Just watched the end of a sky programme on the Burnley side of the sixties including Jimmy and Alex Elder. Caught the last 15 mins. Jimmy was saying one of the hardest players he played against was Maurice Setters. Reminded me of a game I saw at the Vic, where it was particularly muddy. You could not tell what colour Setters shirt or for that matter kit was when he came off the pitch at the end. Little get of a player he was! He must have been a nightmare to play against!

I bet there are not many, if any, can remember seeing Jimmy Mac score in a 1-0 win at Stamford bridge direct from the corner at the shed end in our promotion season 62/63.
Shows what an old git I am..

Watched Alex Elder play left FB. His favourite ball was a long, high ball down the wing!

Alex didn't seem to enjoy his stay at Stoke. That was the impression I got from something he said. Can't remember what. It's an age thing!

What a player Jimmy Mac was for Stoke! We got him when he was past his prime but he was still magic. Happy days.

He was in the mould of a lot of Waddington's signings at that time "useful but past his best". I remember he had huge thighs, (a bigger version of Shaqiri!) but wasn't very quick. I guess he wasn't too happy, because he was replaced by Bill Bentley and then Pejic. Bill Bentley, now there was a guy who could kick a football; you didn't want to be in the way of one of his free kicks.

Alex Elder was one of the worst alleged footballers we have ever signed in our history

I believe Alex Elder worked for the Oliver Rix garage change after retirement. Anyone buy an Austin Allegro off him!?

I remember all these names on this thread. Definitely confirms me as an old git! Does anyone remember Dennis Violet of that era? I think he ended up managing a team in Jacksonville, Florida in the 80s. But I could have dreamt it (I do a lot of that!).

I remember Bill Bentley. Ended up, at Blackpool didn't he? Saw him play anyway. Sure did..and then was a window cleaner... played in the same stoke schoolboys side as Jackie Marsh. Bill was a big youth at school and played centre half for the schoolboys. Some good players in that side.... won the ESFa trophy in 1962 & 63 . Stoke on Trent haven't won it since...

Before my time, but I know he was one of the legends back then and has a road by the Brit named after him. I think you are right about the Florida connection also, couldn't tell you which team though sorry.

Denis Viollet ex Utd. Saw him a few times as well. Lawrie Leslie in goal. Good keeper too. Stood on the old Stoke end when I first went. Always a few blokes stinking of ale. Happy days for me though.

Difficult to get past but once you had you were in the clear !!! Good in his time but well past it at Stoke. Jimmy Mc on the other hand may not have been at his peak but was a great player for us.

I was in London for an interview to join the Merchant Navy, and then realised I Would be missing Stoke home games.

Shows what an old git I am.. / Another old git here who was at the game. I was 15 and it was the first time that I was allowed to go up to London from Devizes on my own. I was standing at the other end of the ground and couldn't see much of our goal as I was too far away - in those days the Chelsea ground was also a dog racing track so there was a semi circle track behind both goals. I've still got the game programme which cost 6 old pennies. From the programme out team was O'Neil , Asprey , Allen , Clamp , Stuart , Skeels , Matthews , Viollet , Mudie , McIlroy and Ratcliffe. Looking at the programme again I was intrigued to note that it didn't contain any adverts. The attendance for the then second division game was just over 66,000. The 62/63 season was notable for the big freeze early in 1963. Have a look at www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2256206/FA-Cup-hit-Big-Freeze-1963--How-competition-decimated.html which contains a photo of the Chelsea ground with the totaliser ( I think that it was called that ) near where I stood. In the 62/63 season Stoke didn't play any games in January or February because of the snow and freezing conditions. I was at a school which played rugby before Christmas and football after Christmas and we didn't play any football at all. Still, it gave me time to revise for my O'level exams that I was sitting that summer.

I think that this may have been the game when "Chopper Harris" tried to rough up Sir Stan, but gave up after Clampy poliaxed the so called hard man ?

Denis Viollet was one of my all time favourite players, but when he first arrived it took him a while to settle and did not have a good start to his Stoke career,it was during this time that we played Ipswich away in a F.A.cup match which ended in a 1-1 draw.In those days the players often caught the same train as the fans and this was one of those occasions, standing on the platform at Ipswich station a couple of my mates wearing their Stoke colours, were approached by Denis who said "We'll beat these in the replay lads", to which my mate Stan replied,"Not if you're f#####g playing we won't".

I think that this may have been the game when "Chopper Harris" tried to rough up Sir Stan, but gave up after Clampy poliaxed the so called hard man ? It was Chelsea, Sunderland and us neck and neck. The turning point was Easter when we played Sunderland twice in 3 days and took 3 points from them. Nerve-wracking but what a feeling when we matched them and then beat them. We then beat Chelsea near the end of the season to put ourselves on top. Some of those games drew crowds of 60+ thousand. What a season.

We did an article about the 62/63 season in the fanzine last season. I'll try and get it online.
We lost 6-0 at Norwich in Jimmy McIlroy's debut!

Shows what an old git I am.. I was there, my abiding memory being Stan and Jimmy Mac running down the clock by passing the ball to each other in the left corner of the pitch, I think they won about 5 corners and a couple of free kicks as Chelsea just couldn't get the ball off them.

Best thread on this forum for ages. I didn't get into it until 67/68 but I remember Alex Elder's thighs and I heard many stories of Violet, McIlroy's etc from my elders!
From my memory Bill Bentley always seemed quite a classy player and Maurice Setters looked like a coalman who had just come off a shift! I only saw him a couple of times but I remember that included one hell of a crunching tackle that make the whole stand wince!
Always good to hear memories of these games.
