Wasn't Alex Elder the fullback that early in the game would knock his winger onto the cinder track then shake his hand?
Seem to remember he was brought from burnley .
It makes you nostalgic for games to be physical and without the playacting.

Best thread on this forum for ages. I didn't get into it until 67/68 but I remember Alex Elder's thighs and I heard many stories of Violet, McIlroy's etc from my elders! From my memory Bill Bentley always seemed quite a classy player and Maurice Setters looked like a coalman who had just come off a shift! I only saw him a couple of times but I remember that included one hell of a crunching tackle that make the whole stand wince! Always good to hear memories of these games. Always a matter of opinion of course, but classy is not a word I would use to describe Bill Bentley, think more of a left footed version of Wilko, with a tremendously powerful shot. I saw him play at Longton park playing for his school St.Gregorys against Queensbury when he was about 13, he was as big then as he was as an adult, playing for Queensbury that day was none other than Denis Smith, their were about 1,000 schoolkids myself included round all 4 sides of the pitch.St.Greg's won 1-0 with Bill getting the goal with a 25 yard piledriver.

I clearly remember the whole of Burnley (town) were very annoyed with the then Chairman Bob Lord for selling Jimmy to us for a fee of £25K I also remember well standing on Etruria station waiting to go to Leeds when we found the game had been called off due to snow/ice. Happy days

Happy days Happy days indeed Owde. Another recollection of this season I have is travelling to watch a friendly match against Sheffield United at Brammall Lane, which in those days only had spectators on 3 sides ,as it was also used by Yorkshire cricket club.It was one of the few pitches playable and I don't think Stoke had played for about 10 weeks.Sheffield United were in the 1st division then,if my memory serves me right I think we drew 2-2.

Bill Bentley is still cleaning windows in the Dresden area. He wasn't the best of nogger players and he's not the best of window cleaners either. He doesn't get up the corners. I was there when we got Vale-type attendances. Then, who else but a genius like Waddo would bring back a 48 year old? Job done, and the majority of those fabulous players he signed were a delight to watch. Jimmy Mac being one of them. Great, great days, that (IMO) have never been equalled since. OS.

One memory I have of that season was away at Huddersfield who were one of the top sides at the time. Stoke kicked towards their own fans in the first half and at half-time we climbed over the barrier and went down to the other end - not one or two people the whole of the crowd. I can't remember if the Huddersfield fans went the other way to do a swap. Thousands in a line marching down the side of the pitch. Hope my memory isn't playing tricks !!!!! There was no trouble that I saw, fans weren't strictly segregated like later.

Jimmy Mac, Denis Viollet and Maurice Setters all played in my first ever game watching Stoke. Waddo just seemed to get something extra from players deemed "past it" just as he did with Peter Dobing and George Eastham Btw Jimmy Mac had a lad who played a bit too...even played for the Potters...now, what was his name...

That's what I thought happened - but then I thought we had won because I can remember us scoring 3. Just checked and it was actually 3 - 3 ! Memory plays tricks sometimes. btw I don't recall Dobing (my favourite player at the time ) being one of Waddo's "past their sell buy date" players, he was lightening fast, when he wanted to be. They were all classy though. Wee Jacky Mudie was no bigger than Shaq but was a great centre-forward who scored regularly with his head against giant centre-halves.

Went to the gigg lane game as well, remember we couldn't get a programme for love or money and when we got through the turnstiles there was about 100 yard walk to the back of the main stand..

I was right about Dennis Viollet coaching in Jacksonville, Florida According to Wkik, he had various coaching jobs in the US from 1974 until his death in 1999 at the relatively young age of 65 (yikes!). From 1980 to 1999 he coached three professional teams in Jacksonville as well as at Jacksonville University.
I just read the whole Wiki article. Viollet left quite a mark on football (soccer) in North Florida. The soccer training facility at Jacksonville University is named in his hono(u)r and the University of North Florida and Jacksonville University play every year for the Dennis Viollet Cup. Nice. He died from brain cancer in 1999. Too young.

I bet there are not many, if any, can remember seeing Jimmy Mac score in a 1-0 win at Stamford bridge direct from the corner at the shed end in our promotion season 62/63. Shows what an old git I am.. That win at SB virtually sealed promotion for us as well. Waddo signed Jimmy in early March after the big freeze left a massive fixture congestion because there'd been no games for over two months. Stoke were sitting fifth at that point after a start that had seen only 3 defeats in 24 games but too many drawn games meant we were not in contention for a promotion place. However the signing of Jimmy was an inspiration because he spurred us on to a ten game undefeated run that took us right to the top where we stayed.

I know I brought the subject up about Jimmy McIlroy, but as I said earlier, Lawrie Leslie was a very good keeper and not very tall if my memory serves me well. Can you let me know if I'm right lads?

As I recall, Lawrie Leslie was a very good shot stopper from shots within short range, but he was worryingly suspect from shots from distance. There was a suggestion that he had a problem with his distance vision, however I don't know if there was any proof of this. You are right in recalling that he was short for a goalie.

Really nice bloke Alex Elder Think he had a bad injury not too long after joining us. If I remember right there was a crowd of about 60,000 for that Chelsea game - in the second division!

Great to see Jimmy Greaves in a Stoke shirt, though it doesn't look like the shorts fit him very well

I remember Bill Bentley. Ended up, at Blackpool didn't he? Saw him play anyway. Got link to both but saw neither play football. Bill Bentley was my Nan's lodger at one time and my Grandad worked for Oliver Rix as a mechanic never mentioned that Alex Elder bloke though.

McIlroy was 28 when he was the star man of the Burnley team which won the 1959/60 top flight title.....Burnley were NEVER top until AFTER the final match of the season ... a 2-1 win at Man City seeing them pip Wolves by one point.
Two seasons later 1961/62, inspired by McIlroy, Burnley had an even better team scoring more than 100 league goal.....at Easter they had a six-point lead with just six games remaining (two points for a win then) but a combination of injuries and FA Cup replays saw them blow the lead and they only got 3 points from 6 games and allowed Alf Ramsey's Ipswich to take the title.
Runners-up in the league, Burnley then lost the FA Cup final 3-1 against Spurs.

Anyone remember Roy Vernon, signed from Everton,a very good player, can't remember if he played with Violet or came later. Indeed I can remember Roy Vernon , he was reputed to be the only man who could smoke a fag in the shower without getting it wet, I'm pretty sure he would have played with Viollet in the 1963/64 season, however as I recall Roy was not one of Waddo's most astute signings.
