we got promoted to the Premier League I always regarded Villa and Everton as the two clubs we should aim for. Although I expected they would always finish above us, I felt that, if we could finish close to them in the table, we would be punching above our weight. Odd to think that we finish just above or below Everton regularly these days and it is a few years since Villa have finished close to us let alone above us. As other posters have said, there is a lesson to be learned here. Unless you have mega money behind you, life in the Premier League should never be taken for granted. In truth we can probably count ourselves lucky that we haven't yet become a yo yo club like West Brom or Norwich. And let's not forget those clubs who got relegated from the Prem in recent years, who have not only struggled to get back but have struggled to stay in the Championship. Coventry, Wolves, Charlton and the Sheffield clubs (and a few others) are an object lesson to us all. Thankfully, fingers crossed, our owners and management seem to be getting more right than they do wrong these days.

Does he really expect people to believe that utter bollocks that a picture of his car popped up onto his twitter status whilst in his pocket, presumably using a smart phone which wont press any buttons unless it has actual bare skin touching it? The guy's an absolute clown who deserves all the criticism he gets.

It really does take a good few years mismanagement at all levels for a club like Villa to get into that sort of mess and if they don't bounce back at the 1st or 2nd time of asking it could be a long, long way back.
