My late Grandad, bless him, started watching Stoke in about 19 nought spit, as he used to say He saw many of the great pre and post war players. Never one to go over the top in his admiration for Stoke players, he made an exception for Jimmy Mac. He maintained, quite simply, that Jimmy was one of the finest players he'd ever seen, not just for Stoke. The only other players I ever heard him give high praise to were Stan and Neil Franklin.

Vernon used to be called twinkle toes if my memory serves me correct. Great player in his day. Saw him quite a few times. I think I saw a Roy Vernon airshot where he completely missed the ball on the corner of the 6 yard box toward the Boothen, ended up sitting on his backside and couldn't blame anyone. Great view from the front of the paddock, no idea who it was against - doesn't seem to be on Youtube.

Anyone remember Roy Vernon, signed from Everton,a very good player, can't remember if he played with Violet or came later. Indeed I can remember Roy Vernon , he was reputed to be the only man who could smoke a fag in the shower without getting it wet, I'm pretty sure he would have played with Viollet in the 1963/64 season, however as I recall Roy was not one of Waddo's most astute signings. He was famous for his smoking. He used to flick his fag into the paddock as he ran onto the pitch. Never seemed to affect his play.

Went on to score 22 in 84 at Stoke. Died from cancer at the age of 56 (no surprise).

Denis Viollet ex Utd. Saw him a few times as well. Lawrie Leslie in goal. Good keeper too. Stood on the old Stoke end when I first went. Always a few blokes stinking of ale. Happy days for me though. Denis Viollet was one of my all time favourite players, but when he first arrived it took him a while to settle and did not have a good start to his Stoke career,it was during this time that we played Ipswich away in a F.A.cup match which ended in a 1-1 draw.In those days the players often caught the same train as the fans and this was one of those occasions, standing on the platform at Ipswich station a couple of my mates wearing their Stoke colours, were approached by Denis who said "We'll beat these in the replay lads", to which my mate Stan replied,"Not if you're f#####g playing we won't". A true great was Denis for us!

What a lot of 'prompts' on this thread! I'll restrict myself to one. At the time Jimmy was being targeted for transfer I was insisting to a school-friend that he'd be a great signing. My friend maintained he was 'over the hill' and we'd do better buying a journeyman striker called Frank Wignall, who, he claimed, would be a better buy. One of the few times I got something right!.

Both Dennis Viollet and Jimmy McIlroy were class.
If my memory serves me right, Dennis dropped back to wing half with the arrival of 25-year-old Peter Dobing from Man City, a club record signing at GBP 37,500.

Yes Dennis was fabulous. One of the best penalty takers I've ever seen.
