I see the usual rabid Whelan lovers are on-board sticking their fingers in their ears shouting 'La la la la' at the top of their voices - refusing to acknowledge the truth and just rolling out tired cliches in his defence (it would have been 6-0 blah, blah, blah - A new one too, it was Imbula's fault for being new & foreign!).
Glen Whelan has one job to perform, to 'protect' the back four. If he doesn't do that (He didn't on Sat, take off the blinkers & open your eyes), then what use is he? He only has the one job to perform because technically he is dogshit. He needs 7 touches to control the ball and lift his head up. He cannot play a quick pass or an incisive one, can't glide past players, cant burst forward, cannot shoot. All he can do is run after opposition players and try to disrupt their forward play. He is not even that good at tackling, and that usually only happens after his first touch. He was really really poor on Saturday, and not for the first time recently. He did not fulfil his defensive duties (eg left a gaping hole for the first) and gave possession away needlessly several times (eg passed it straight to them under no pressure to give them the possession which led to the corner for the 2nd).
All of the team were woeful on saturday with the one exception of Imbula, but GW took his ineptitude to new levels. The OP is correct. Thanks for everything Glen, but you need replacing asap.

Walking back to the car on Saturday (and getting piss wet through) whilst mulling over another Bad Day at Black Rock, I assumed that when I did finally get round to looking at the Oatcake there would be some diatribe slaughtering Whelan. I just opened the Oatcake and bingo! Here it is.
I really can't be bothered to read through all of this tripe all I'd ask is the following:-
Did Whelan give the penalty away?
Did Whelan leave Coleman unmarked?
Did Whelan play the suicidal misplaced pass?
Did Whelan blast the ball over the bar a la Ireland?
Did Whelan consistently fail to get his crosses past the first defender?
Is it Whelan's job to put the ball in the back of the net?
Is it Whelan's fault that our forwards can't hit a cow's arse with a banjo?
So Saturday's defeat was simply down to one player?
So if we replace Whelan all our troubles will be over, Champion's League here we come?

This will now be possibly the 15th time in 8 years that he's needed replacing ASAP . Yeah ?

We've moved on from the Whelans of the game now. He's starting to stick out like a sore thumb. He's been a great servant to the club but we're now evolving into a very good side and unfortunately our midfield seem to be a step ahead

He still plays a pivotal part in the team and there's currently no-one better as a holding midfielder at the club right now so he has to play for me.
That being said there was defintely a Whelan sized hole for their 1st goal, and there were too many occasions for my liking where he took it upon himself to be the one doing the closing down on Saturday. He needs to be the one sitting in front of the back 4 and breaking up the play, the forwards and the other central two midfielders playing ahead of him should be the ones closing down the opposition.

Imbula looked outstanding but absolutely wants to push forward all the time so we need Whelan to be gate keeper for the back four. I wouldn't drop him.
However, if you look at Spurs, playing Dier in the DM position who drops into the back line when the full backs progress is a really nice model, and it's possibly something we could use Cameron for.

He's no good at 'gate-keeping' though!!! 9 goals conceded in 3 league games!!! Its not all his fault but he surely is part of the problem???

He has been written off a few times on here and come back. But I agree he needs dropping as the last 4 games we would have been better playing with 10 men. Geoff and imbula next week please. Neither of them are DM's!

I thought it was a Wollschied sized hole for the first goal personally* - got sucked out wide so much that I think there were two players running through the gap between him and Muniesa. *Willing to be told I'm talking bollocks though as I only saw it at the match and not having bothered to watch any football since!

Premier, It was right in front of us, Block 18, GW came out to support Johnson, and Lennon's backheel was right onto the area that GW had vacated. It was Cleverly who ran into the space, not Lukaku, who for probably the only time, was being covered by Willy.

He had a poor game by his own high standards but in that respect he was not alone!
