Image wise - Dee Dee Ramone
Glad Flea was mentioned, great player.
Again, not technically a master but always liked Kris Novaselic's style.

Mark King legend. Seeing level 42 at the viccy hall this year.
Others include several mentioned already such as Geddy Lee, Entwistle,Newsted, Karn and Foxton.
However one must not forget the engine that is Derek Forbes formerly of Simple Minds, he was awesome in their early tenure. The empires and dance album was fantastic.
Also on the list; pino pallidino, jaco pastorius and les Claypool

A treat for Steve Harris (Iron Maiden)fans..
One for Geddy Lee (Rush) - Ive never been a big Rush fan but this guy is fucking awesome
Cliff Burton (sadly left us in 1986 RIP)of Metallica's absolute masterclass
And one for the Great man RIP - what a glorious noise; can hardly believe its even a bass!

This is actually a cover by Metallica
And this is the original
Let you decide which is best, but the bass is wicked on both!

Image wise - Dee Dee Ramone Glad Flea was mentioned, great player. Again, not technically a master but always liked Kris Novaselic's style. Others who have got there more with image; Gene Simmons (Kiss) and Nikki Sixx (Motley crue)
Dullest bass player must be Ian Hill from Judas Priest with Cliff Williams of ACDC not far behind. Both plod along without doing anything interesting.
Surprised (well then again not) that no shouts for Adam Clayton U2
Few others not so well known but great players Blacky from Voivod (Canadian prog thrash) Andrew Weiss from Henry Rollins Band DD Verni from Overkill

Book Of Souls is a brilliant album - best Ive ever heard them play in a while. Not a classic like Beast or the old Dianno era but I think as a whole its the best musicianship Ive heard from them. Bruce sounds great too despite his cancer scare.

No one gonna mention McCartney?! John Entwistle (Ox) Paul Simonon (The Clash) Peter Hook (New Order) Phil Lynott (Thin Lizzy) Bruce Foxton (The Jam) Andy Rourke (THe Smiths) Mani (Roses & Primal Scream) A likeable shit fan too. Aston Family Man Barrett (The Wailers) Robbie Shakespeare (Sly & Robbie) Jaco (Weather Report) It shouldn't have taken until the 16th post in this thread for Jaco to be mentioned! I reckon if you asked this question to every other player named in this thread, the majority would say Jaco Pastorius. He revolutionised the instrument.

No particular order, just great bass players:
Walter Becker Jack Bruce Rick Grech Andy Fraser
and Aston Barrett (sp) the bass player with Bob Marley. Fantastic hot night at the end of summer term in 76 at Leeds Uni with Barrett's bass driving the whole thing.

I have this thread to thank for introducing me to Les Claypool and his amazing bass craft - somehow the Primus thing completely passed me by in the early 90s - young family etc anyhow, me and the boy went to the Roundhouse to see Primus and the awesome and enigmatic Mr Claypool back in June - so thank you OP and the Claypool posters - I'm a convert (love the collaborations with Buckethead and Sean Lennon as well - what a talent).....here's one that shows some of that wizardry
